Thank you for posting! Another tidbit that could help would be to add how to hyperlink the TOC to the headings in the document. For those of you looking for that... I finally figured out that if you add " \h" to the end of the field code you'll hyperlink the TOC.
AWESOME! I'm writing my Masters Thesis and my Professor wants a TOC for each section. I wish I would have seen this sooner! I've been inserting a NEW TOC for each section, and then DELETING the fields I didn't want... LOL! Thank you for this!
This video is exceptional. I need to create a table of contents, followed by a table of table, then followed by a table of contents and spent hours thinking about what to do and trying to invent something. I came across your video and you gave a clear answer. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this video! I am writing a summary for my exam and this video was so helpful. I desperately tried to add a second TOC, now I know how it works. Very simple and clear explanation. Thanks a lot!
Wonderful clear explanation - thank heavens for skilled people like you who are willing to share your knowledge. I'd never have worked that one out intuitively! I too would be interested to know how to indicate multiple levels within the TOC, but am sure I'll eventually figure it out. Good on you for helping others like this.
Works great, fantastic thanks! My added tip would be to create two bookmarks in the document per section that you want to create a TOC for. One you can name e.g. "A_DescriptionOfSection" and the other simply "A". So when you want to link to the section, you just use the letter flag "A", "B", "D", whatever. But you do also have the descriptive version in the document too so that you can tell what "A" or "D" is. cheers! JB
Great tutorial, I tried reading and watching other tutorials and people are just so hopeless at writing this stuff in simple terms. This is great. Bookmark and name area needed > Add TOC from Quick Parts > Choose options in TOC quick part (style and bookmark name) done. Why do people have to write essays and show you these 2 hour lectures on the subject?
Excellent video, thank you. How does this function affect the presumed master table of contents for a larger document? Will it alter the cumulative table of contents?
Hi Chester, many thanks for this, I'm doing a project for work and this has been a great help. However from the TOC, there is no option that it lets you click on the section you want to go to. Is there anyway to do this, if you want multiple TOC's in the document?
Okay I did this because I needed to make my table of contents go under separate headings and it looks great but now my TOC is no longer clickable, meaning I can´t Control + click to arrive at a certain page in the document and I don´t know how to automatically update it as I continue to make changes to the document.
Hi Chester, when I follow this procedure text in my document says "Error! Bookmark not defined." Do you know what this is and how I can get around it? Thank you
Hi, is it possible to create multiple lists of figures and lists of tables in the same document? I have a document for which I applied your video and created 2 parts with 2 TOC. Now I need to create 2 different lists of tables and figures, how can I do it? What I have at present is that the numbers of tables and figures continue in the two parts. I want those of the second part to be different. Thanks
QUESTION: what if you have a large document with tables and figures interspersed throughout; yet there is a TOC for the headings, a separate TOC for figures and another one for tables? Each time I need to update the table of contents for the figures, Word also wants to replace the original TOC.
Dear Sir I have for example Chapter1 and Introduction) on the same page. when I generate a table of contents, they appear in the separate line. but I want to mix them in one line such as (Chapter 1: Introduction……………………………………………………….1) Please, could you help me to finde the solution? Best regards
hi its not working for me ive selected lines of text in the document which are on different pages but its not working. is it because the lines of text is on random pages and not in one paragraph/ page like your video shows?
Hi zir786. Word won't allow you to create a bookmark for non-consecutive content so this would be why you are having problems. You need to select the whole chapter/section that you want to create a TOC for and then create the bookmark - not just parts of it. Hope this helps.
***** thanks it did help. what i did instead was create a table of figures. currently my document only has one table. but when i add more, then this bookmark method wont work. so i will have to create another table of tables. but not sure how i would do that.
I think this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. ... wait wait... now there are big blocks at the start of each section. I wish I could upload a picture. What should be "1. Introduction" is now "[black rectangle] Introduction" Each subsection is numbered correctly, 1.2, 1.3, etc. WHAT?!
There seems to be a serious problem with this approach.😪😪😫 This does not work on headings which are made of custom styles 😥😥🙄. This only uses default "Heading1, Heading 2....". Is there a work around....😌

but not working for multiple TOC??
@@ziyadcomputerindra1136 Yep
Excellent - thank you for this comment. For anyone struggling with this the syntax is "TOC \b [name of your bookmarked section] \h"
Been looking so long for this solution, thank you so much!
Still works in 2022 in Word 16.67. Thanks for making this video!

Thank you so much for the tip! Is it possible to show only Heading 1 in this instance?
This was a lifesaver for me! Thank you!

THANK YOU for posting this.
How do you now get the table of contents to link to each of the headers please? Is there a different process? Thanks!
good stuff mate, thanks, id did solved my issue with a huge document
Thank you💜️
Great! But for some reason my table of contents does not have those (very useful) leader lines. Any idea why? Is there a way to reformat?
you just saved me a looooot of time on my thesis xD
Thank you so much
How can I control the TOC level? I want it to generate only 1 level of TOC based on the styles of H1.
you saved me. thank you kindly sir

+Chantelle Garber ---I just had to figure this out. If you add " \h" to the end of the field code it will hyperlink your TOC to the headings.
Thanks so much, worked perfectly!!!
@@elainejoslin5216 Thank you, that was really important!

Awesome! But I don't have the "\b" switch in the field options window (Word 2007)
+InfinityDz Nevermind, I figured it out (I'm using MSWord in French, and I was choosing "TC" instead of "Sommaire")
Thanks !

Great explanation. But I do wonder how anyone actually works this sort of stuff out for themselves if they rely solely on the Microsoft help pages.
Thanks.
Thank you
But the difference is... this option lost its link with the letter sections (no hyperlink), so you can't jump to the section by clicking on it

There is an empty paragraph right after the ToC. Is there a way to remove that?
Khalid, you might have an empty paragraph formatted with a TOC style. If you have, remove the TOC style from the paragraph and then recreate the TOC.
@@ChesterTugwell I think that empty paragraph is also in this video. Creating the main ToC doesn't have it. If you need a screenshot, do let me know.
"Add " tab is not selectable in my case????

WHAT?!
hello sir, how to do it in word 2011?
And how to change showing levels in such TOC?
Yes I would like an answer to this too. I only want to show level 1 in the TOC.
I don't think this works for Mac... no quick parts that I can see.
Thanks Tug
