1982 American Airlines Commercial - Long

- Here is a 1982 American Airlines commercial. I have two of these, and this is the longer of the two.
A Boeing 727-23 is featured though out this commercial, although a DC-10 is at the end.
I miss that foreign country where at least on TV we cared about it each other. This ad for American Airlines brought back that feeling if only for a moment. Thanks much to the ad agency that ran this campaign for AA. They did a great job! (& took me away from today's mess if only for a moment!)
*flashbacks to twa*
Agency: Doyle Dane Bernbach, New York ; Written By: Thomas Dawes ; Year: 1975.
This commercial is INCREDIBLY 80's.
This was back when women's hair was a solid mass of hairspray and men were born in their late 40s.
I was fortunate to have been selected to be in a couple of these commercials! It makes me smile to look back at the memories I have of American Airlines all those years ago! Thank you to whomever posted this commercial! That was a treat to see!
Thank you, Lynn, for commenting!
America needs to bring this ad campaign back! Love the jingle.
I can see that even American flight attendants were beautiful and polite back then. 😅😂😂😂😂
Op
Right you are 😂😂😂
And Americans were polite and manners were the priority NOT Gender crap
Maybe that's because they were paid for it. 😁
These commercial songs are sometimes better than the modern day commercials where the producers just take an existing song, and turn it into a spoof based on the commercial their producing; whereas, these retro commercials just make up their own cool jingles.
You might like this book Who Killed the Jingle? How a Unique American Art Form Disappeared . Just skim it and it will give you the reasons Jingles went away.
The United Airlines theme song is based on a 1924 Song called Rhapsody in Blue.
The days before 9/11...you can see how much things have changed.
That the fear of a hijacking has diminished? Service has gone down, but what people in economy want is low fares.
it was not 9/11 it was a lack of reinvestment in basic customer service in flight and otherwise to earn customer loyalty.
after 9/11, flying in Asia has changed only a little
I can REMEMBER how things have changed! The days when you could see someone off or greet their arrival right at the gate - those were the days. I remember when there was a smoking section on the plane, too. LONG time ago.
Things starting going down in the industry long before 9/11.
The song is perfect.
I liked their late 80s to early 90s tag line. As late as 1998 they were selling metro New York City as a six airport hub to do business in. Ancient now.
I love this version always have
YES I LIKE THE SONG OF THIS COMERCIAL👧👧👧👧❤❤❤
They used to be this before today lol.
Almost every flight has a delay today.
Pilot Mickey Howell (seen at 0:21) passed away in 2015.
They had a magnificent advertising department during the late 1970s. This was perhaps, the best version of their musical ads. So easy to sing along with and to remember!
Agreed. What we get now is just sad and forgettable.
right up there with twa
I just miss the service with a smile , I was a supervisor in the airlines myself n always made sure everyone got a smile!!!
Agreed. Its still there, but a rarity. A young FA came up to me on a flight and thanked me for being a rewards member, even though I was in coach. I was pleasantly surprised.
@@AviationCommercials Lucky you. I was visited by a flight attendant once a month due to her route n believe me she didnt want to give me just a smile it was much more than that lol but oh well Not bad for flying the friendly skies lol
I also remember when their jingle was "We're American Airlines, something special in the air".
Yes! That would be their next advertising campaign starting late 1984.
Dang straight!😊 I was a f/a with AA and it went like this..."High above it all, come let us take there, We're American Airlines, something special in the air!"🥰❤️
@@tracycolvin7789 And if you listen to this spot really close, you can hear the beginning of them transitioning to that replacement strapline; this campaign was much more upbeat than the earlier DWWDB spots.
New Livery Of American Airlines:
Has A Lot of Planes
Old Livery Of American Airlines:
Oldest Planes Still use it
They used to be so good
Now it's hell.
@@Cringehandleupdate dude don't say something like that.
@@steamlocosaregreat4428 AA isn’t hell. Most people who work there are honest good people and shouldn’t be ashamed of who they work for. But yes, AA as with most airlines used to be better.
@@Cringehandleupdate is not H4ll it’s just changed into multiple Yes/no opinions which are hostilely rude. I fly AMERICAN out of Dallas and thankfully they’ve treated us (surprisingly my whole family!) like queens, kings it’s so hard to believe. I’m flying first class this summer (6/25-🎁) and it’s from SHV-den round trip but with layovers. Can’t wait for this! AA employees need a lot of respect, it’s not their fault it’s the passengers unacceptable behavior. As a 14 year old, I really respect these ppl and anyone else, if you say “Its now 🔥” you might be making them sad, but I rlly praying for them. AMERICAN no matter what! Always an airline I go to! I don’t care about anything! I will be thankful. Stop complaining people and respect!
Such a catchy jingle! love it
More upbeat then now a days
Love the livery on them 727s and DC10s
i preferred the L1011 to the DC but 727 was good 👍
There's a reason I refer to American as the US's "flag carrier", even though we don't have one of those in the way that term's used in Europe...
@@charlesjwin their DC10s were so beautiful, I remember flying their md80s before they were retired (SUM ‘19) in first class and they were so nice it was such a rare opportunity:(
You gotta love those old 727s.
I'm not American, but watching this ad makes me nostalgic. There must be a reason why people around the world long for the 80s. It seems like the 80s is a particularly memorable era for humanity. People in the 20th century certainly had positive hopes for the next century. Now it makes me sad to know that we can no longer see such idealistic scenes captured in the ad.
Not me screaming in my head "WE'RE AMERICAN AIRLIIIIINES DOING WHAT WE DO BEST"
Not even born during this era but a feel a sense of nostalgia.
Sad to see those airline days end.
Few carriers serving most routes now gives no real incentive to compete.
jj martin Me too. I remember flying on a DC9 On a two hour domestic flight and we got served a full dinner!! I do miss that!!
American Airlines still exists
Pinkie pie Fan not really. It’s more like USAIR. They took over American after the bankruptcy and changed it so it was less like the old American and more like cut rate USAIR. Service is poor, meals have gotten so bad it’s disgusting. Maybe COVID 19 will make management come to its senses and bring back the “old” American Airlines!
Those days ended with deregulation
We’re American Airlines doing what we do best.
Now it's hell.
Beating passengers to death
@@velezdragon3574 that’s United
Perhaps the very best airline ad campaign ever, very memorable! Still miss the iconic look of American Airlines and the livery of their planes, so distinctive.
I miss these days. It’s so unfamiliar flying nowadays. Even on AA my favorite airline. I remember boarding American Flights and seeing “747 Luxury Liner” on the panel next to the door of the beautiful silver planes and everyone was so friendly. Why can’t things be like they were? 😢😢
We’ve been programmed to be a seemingly less caring country. Only we can change it though. I sure miss the 80’s I grew up in as a small child.
People degraded everywhere, not just in the US
You can thank deregulation, mostly, for the downhill ride to mediocrity. Passed by, wait for it, a Democrat (Carter)
Low fares after that, but also low service, legroom, smiles and now you get Spirit.
Hey!! That bagger guy is my father inlaw!!
woah thats cool, is he retired or does he still work for american?
@@fusion4373 He is retired but he has his own little side business going down in Texas. This was shot in Boston
@@markc5771 thats cool
Thats cool. I recognize a few of the other locals, but not Boston and that's my airport lol. Thanks for the comment.
My father started working for American airlines in 86 at O'Hare still works there. But not the same.
We're American Airlines doing what we do best from 1974 through 1993 era during Glory Days Raleigh-Durham hub Dallas-Fort Worth Hub and Miami hub
Jeffery Robertson my uncle was a ground crew chief at LAX and then at Raleigh Durham
vintagehaynesflute that's really amazing cool I still have American Airlines system timetable from the early 90s route map us Canada Caribbean Latin American Europe and Far East from 72s to jumbo jet DC-10
American Airlines at the Raleigh-Durham airport had closed the hub in a few years ago.
We're giving you our best. Exactly I think that still holds true today and it shows cause if it didn't they wouldn't be around today.
These were the good old days
I loved airline ads like this. So much, I thought that is what an airline flight would be like.
Back in the days of Flight Deck real smoking pleasure. Could lite up a whole carton on a TransCon
Miss those MD-80s. Had the privilege of flying a couple 11 years ago.
The MD-80s were nice, they came later than this commercial - in 1983. Seen in the video are a somewhat rare 727-100 and the DC-10 at the end.
@@AviationCommercials *narf*
...i hope they get some A220s... perfect to replace the MD 80s 🙏
@@AviationCommercials I rode on the Boeing 727-200, 757, 767-200 and 767-300, DC-10, and the MD-80. I have also taken photos of those planes as well.
Those WERE the days!
I love this one and love flying I flew to Berlin with my brother Kent and had a ball.
Those were the days my friends before flying went to hell.
I was a child then, flying 'unaccompanied' to visit my dad. And even though a cross-country flight was special occasion enough, the crews really did provide those little extras to make us feel worthwhile. The menus and the dampened linen cloths before dinner, the set-of-wings pins given to young passengers, the friendly manner that felt sincere. And most passengers added to that ambiance by dressing for travel. Now most (except for the really young) just seem to treat air travel as an ordeal, and the plane itself as their living room. I know that has everything to due with overcrowding and decreased amenities and the post- 9/11 'new normal', but it still saddens me.
Ah... institutionals. I remember when companies did this.
From a strictly advertisingish standpoint, I think this is the best American spot from the modern age --- largely because nothing new enough to be HD uses this theme. It's probably tied with stewardess/cat/60 overall (and I'm assuming that's enough tag for people watching this spot. :-))
Epic, tho the TWA commercial tops this I admit
In the backend I can see which one was more popular each week. Its usually the TWA one. :P
From American to Spirit in one short generation
Those Were The Days.
NANCY EHRHART is SMOKING HOT!!!! What a cutie!!!!!!!
My father was a American airlines co-pilot in DC 10
Hey that's a good plane
Comercial incrível
I actually (in a totally not weird way) looked up these names to see where they ended up longterm. Sadly, most are gone. But they all went on to have great careers with American!
The livery change is one if not the biggest downgrade in history
Airlines Should Bring Back In-flight Meals.
Delta has been. I flew BOS-SEA and they offered coach a small selection of actual meals.
No no no no no no
they do on long haul routes such as tokyo and london.
great commercial miss the old days being from 82 didn't expect to see the death cruiser at the end
Oh… 💀
We no longer have good airline commercials.
I love these old ad jingles
So cheesy yet catchy
When traveling was alot of fun,I wouldn't even set foot on an airport unless I really really have to.
I hear you.
All good things come to an end
thats amazinggggggggggggggggggggg
I guess this is when they never forget people's luggage I guess
The 1980s were something different… 🥹
Edit: I was born 2009.
When I clicked on vid I got 2024 add for Aer Lingus lol.
I was in this commercial and was wondering if you had the shorter version?
Hello Nancy, I do have a shorter version. Let me know if this is what you were looking for. - ruclips.net/video/jSmx-VlhEZw/видео.html
Was their motto "We're American Airlines. Something special in the air" before or after this motto?
Great question. That marking campaign came after this one.
@@AviationCommercials Thanks! "Something special in the air" is a more memorable phrase
We work a lil longer till we find a better way🎵
This is literally the most 1980's commercial I have ever seen.
Good
Nice 😁✈️
Funny, but I don't remember ever flying American Airlines (I've been flying since the 1970s so that covers a lot of years!) Maybe because I live in Atlanta I usually default to Delta - with a few others thrown in here or there - but to my knowledge I've never flown AA.
Where are all these employees now?
AppleClassicGamer It’s not the employees that are the problem. The flying public these days are trash!
Yes,society has degenerated to utterly low levels and basic decency has all but disappeared from sight. I remember flying both AA and TWA back in the 70s and 80s..much more refined ckientele,well-dressed and well-mannered,and in-flight meals were superb! The America I knew as a young adult back then is almost unrecognizable..God help our beleaguered and wounded nation!🙏🇺🇸
@@valentinooliveri3012 Amen!

All the complainers in this comment section.... People want bus fares, they will end up getting bus service.
I remind friends that I paid $250 round trip on Delta BOS-FLL in 1990. I can pay the same amount today on JetBlue. This is not really sustainable.
isn't Spirit airlines a flying Greyhound bus?
Doing what we do Best
❤❤❤❤
damn a 727
I remember when American airlines used to advertise we spent a million dollars a day cleaning our airplanes and had a picture of a trash can say we do we don't fly trash cans or something but million dollars a day unbelievable now they just say pick up the big stuff and go that passengers don't care about dropping a table tray if they're dirt on there or drink spill they just want to get to where they're going on time I say in the wrong somebody that saved up for a family for a year or two to go to on vacation 567,000 and they're excited and they're going to Disney world and the kids get on there and everybody gets on there and they drop the table tray and there's coatesville everywhere and peanuts in the sea or chips all over the floor and they were used to tell us let it Go boredom we got to go pick up big newspapers and go they do care they don't want that they want a few more minutes to have a clean seat it's sad with this airliners done today really is they don't care like they used to

We try a little harder every night and every day
they aren't giving their best these days
Please stop nostalgizing about how much _better_ flying was in those days. By 1982, we were four years into the de-regulation of the airlines and everyone was complaining that fares were far more expensive, airports were overcrowded, the smaller cities had lost their best service. Things always seem better when we are looking at advertisements, but c'mon folks.
Poor m😊
