    Thanks for showing us the turntable in such detail Oscar it was a joy to see 1950's engineering simple but very effective. Imagine working on the assembly line putting those points together with the fiddly little screws, a stint on the packaging origami section could have been quite a therapeutic after that.

      Yes, simple but effective and still working after all this time. Not sure I would enjoy the assembly line though.

    Another fascinating video, Oscar . Some fairly involved assembly there . No wonder the turntable was relatively expensive . Charming models though . Who would have thought that 60+ years on these models would still be running and giving pleasure . Fantastic .

    My better half has just used a food mixer in the kitchen, belnding up gravy for Sunday lunch. Sounds just like a Trinag turntable:-) I've not seen the station set in an end flap box, before, I still regard the buildings as looking far better than the modern ones. I've seen numerous pictures of assembly lines at Margate using the straight platform sections as parts trays! Great viideo as ever, thank you.

      @@oscarpaisley absolutely. And regardless of whether things were to scale or not, it's still a massive investment in tooling that is simply unheard of nowadays. I'm not sure how many modeller appreciate how involved mould tools are to machine. And in fact how large the tooling is.

    Another excellent video Oscar. The beauty of the R45 turntable was it was completely serviceable, and any part could be replaced instead of being totally enclosed, and difficult to fix if something failed. Loved that old station as well!!

    Gosh I had all of those once in the 1960's. A second hand turntable, a 3F, those coaches and some Standard track. On my current layout I had a Peco turntable which was a bit a bit erratic due to my kack handedness. so I ended up replacing it with the modern Hornby turntable. It didn't work out of the box and had to be 'freed' up. It is like your one, noisy as a food mixer and the components are plastic and fragile. In fact your one is toylike but seems the more durable!

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 года назад

      Great to hear you had those items. I have heard that the contemporary Hornby turntables are a bit temperamental.

    Nice to see you going back to some earlier Tri-ang items. The moving part of the points are better termed as the switchblades; the frog is the intersection between the different rails. That station building took me back; yes the chimney was a separate push fit into the roof. Great stuff again Oscar! Got any TT?

    Just another "odd" fact.. The Station steps carried the number R 67, but were available as either "right hand" or "left hand steps.. However all of the ones that I have, carry the same number with no distinction as to which side steps it had.. I guess it was "pot luck as to which side that you got?
    I find this a little "odd" , when Tri-ang usually always added an " L" or "R" to any other of their numbers, in order to show the difference? .

    It had a fuse because the turntable mechanism was actually powered all of the time from the transformer. It operated by pressing the button that worked it's "starting" solenoid.. Not many other items at that time were connected to power for more than a few seconds at a time? Interesting that it was a one and a half amp fuse when the transformer output was only one amp?

    Hi, I am not sure if you read comments on a 3 year old video but here goes. I have just bought an R.45 Triang Turntable the part of the motor that holds the brushes broke. Having looked at the service sheet, I noted that the motor is an X04 and tried to replace the motor but the holes in the motor are too small to accept the screws. I enlarged those but am getting intermittent operation from the motor. Please can you tell me if both sides of the “Y” wire on top of the motor should be insulated? On mine, someone has cut extra notches in the base plate to allow the turntable to do more stops than just turn 180 degrees. I don’t have the control lead to operate it. I think I might have to remove the notching piece and the motor assembly and find another way to turn the table, either by hand or something mechanical. Thanks for the video, it was very useful. Steve

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  Год назад +1

      Good morning Steve, that sounds quite interesting. Somebody's put additional notches in the extra stops. I'll be interested to hear if it works. When looking at the top of the motor, both sides of the brush spring "Y" insulated from the motor as all of the wires are yellow, it's quite difficult to describe how they are connected. I've included my email address below. If you email me, I will send you photographs so you're able to trace back where each wire goes. I've not use the control leads that came in the box. From memory the two outside wires feed the turntable and centre wire is the control but sadly, as I'm writing, I'm unable to remember which worth it makes contact with to operate the solenoid start/stop, I will check and include information if you email me, it's easily checked with a meter.

    I have some of that track, It's not in quite as good condition as yours, most of the tabs are broken and one curve is very warped. Mine is the small radius curves and the later version of the point without motor. I think it was from a Trans Continental set, the loco is in pieces but the rolling stock is still in reasonable shape. That turntable certainly has a strong industrial sound to it.
