Bathory was probably the only first wave band that actually nailed the second wave’s sound. It’s amazing how ahead of its time this album was
2nd wave BM was basically Bathory worship. Even Fenriz referred to blast beats simply as the "Bathory beat." It's more evident on UTSOTBM.
Quite heavily thrash inspired the first wave I think, Sodom's early albums are quite similar

To me there will never be anything quite like the original wave of Black Metal music. The rawness of Bathory's first album is my favorite. I especially love the guitar solos at the 2nd half of this song. Feels like a real establishment of the Black Metal sound.
As someone who's got into black metal only like 2 years ago I agree. Even though I started with Mayhem the only second wave bands I like are darkthrone, burzum and satyricon. I also like the newer stuff like këkht aräkh, blackbraid, xasthur, agalloch. But I don't really get second wave. Most of it to me sounds like shit. But first wave is awesome. Bathory, Sodom, Venom all very good. Even though most of them are probably not even considered black metal.
I really can't understand why are people comparing Bathory with Venom. They were the two that invented Black Metal. Venom gave its name, Bathory gave its shape. Both bands are great.

Listen to Venom's song Lady Lust, it was released as a B side to a single many months before Bathory's first album, there are some Bathory songs that were released on a compilation before Lady Lust came out, but the style is way different than what's on the first album.
Lady lust might as well be a Bathory song, same energy, same speed, very similar production style, I wouldn't be surprised if Quorthon owned that single.
Venom is like the 'Posessed' of black metal, Bathory is like the 'Death' of black metal

Bought this back in 84 when it came out. I'd forgotten how massively buzzy and trebly the guitars were, how you can hardly hear the drums or bass. Still loved it at the time, hadn't heard anything like it before.
The trashiness of the sound is what I love about a lot of black metal songs.

Well Bathory is the Judas Priest of Black Metal thats for sure.
Would you rather listen to this song or Witching Hour? One is easier to perform and doesn't grow on you due to it's simplicity and lack of subtlety in moody song structures and the other is not so easy to perform and is more challenging to those who like a challenge.
People mostly forget Sodom, they were also the foundation for the early BM sound.
