The only thing that I would say is “scary” is when a ride goes up the hill slowly before dropping. That’s what gives me that stomach dropping feeling I don’t like

for me the best way is the saying “the anticipation is always worse than the act itself” and wow it’s SO true for roller coasters, the ones that look tall or scary are usually the most fun, I was terrified of Nitro at Great Adventure (home park) until I went on it and had a blast, and from there I really started to enjoy and get into roller coasters

In like 2012 when I was 10, I went to great adventure for the first time and I had never been on a roller coaster over 100 feet before. I was just barely tall enough to go on the bigger rides (54” I believe). And I thought “hey, since I’m gonna go on all these big rides, Nitro would be a good warm up”. I had seen many POVs of Nitro before so I thought I’d be fine. I was absolutely shitting my pants going up the lift hill. And my dad was sitting next to me and he didn’t help at all. He was on the end and kept saying “damn look how high we are”. I terrified for the first drop and first hill but I was fine after that. Nitro became my all time favorite roller coaster for a while. That was until I got like 3 incredible rides on El Toro in 2017.

reminds me of the Will Smith video of his skydiving. He made a point that we have a fear of something, but really, as soon as we jump out of the plane, we are perfectly safe. It is when we jump out of the plane is when we have the most danger, but yet, we don't think that. Freefalling is very cool, and not scary. So the worst fear that we have is only the anticipation, not the actual imminent danger.

    • @blitzn00dle50
      @blitzn00dle50 2 года назад +187

for nausea, I suggest sitting in the front row and never closing your eyes. Motion sickness happens when your eyes show stillness while you feel motion, so having nothing obstructing your view will clear up the confusion in your mind and lead you to not get sick

if it’s any help, the more rollercoasters you get on, the less of that feeling you’ll get. i used to get extreme feelings of the g-force in my stomach even on small rollercoasters years ago, but when i started to ride bigger rollercoasters, the more it started to go away. i was at universal studios and six flags a couple months ago, rode the biggest rides there, and didn’t feel a single thing. it’s just like practice. if you really wanna avoid that feeling then try to sit as close to the front as you can.

To those who are afraid of feeling the forces, I have some good tips that might help you enjoy it rather than hate it. All the fear and uncomfortable stress associated with that feeling is purely in the mind, and taking the right steps could help shift that mentality.
    1. It's really good not to overthink big rides, and though its often reccomended that you warm up with small rides first, I personally find this step to be crucial. Prepare yourself all you can without falling into fear! A few months ago, I made the big mistake of going on a huge waterslide right when I got to the park, not having ridden anything like it for almost a year. It shocked the hell out of me and tricked me into believing I hated it. In reality, I tried it again later and it was awesome. Went on it over and over after that.
    2. Don't be shy about screaming! You're at an amusement park. If you scream when you're falling, it often helps balance out the mental feeling of the intensity you're experiencing. If you try to hold it in, it will create a lot more stress, and chances of you actually having fun will decrease. If you're self conscious about others hearing you, don't be. The only few times I've ever heard anyone complain about screamers were on small rides where it's not really necessary.
    3. Embrace the experience fully. If it's possible, do everything you can not to close your eyes or scrunch up your body. If you get there, try even putting your hands up! It will be scary the first time, but if you're able to show your mind that you can relax while on the ride, it will begin to associate the feeling less with stress and more with pleasure.
I hope these suggestions work for some of you. I've been struggling with these same fears my whole life as a thrill rider, but, slowly, I've been making progress. Remember, everyone has a different solution! Always go with what you're most comfortable with, and always follow your gut.
EDIT: I'm so glad this comment has been helping everyone! Yesterday, I went to Cedar Point for the first time in a year. Using my own advice, I was able to conquer 3 coasters I had never been on. I also got to re-ride a few rides that I've tried before but ended up hating. This time around, they were a lot more manageable, and I had lots of fun on every single ride I went on! This made me realize something else: if you don't like something the first time, you can always try, try again. Trust me! It's a lot less scary when you know what to expect. If you go on it again and still hate it, that's okay. Don't push yourself!
Personally, the ride I had the most trouble with yesterday was the Raptor. I spent so much time mentally preparing myself for the first drop (which ended up going perfectly fine) that I didn't even think about the intensity of the rest of the ride (which has many tight inversions). I felt sick by the end of it, most likely because I was somewhat dehydrated at the time. Also, I was sitting in the very back, so that probably wasn't the best thing to start with! Despite this, I still plan to ride it again with the correct ideals in mind the next time I go in a week or two with my gold pass. I'll tell you all how it goes!

I went on a wooden coaster with no loops just hills thinking it'll be easy peezy but it had some of the worst falling out of your seat feelings of any ride I've been on. Compared to a floorless coaster with loops and tight turns that was so smooth and easy to ride.

    Fun story:
In my middle school years, I was DEATHLY afraid of coasters. Like, just listening to them pass by with what sounded like 100mph winds made me think they were WAY worse than they actually are. The sounds they made as they went through the layout (the B&M sound, y'all know what I mean) was dreadful to me, and I would think "That's more of an adult ride, I'll wait till I'm older." It wasn't until I was 14 or so in 8th grade where I mustered up the courage to ride Dueling Dragons at IOA with my mom and my school friends. I was the next in line to board and I was already tearing up. I didn't know what to think, or how it would feel. I just knew that I HAD to do it. And let me tell ya, after that first drop, I smiled and laughed so much. By the end of the ride, I looked straight at my mom and said "That was freaking awesome." We went straight back in line to ride the red dragon and I loved it even more. I had no idea what I was scared of, and I went to ride Hulk the same day. Some advice I’d give:
    1. One thing that really helped me as I built up through rides was to remind myself “I’ve never been on a thrill ride I haven’t enjoyed.” When I went on Tower of Terror, I reminded myself I loved frog hoppers as a kid and the vertical drop on verbolten. When I was nervous about the stomach drop feeling I thought about that ride on Tower of Terror and how I actually enjoyed it.
    2. That stomach drop feeling you get is actually mostly from acceleration. That’s why you feel it on a launch. Understand that if you are on a hyper coaster, apollos chariot or something like that, you’ll feel the first drop but once you’ve built up the speed, the rest of the drops will mostly give you airtime and won’t drop your stomach nearly as much.
    3. Lots of rides have an intimidating appearance. Just push yourself past that initial fear, get on the ride, and I promise you’ll have a great time.
    4. If you’re watching this video, it probably means you want to get into coasters and get over your fear. Understand that there is a reason you want to ride coasters and that you, at least to a certain degree, enjoy or want to enjoy the feeling of being on a roller coaster. Go get ‘em.

It rlly helped that the rollercoaster goes fast as hell so most inversions and drops (like the big one at the end) i just ended up not feeling them, i actually felt like i was being PUSHED DOWN on my seat during on that last drop. I'll tell you how I got over my fear.
My band took our highschool trip to orlando flordia and we went to universal, islands of adventure, and disney. There is nothing like peer pressure to make you stand in line for Rip Ride Rockit as your first coaster ever trying not to let your friends know you are scared and have never been on a real one.... I had a blast the rest of the trip lol, wanted to ride everything
TIP: Scream and breathe. Breathe in when going up or at the top of a hill before a long drop. This will help you from greying out since you are getting oxygen to you brain. (a lot of people forget to breathe after the first drop where they just let out all their air screaming which might cause you to grey out when you wouldn't otherwise)... And screaming aliviates that stomach drop feeling a ton compared to bottling it up and trying to win against the coaster.

I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with roller coasters. I usually enjoy them after I ride them, but I'm initially scared of going on (more specifically large roller coasters, especially if they go upside down). I think there's two reasons for this. One, I'm afraid of something going wrong. I know it's unlikely, I know roller coasters are designed to be incredibly safe, but there's no way to guarantee that nothing will go wrong (especially since humans are the ones operating them. Most accidents seem to be a result of human error). Second, and I'm not sure if this makes sense, but I hate the feeling of being afraid. I'm worried that instead of the ride being exhilarating and exciting, I'll just be scared the entire time and not fully enjoy it (which to be fair, hasn't happened yet. I almost always end up enjoying the ride).

I just so happened to follow it back in 2011 to get over my fear of coasters. Personally, I think could talk someone into getting a ride on Millie before Gemini though. I’ve spoken with a few different people who are afraid of coasters, and they all said if they had some scenery to take in while going up the lift, that would make them feel more at ease. Also, as you’ve said in your video, it’s best to get on these things and not think twice, at least until the ride has begun.

If you don’t end up liking it, it was just a couple minutes of your life, you’ll get over it and move on. If you do like it, great! You can do it again and with more confidence that you’ll enjoy it. I'm working my way up to bigger and bigger rides. The thing that helps me get on the ride is that it's only going to be, at most, 5 minutes of my life. After the small amount of time is up, I will know if I loved it, or hated it. Pushing those boundaries slightly further every time is worth it imo. It doesn't help with the pre ride anxiety, but it helps me commit and make sure I'm strapped in to whatever ride I have chosen.

This is probably the one thing I struggle with while getting on a coaster. My body experiences anxiety so overwhelmingly and deeply (due to my anxiety disorder) and it's so much I physically cannot think of it as excitement. I have almost (and once fully) passed out waiting for a roller coaster. My entire body basically shuts down when I have a panic attack which are almost always triggered by roller coasters, no matter the size. You don't shut down when you're exited...

While waiting in line, I almost puked and kept drinking water to calm myself. I was sweating like crazy, I felt like I was gonna faint. But once I got on the coaster, all my fears washed away. I usually try to convince myself that I won't regret it at all and I'd have an amazing time (I'm that type of person who is scared shitless but after the ride I'll go all like "LeTs dO iT AgAin!!!1!" It usually doesn't make my crippling anxiety fully go away, but it does help to some extent.

To me it's really simple (as someone who felt terrible about going down drops). You start small. You endure it. Once you've got the hang of it, your adrenaline will ask for more. It's addictive. So you go to the next largest, and so on, and so on. Surprisingly, the larger they get the less you'll feel the drop *because* you've been on more and your adrenaline is hyped and asking for more.

The advice about watching POV videos of the coaster before going on if you're scared is great advice and something I've done for a long time. I know some people will say it takes away part of the experience because you're seeing what the ride is like before you go on it, but when you're someone like me, who tends to psyche themselves out because their imagination makes them think the ride is going to be more intense than it it when they aren't able to see it ahead of time, being able to actually see the track layout before going on, and get a sense of how long the drops take, is a lifesaver and I probably wouldn't go on as many roller coasters as I have without being able to do that.

One thing that helped me to take big rollercoasters, even though I was scared to take them, was to either arrive super early or stay super late in the park. At these times there are extremely few people in the park meaning extremely short lines, if not no line at all. Most people that are scared to take rollercoasters tend to second guess their decision when waiting in line. With no line at all, I'm just focused on breathing controlled and walking determined towards the coaster and just get in it.
I have done this multiple times and I have yet to have a bad experience on a big rollercoaster. Last time I did it was "Valkyria" in Liseberg. I was petrified before taking it, but me, my bro and my dad found a gap in the middle of the day when there was around 21-30 minutes of waiting in line.
Probably one of the most amusing and thrilling rollercoaster I have ever taken!

My experiences so far to inspire others~ When I was a kid, I was incredibly scared of roller coasters. I have a fear of heights, and I was scared I would throw up (something I would feel embarrassed by, I found it gross, and throwing up always made me cry). My mother encouraged me to go with her on a family friendly kid roller coaster, and that went great! It is the best place to start in my opinion. Eventually, I would go on a bit of an intenser coaster, but I would always skip the truly intense ones and the ones that had loops. Again, because I was afraid of heights and the fear of embarrassing myself. One day, during a school trip, I was forced by some of my "friends" to go in the Python (Efteling roller coaster). I was incredibly nervous and refused to eat prior to the ride. What made it worse was that my "friends" were making fun of me by making gagging noises (incredibly childish). In my head I encouraged myself, saying stuff like that it would be over before I knew it, and that I had never seen people throw up after a ride (if that happened, the people would have already been feeling a bit under the weather anyway). I got on the ride, clutched the restraints and told myself to keep on breathing. Oh dear, I found the lift incredibly scary. Getting high up in the sky... and eventually the drop... Clutching the restraints gave me a sense of security. And then the train accelerated a bit before the drop. I squeezed my eyes shut and shrunk... and then the drop happened. It was over before I knew it! And the first loop, too! In fact, the loop wasn't scary it all! It felt freeing, good, and thus I started to laugh and enjoy the ride with the biggest smile on my face! Afterwards, I was so incredibly proud of myself :) I still find the lift and the drop a bit scary, and I still squeeze my eyes shut during the drop, but once that part is over (in like 2 to 3 seconds), a roller coaster is not that scary anymore!
The Baron is a dive coaster in the Efteling. I refuse to sit in the front row seat, but I have sat in the 2nd and 3rd row. I still dislike the lift part and I also hate the moment where the cart just comes to a halt right before the drop, but once that is over, I find the rollar coaster incredibly enjoyable! So, in conclusion: there's still a little bit of fear in me, but that won't stop me from getting on a roller coaster 😁 So, you can do it too ❤

You should be proud! I had a really hard time getting over my fear too, but after doing Kondaa at Walibi Belgium which absolutely terrified me with it's height, I now feel like if I ended up loving this one, I can do anything. The slow lift hills are also the worst part for me, slowly getting higher and higher, gives me plenty of time to worry haha. I try to focus on the seat in front of me and don't look around me so I can see how high up I am. Then the drop might be terrifying at first, but it's over in two seconds and after that you're just going through the track so fast you don't even have time to realize how high up you are or anything. I now have the mindset of just giving them all a try, and if I end up not liking it it's always over very quickly.
Also, I still really recommend trying the front row on Baron! The first time I went on it they put me there without me realizing it and I was absolutely terrified when I was slowly going up the hill and then stopping at the top. It was scary, but then the drop is so fast it's over very quickly and after that it's just fun thrills! And every time I ride it again, that fear is replaced by excitement more and more. I think you can do it!

I used to be scared of coasters too, and funny enough, the thing I did to get over my fear was just going on the biggest one in the park.
The idea of working up to the biggest one sounds better in theory, as most people aren't quite ready to immediately hit the most intimidating thing in the park, but what I will say is that when you're scared of coasters and you're slowly working up, putting yourself on things with increasing intimidation over time, you spend more time being scared of each individual one than just the one to begin with.
You might not be ready for the biggest, but in your mind, you aren't really ready for ANY of them. Going on the biggest one first will be as scary as going on any of the other ones, but the moment you finish the ride and realize how fun it is, you won't spend all your time waiting in other ride lines feeling nauseous or scared.

Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong wrong *wrong.* If someone is truly terrified of rollercoasters, and they go on a mean one first, it will make their fear worse. They’ll hate it. Close their eyes. And it will only reaffirm their reservations and make it harder to go on coasters. Then you’re even deeper in the hole. This is how a lot of people end up with the phobia to begin with. They have a bad experience when they’re younger, or get pressured into something they couldn’t handle.
You work your way up. You start with something chill, like Big Thunder or something. After the first time and you had fun, ride it over and over again. Learn to enjoy it. Get used to relinquishing control and the sensations and forces of the coaster. Get used to the air time, to trusting the restraints, lift hills. Maybe even put your hands up. Once that’s fun. It’s time to up the ante.
Maybe you think, I can handle a little launch now, it’s not high, no inversions, not backwards. It’ll be like Big Thunder but faster. That goes well too. Okay, maybe now I can handle a backwards launch. One inversion. A bigger drop. Two inversions. You don’t spend hours being scared of them all. You build it up in your head that you’re ready for it because you know what’s coming and how it compares to what you’re used to. It turns the fear into excitement incrementally. Such that you’d be disappointed to not get the chance to push the envelope a little more each time.
Next thing you know you’re on Iron Gwazi and Velocicoaster having a blast. Full sending it does not work for most people if they have a real fear. Full send only works for people who are intimidated/inexperienced, not mortally terrified with all the physical symptoms that manifest with that. Especially if they get unlucky and try to send it on a rough, janky coaster.

Not everyone works the same, but not once have i ever heard people gaining fears from riding coasters. It's generall quite the opposite. Only way to get over them is to ride them. If it was different for you then sure, no need to go all out immediately, but it's awfully wild to discount a method i've shared that has worked on me and many others.

I've never been scared of roller coasters, so the strategy I tell anyone who's hesitant to ride is to just get in line without any second thoughts. If they don't think twice about what they're going to ride then they'll have a higher chance of getting on and then (hopefully) enjoying the ride. If they're afraid of their safety, I always make sure to let the person know that you are completely safe and continuously reassure them that throughout the line and before they get on.
Anyways, what are your favorite coasters you've ridden? My favorite is Velocicoaster at Islands of Adventure

Another note I should add is that a lot of the time the anticipation to get on the ride is a lot worse than actually riding it. I remember being about eleven years old and going on my first rollercoaster, the Dueling Dragons ride at Universal Florida. Even just looking at the coaster made my stomach feel sick. Then, once I rode it, realized I was still alive and not having a panic attack, the sick feeling completely went away. I then managed to immediately start riding all the other thrill rides in the entire park and became addicted super fast.

As someone who was terrified, always considering the issues, I looked more into how they were built. Once I realized it wasn't the coaster, it was me, I decided to take a more scientific approach.
This helped me more-so than anything else and here's what I did:
I got in the middle of the cart, putting trusted people next to me in case anything happened. I stopped my emotions from getting in my way but focused on what my body was feeling throughout the ride, closing my eyes if necessary. Once I recognized where I could feel myself being pushed into the seat and where I felt I was coming out of my seat, I took note. I went on again, now knowing what I was going to feel when. Sometimes all you've gotta do is pretend you're doing a scientific study, not as if you're about to "die." Having someone who knows basic engineering helps, my bf explains how each of the restraints work for me before the ride. If you don't have that person, videos like these are great.

Story time. I was deadly afraid of coasters until my adulthood. I never rode any until I was almost 20. You name it I was terrified of it. Heights, the stomach drops, malfunctioning, and more. I would get on some rides, but never anything like roller coasters. Lemme tell you. I feel like I jipped myself from so much fun at amusement parks over the years. Luckily, some friends managed to convince me and I'm glad I did. I still don't push myself to try certain ones. I definitely won't touch any that go backwards. But I do enjoy them way more than I ever thought possible. I still have fear, especially with bigger ones. I don't like the sound of the lift or the start of them either, but after the first drop, it's a breeze from there on. The funny part is I actually love inversion, speed, and loops the best during the ride.

I was forced on my first coaster too, which wasn't an intense coaster at all, really. It's the Flying Dutchman, at Efteling.
I was barely the right size and my family all went on it and they wouldn't leave me alone in the park. The queue is scary but we'll crafted. And the station is gorgeous. Then we went on the ride. Not knowing what came next in the darkride section was scary af. One part was particularly scary. The coaster itself wasn't as scary as the darkride. But I do remember a sudden drop and a banked turn, which made me feel as if I was falling out of the train.
I'm not afraid of heights. But I am afraid of it on coasters, because I know I'll go down with rapid speeds, without control. Nowadays I do enjoy coasters a lot but I haven't been on a huge coaster so far. (Biggest I've been on are Baron 1898 at Efteling and Troy at Toverland)

Ok so for anyone who still has doubts about feelings, I'll quickly explain my version of basic inversions/experiences
Loop- Feels like you're going forward and up non-stop, very tame
Corkscrew- You basically start to turn into a bank like you would on a tight-ish turn then go up while turning, some corkscrews just make you feel like your on a trampoline jumping really high and feeling weightless
Any sort of launch- Small sharp jolt with a stomach drop then speed, the stomach drop is extremely fast and you might not even notice it (you probably will notice it unless it's a gradual launch like Slinky Dog Dash)
Lift hill- 30 seconds of anxiety (it's worth it tho I promise)
Big drop- Ok so here's the most intimidating/feared one, for me I love em. You'll start to feel a little bit of speed increase then a sharp-ish pull downwards, after that you get the stomach drop, some rides have very intense drops that make you clench your teeth and/or close your eyes but most rides feel more like a speedy slope than a pull downwards. A good way to conquer this one is to ride drop towers like Tower of Terror, short stomach drops with varying intensity. Another thing, on rides like the Goliath at Six Flags over Georgia, the big first drop usually isn't too intense but more of a slight pull downwards and some weightlessness. The Goliath has a surprisingly tame first drop despite the height. This one is really all about getting over the first hill.
Hope this helped explain the general feeling you'll endure on most rides! It was hard for me to get into coasters since I have bad anxiety but I made the leap and I'm so glad I did!

I was so scared that I literally said "I can't ride this" and started to stand up but the cast member immediately started the ride and I was forced to rethink my life😂 and it was so strange because I felt nothing on the drop (maybe bc I was sitting more in the front?). I'm going on it again tomorrow so I can sit in the back and get used to the drop feeling so I can tackle incredicoaster
Honestly it's all about exposure therapy. I recommend riding Goofy's Sky School a lot and radiator springs, and rise of the resistance. Also I recently stopped being scared of the Pirates drop because I sat up straight and kept my eyes open the whole time and screamed, and it's kind of like you "absorb" the feeling. Once your brain and body can understand that the drop feeling doesn't equal anything dangerous, it gets a lot easier.
      Hope this helps!
