Outrageously funny, but hard hitting, these stories in the late 1990's and early 2000's made Scott Lewis a household name in Detroit. They exposed shameful slacking in a city once known for it's hard work ethic and put a stop to a lot of the outrageous behavior by some so-called workers.

Same here in Germany. Up until the early '80s, even our federal employees have been drinking on the job.
Now we call these old-fashioned people alcoholics and think ourselves better, it seems.
But then again, back in the day pregnant people smoked, we pumped leaded gasoline into our air polluters and built shit from asbestos. Things are for the better the way they are, no drinking on the job should be normal and we're trying our best. Not even being able to have a cold one at the company picnic is pure idiocy, tho.

Update: Both these guys was promoted, after this investigation was made public. Their supervisors and the mayor now has a connection for weed, hookers, and 20% off at the local watering hole, Government spending at its best.

There is no need or incentive to produce anything so they abuse their time on the taxpayer dollar.
This is ABSOLUTELY happening more than we think, and these people feel entitled to do this.
The water was running in Detroit and these dudes did their thing- A better example of government waste would be if they burned pallets of money instead of joints.

I worked 2 summers for "The Water Dept" in college in an undisclosed city. I could go on for hours - these guys did NOTHING. Typical day: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM....sat in a recliner in the water dept office B.S. with the guys. 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM, drove around to check on wells. 10:00 AM to 10:45ish AM - coffee break and played cards. 10:45 AM - 12:00 PM - most days, drove around doing almost nothing. 12:00 - 1:00 PM - lunch hour. 1:00 - 1:30ish - sat in recliner to digest lunch. 1:30 - 3:00 PM - kinda, sorta worked. 3:00 - 3:45ish - coffee break/played cards. 3:45ish - 5:00, kinda, sorta, worked. 5:00 done!
they've been doing this for years. I remember back in the 80's we had a busted street & it was cold out. city van pulled up , four workers got out put some orange cones around the hole in the road got back in the van & sat there all day didn't do shit. about 4pm they drove off. took them all week to repair a 4x4 foot hole in the road lol

I'm 72...I'd see that as a kid and dad would always point put that it was the one old timer doing the work while all the guys guys stood around leaning in shovels, smoking, bullshitting and drinking what appeared to be coffee...
I know people that work for the city of L.A AND D.W.P And they say this is exactly how they spend their days. Drinking and hanging out at the parks.

Big city politics. I worked for a road crew in LA for 8yrs. And I worked for road crew in very small cities. Small city road crew gets a lot more work done. In LA about half the workers never lifted a finger. Very sad. I went for LAPD interview. The first Q. Was “what if u are working with a training officer on the nite shift and he wants to sleep all nite?” Lol. You can’t make this stuff up.
They did wait until after noon though.
Pretty much any government workers are lazy as shit. The money is guaranteed, there’s no real oversight to make sure things are getting done. And plenty of inefficiency to blend in with. Over-staffed, over-paid, and under-productive.
Mista Butterworth big cities yes. Less so in smaller cities. I worked for many different regions of California and it fluctuates a lot. But I also worked for private outfits and they worn twice as hard because the profit margin is so slim

Corrected what? They got chewed out for getting caught and that's it. No need to bother with anything when the union will win in the end and just cost the city a bunch of money. This occurs at every government job with no oversight and does so because the bosses are just as bad.

The supervisor was aware of them drinking on duty that shows negligence. Hes fired not to mention hes also been drinking.

If all fails the union gets sued for letting this happen on the clock..union reps are fired...called the snowball effect. Lucky I wasn't their supervisor I hate fuckers like this. mikel carrow Your answer shows a lack of experience with unions and seniority, especially in a place like Detroit. First of all, in order for one to lose their license for this it has to be proven that one is actually intoxicated. Many idiots would simply admit they're wrong and lose it that way but in reality if it can't be easily proven that one is actually intoxicated, especially if it's someone who has drank and smoked pot daily for 20 years and has become generally used to their effects; in such a case it's not going to happen. Furthermore, if one had lost their license in such an environment they'd simply take their seniority and do something else. They can ride in the passenger seat right next to another driver with more or less seniority. Either way, a worker with seniority isn't just going away. If the Union wants to shut the city down over the threat to some of their workers, it can. On top of that, their own bosses are shit bags and get away with much worse. This problem goes right up to the top. I've worked for the city and there's no stopping it.

Out here the timcards must match. So if they say a 30 min lunch it better show. I've seen 20 year guys get walked out. If someone is said to be drinking on duty a random test is done, they lose time on their time sheet by lowering their payrate for a certain amount of time. In california the unions aren't as powerful because this shit happens to much. This video is old so if this is California I bet these guys are not employed right now. these assholes in the video would've been walked out. The supervisor may have kept his job but he would be probation.
