What has been the key to Patrick Mahomes' early-season dominance?

I think the key to Pat is he spent the extra time in the film room studying with Alex Smith. People can dismiss this kid as a fluke all they want, but not many if any young QB's are able to read the defense properly and make adjustment and to me that's what seperates the good ones from the great ones. When he was drafted last year, his footwork was terrible and he spent extra time working on it and now he looks good in the pocket. If the Defense can somehow get better this team is gonna win a lot of games.

He got the perfect type of receivers around him for his skill set. If he had traditional route running possesion receivers like most teams do, he wouldn't be as productive. He's very good at lead the receiver throws while they are in stride because it requires less finesse like it does to throw to tight spaces. 20% of his throws were into tight spaces. That means 80% was wide open. Plus a great O-line to give him just enough time. This is the type of offense Michael Vick and Colin Kaepernick would have thrived with.

I only say this because I do mostly enjoy this show. I'm done with Carter. I'm dome with his condescending attitude that immediately dismisses any valid argument simply because he played. I honestly enjoy the show more when he isn't there. Chris Canty is a much better candidate to sit across Nick if you feel you need a player's perspective. He's never coy, he's wellspoken, and allows his opinion to be challenged with humility, not impudence. He's the antithesis of Carter. I'll be back in a few months to check in but for now I'm out.

Yes, he learned a lot from Alex Smith but anyone could've learned but, Mahomes has talent and skill. He showed those skills at Texas Tech until the rookie linemen stop protecting him and receivers kept dropping the ball. Patrick Mahomes dropped out of Texas Tech because he recognized what he could do in the NFL. As long as his linemen protect him and receivers don't drop the ball, Patrick Mahomes is unstoppable!

Here are the simple facts. PH has an amazing, accurate, strong, and consistent arm. PH has a head for the game and coverage. KC has the best RB+TD+X+Y+Z combination in the game right now. O-Line has its protection schemes down. PH can accurately throw the ball literally on any blade of grass from his own 20yrd line to the goal line. Defenses cannot double Hill and Kelce and Hunt and Watkins (and surprise Conley) at the same time, and PH sees that before the ball is even snapped. PH also looks down field, not check down close. This is a once in a lifetime NFL moment...and there are a lot of NFL snobs that hate the fact it's happening in my hometown, hayseed hick town KC. Where does it go? Not certain. But enjoy the show while you can, because this is special.

It is too early to tell with Mahomes. He sure looks like the best QB right now though. Like if you were to rank QBs Right now at week 2 he would top the list for sure. Lets see if he can keep it up, that is the mark of greatness. That continued success is where greatness lies, any QB can have a few good games, like Fitzpatrick right now. I am not saying Mahomes isn't good, just too early to call him great. He has all the tools to become great though, and it sucks as a Denver fan to have to play him twice a year.

I love AX7 and yes he helped a great deal to Mahomes growth but let's not get it twisted, Smith never had the talent Mahomes has. Which is why Smith didnt break the 9tds record with the same talent.

His secret is something that not every qb has in the league and ima tell you what it is right now that secret is talent and the strongest arm in the NFL right now this is what happens when you let a talented qb play the way he wants to play he dominates maybe too early but I promise you if he keeps playing like that your looking at a playoff team and the offense player of the year

He's not Aaron Rodgers. He's Aaron Rodgers 2.0. Patrick DOES have "that kind of arm". DeShaun and Jimmy G do NOT have his type of arm talent. Cam isn't as cerebral now as Pat is already. This guarded doubting Thomas pessimism is laughable. The kid didn't sneak passes in behind defenders or lob ducks that his players were lucky to catch. His arm strength, ball placement and reading of the defense are all at an elite level. Watch Rodgers college film, he didn't throw the way we're used to seeing him throw now. Some of that was Brett Favre rubbing off on him. This kid is that good...now. Doing things, as Nick pointed out, no one has EVER done. No one is saying put him in Canton today, there's a whole career to play out. But this kid and Aaron Rodgers are the only two guys in the league that can make ALL the throws the way they make em. Not ten guys (c'mon Cris). Not 5. Maybe Matt Stafford. Beyond that, the velocity, the off platform, the "defense is never safe" kinda throws. Not more than 3 guys right now have that, I'd argue it's 2, and Mahomes is one of them. But keep doubting. While you're thinking about that, think about this. After 30 years of drafting, not a single QB drafted by KC had won a game for the franchise. Pat Mahomes has won his 1st 3 starts vs the Broncos, the Chargers and Steelers... and he has yet to play a home game.
