Optimization is a word thrown about too easily... but its something to keep in mind when it comes to various indie studios. (basically, indie studios sometimes have a harder time optimizing a game well due to their small teams) Of course, a big AAA studio is no better prediction for good optimization... as Ubisoft has shown us repeatedly. But yeah, given that the PC version of the Gunk can run fairly poorly too... its pretty obvious the Gunk devs didn't do a very good job optimizing for all the platforms involved. (Mainly seemed to focus on XSX, as it runs the best there)
It's definitely a bit concerning, considering the low texture resolution, fairly low poly assets used. I mean yes, it's Unreal Engine 4, but that's proven to run very well with just a bit of care taken in development. I'm also a bit perplexed at calling a 25-people studio "small" and so excusing any issues with "but it's a small indie title". It's really not.
@@JMartinni "perplexed at calling a 25-people studio "small" Well... yeah, few people would call a 20 or so person team to be a large studio... and its clear this title didn't have a large budget. I hardly noticed the dips into the 50 fps when I played on my series s. Except for 1 or 2 times in the game but it wasn't bothering 🤷. I m playing on 60hz TV so it should be a huge problem I theory 🤔. Either I m blessed to not feel the problem Or most people make a big deal out of framrate dips🧐
Nice wee game and just about the right length but the chatter did get annoying at times especially talking over the credits. The game did look fantastic at times like when heading towards the Garden.
I started playing this through the cloud streaming to give it a shot. I figured I'd complete a task or two. Honestly the game didn't grab me until just before I was about to stop playing. I said one more task to see what was going on. Then I just downloaded the game and played till it was done. It's a good little casual game that kept me interested and had just enough variety to keep things moving. Worth playing through for a relaxing time (save one or two areas where the combat got a little more complex towards the end).
ohh my little sub 1080p series s you will soon be missed. As a swede i was looking forward to the gunk and was really happy with it a small team and great little game!
Okay, how is my pc that has a gtx 1070 and ryzen 5 1600, running this game on the max graphics preset at 1080p with non of the issues mentioned on these consoles? Also why on earth did the devs have dynamic resolution on consoles but not on pc??! Do the consoles APIs make it easier to implement?
Solid, cute game. I'm not much of a gamer and usually enjoy something a bit more mindless but cool-looking, as this mostly is. Though it gets a bit repetitive at times (and definitely on-the-nose), there was still.enoigh to keep me going to the end. I rarely finish games, so that may say something.
I quite liked the game. Played on a mix of S and X consoles the flaws in this video were rarely seen, I guess when you're deliberately searching you'll more easily see them, but just playing the game for fun you'll barely notice a bad thing. Its quite short, but it could perhaps have been a little bit shorter, getting rid of a bit of the filler.
Such a shame they don't provide a slider for motion blur. Motion blur can really piss off a LOT of people, it must be configurable if you put it in your game.
I am mostly impressed that this is 60fps on series s. In microsofts eye the Series S is not even on par with the Xbox one X, a 30fps system. Although the sub HD resolutions would have a thing or two to do with it. Still IMO the higher framerate is much more enjoyable then the higher resolutions. And on my end I saw no worse for wear in details on the series s. I am really liking the s and really really wish they would make a disk version of the system.
The main reason why games are typically capped at 30 fps on previous gen consoles is that they're almost always CPU bound. There's just no way to hit 60 regardless of how much visual fidelity is sacrificed. While the Series S' GPU is slower than the One X', the CPU is significantly faster.
@@MrFrexxia which is funny because I do 60fps gaming alot on PC with what ever the basic i5 equivalent processors are at the time. (My last 3 we're the q6600, xeon321v3, it 8400).
@@MaNameizJeff The XB1 / PS4 CPU is most easily compared with a severely underclocked fx-8120. It was terrible even back when the consoles first launched.
This is still a cross-gen game. The hardware isn't being fully taken advantage of. The Series S doesn't really have the benefit of brute-forcing any performance issues.
This is a last-gen game. If Series S is struggling to do 1080p 60fps (with mostly 900p 60fps) on last gen game then you can imagine how it would do would true next-gen games. If Unreal Engine 5 Demo is any indication, then we are looking at 720p 30fps range really. People who think Series S will remain 1080p 60fps machine by the end of this generation are delusional.
this is like the Medium and Grounded all over again. I have no idea what games you guys are playing but this game was not memorable or visually attractive. If this wasn't an Xbox exclusive this would be another game forgotten in the mix of quality games.

And people keep falling for it. 900p with Temporal Anti Aliasing is a blurry mess, but good luck explaining Series S fans that.
Love the Steamworld games so I was really looking forward to this. Having played it I just think it’s just average. Below average sometimes
It does look a bit disappointing sadly
Definitely below average. it's a game for those who have a little too much time on their hands / reviewers. Uninstalled pretty quickly.
It’s decent if you want a little break from bigger AAA games. I honestly enjoyed it.
@GreeneThumbs If you have too little time then you don't want to waste it on a quite good/below average (whatever your perspective is) game.
12 TF showcase again. Are the dev kits ready yet?
One of my favourite gaming experiences of 2021 👌
This game was such a fun time. Short and sweet.
Camera blur needs to go, seriously. It drives me nuts when games don't have seperate toggles for per-object and camera blur.
where are the tools
I hardly noticed the dips into the 50 fps when I played on my series s. Except for 1 or 2 times in the game but it wasn't bothering 🤷.
I m playing on 60hz TV so it should be a huge problem I theory 🤔.
Either I m blessed to not feel the problem Or most people make a big deal out of framrate dips🧐
Nice wee game and just about the right length but the chatter did get annoying at times especially talking over the credits.
The game did look fantastic at times like when heading towards the Garden.
To me this game feels like if you gave Luigi's Mansion to classic Rare to produce.
Nice effort from a fairly small dev team, with some interesting gameplay hooks.
This game was such a surprise. Reminded me of Beyond Good and Evil.
Been playing this for the last few days and I’m loving. Very chill and relaxing game and I’m enjoying the story.
The game was great but felt odd to be playing such a good looking game in SDR I thought my Xbox was playing up.
Wow that game looks amazing! Downloading it rn!
Digital Foundry is the main preview of a game before i buy that specific game. So i know for sure i didn't wasted the money.
Is the voice audio slowed? It almost sounds like it's at like 90% speed
The thought of sub 1080p on a large TV makes my brain hurt
Really enjoyed this game, the ost is definitely my favorite part.
Really enjoying it so far. Has a real old school platformer vibe to it.
I really had fun with this game. It's the first game I played on my new LG OLED and it looks INCREDIBLE! I want a open world version of this game!
The Gunk was way too short imo. I was ready to visit another planet or to get more tools, then BAM and the credits rolled and it was all over.

@@riceeater79 Mass effect legendary edition ahm ahm
@@riceeater79 dumbass comment. I've been playing Yakuza Like a Dragon for 70 hours and it still doesn't end lmao
For whatever reason, this game looks a lot more appealing to me than Kena did. Love the ultra minimal UI.
Surely could've picked a more graphically demanding and impressive game to do this
I am mostly impressed that this is 60fps on series s.
I play on Xbox One X and it's 60fps (on the Cloud)
@@ΔΞΘ Cloud games don't really count, since they're not actually rendered by the console itself.
Is the series s' performance in this game more indicative of what it's capable/future or is it more of bad optimization from developers?
This is still a cross-gen game. The hardware isn't being fully taken advantage of. The Series S doesn't really have the benefit of brute-forcing any performance issues.
Judging by how much better the Series S does in games that seem considerably more taxing than this - I’d say that this game is an outlier.

I know the job of this Chanel is the analysis of the technical sides of Games and Consoles. But thank god I’m not into this detailed pixel or resolution piping. But it’s interesting to see Videos like this.
Thanks for the video Oliver. A look at a ‘lesser’ hyped and smaller titles lets us know how smaller devs are handling UE4 on the new systems.
Image & Form said they wanted to go with the stronger hardware to make this game, so they chose to not make a PS5 version. Yet somehow they got it to run on Series S? Hope that game pass money was worth it.
Played it on the pc and i really enjoyed it!
Was fun little game only 4.5 hours to finish with exploration. I do agree with whats said in the video
Cleaning has never felt so good!
The main character looks hilariously bad.
I hear alot of reviews panning this game. Sure it's not AAA game and that's ok. I really liked this game and I hope it get a sequel.
Methinks that Oliver's produced as many vids as Audi has since he joined like yesterday. LMAO.
Recently got an OLED tv and man the benefits of it really shine here with The Gunk. It's a fun puzzle platformer that doesn't overstay its welcome with a bunch of busy work.
great work oliver
I enjoyed the game very much.
Was loving this game, to the point it being in the running for my favourite game of the year...right up until the shoddy ending, that was just hastily scribbled drawings. such a disappointment after it being so strong visually until that point.
Played this for maybe 90 mins. Kinda boring, looks decent tho
Where is the evaluation of the new Hellblade 2 footage?
