    Sennelier is one of my favorite brands! I have taken the colour-cakes out of the box and put them in half pans. Being made with honey, they can be easily pushed inside. I removed the flimsy plastic and attached the pans to the box with some Elmers rubber cement which can be torn out later. Once the white plastic is gone, there is room for a very tiny brush, a sponge, an IKEA pencil stub and half an old credit card. I agree that the colur palette is somewhat off, but once the plastic is gone it is posible to push in two, or maybe three (?) other half pans, and still have room for some basic stuff. Thanks for a good review!

    Ah that set, probably my only set bought. I really enjoyed it, especially the yellow. Wish they had a cool red instead of 2 greens

  • @InLiquidColor

    This set was my first with Sennelier and I almost swore off the entire brand, lol. The box as you said is really poorly designed, and for me, the experience with the colors was lacking too. I think its a huge mistake to opt for two mixed greens when a cool red isn't even provided, and I'm not a fan of their earth tones in general so I'm not sure if including one is a good idea in this first impressions set ;) I do think environment played into a lot of user experience here as my pans were harder to rewet, and yours looked so much more pleasant. I did come around to them once I got my hands on some of their jewel tones, I just don't think this was the best selection of colors for a starter set. Despite all that, you did a great job with them!

      Considering the price, I assume the 6 colors selected were among the least expensive to product.

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 3 года назад +6

      @@amyx231 Yes, they are all series 1 and 2 colors, but there are 8 of them, not 6. Considering what a they would cost if you bought them as single half pans, it's still a pretty good deal.

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 3 года назад +1

      Yes, I agree that it wasn't the best choice to include those two greens. Sennelier has a gorgeous Sennelier Green (PG 36) which is super universal and would have been the perfect choice for such a limited set, leaving a free spot for that badly needed cool red. But you could always take out the brush and use the spot to squeeze in some cool red paint.

    This was the first artist quality watercolour i bought.because of the affordability.it cost 1000rs(14dollars)in India. worth every buck.i scooped them out with palette knife and transferd them into half pans.using them much more nw.the box is definitely a hindrance.thank you for the review.

    I actually really love this set, and disagree with some points! This poor set is terribly misunderstood, I think. The purpose of the transparent part is so that you can lay that down on top of your paper and get one of the most accurate representations of what your color will look like directly on your specific paper. I will concede that if you’re not used to mixing on primarily one single surface (most of the palette builds I do on my channel are in tiny mini altoids palettes so I’m used to working with limited space), then it may seem difficult. BUT you can make your own separated wells by just using a little bit of hot glue.
    As for the color selection? I’ve also continually been surprised at how versatile it is despite the fact that when I originally got it I was sure it wouldn’t suit my style. Now it stays permanently next to my bed so that when I have ideas in the middle of the night I have something reliable to use to scribble something out. And while I don’t use the brush that came with it, it’s probably the best “freebie” brush I’ve seen in a while.

      Meow Meow Kapow - Kat this was REALLY helpful! I left a comment on one of your videos about trying Sennelier in pan form for travel painting, particularly for portraits (for their glazing/layering properties). I think this little set might do the trick for me as I can remove them from the plastic, trash it, add them to pans and then supplement with some cool colors in pans to round this little box out! Excited!! As always I love your insight and ideas! Thanks and no need to respond to my other comment...

    Back on the Web... I've been using this little waterbox for three years and I really like the quality of these pigments that are connected with honey. It makes them very light. This set went on sale for $10 at Christmas from Jerry’s artarama. It is a fantastic deal for artist grade paint. I agree that the tin is kind of lame but I just popped them out- do so before you wet them so they don’t meld into the plastic tray. I was later gifted the 24 set and I added the colors that weren’t present in the large set and ended up with back ups of the vermilion and cinereous blue. This little set is a great value and great in use. Ps there’s also a sampler set of 5 x 10ml tubes for under $15- which would also be a great way to try Sennelier out before committing. Thanks for the video, teo!!

    If you need a travel set I wouldn't recommend filling pans from tubes with sennelier. I do this in the studio with no problems but because the brand have massive variety in which paint actually dries and which stays wet forever you could have a huge mess if you travel with it. For traveling buy their pans. I have some filled pans which haven't dried in three years!
    Of course, if you know your colours you could pick based on what dries but where is the fun in that....

    The colors look lovely! I already have several different colors by Sennelier, however not the ones that are included in this set. So I ordered it a couple of das ago, stil waiting for it, because I figured it is the most cost effective way of adding colors to my collection of Sennelier paints. I don't think that the color choices in this set are the best, l especially do not understand the choice of adding two greens but not having a cool red, so I don't know if I would have opted for this set if this would be all I would have to paint with. But as far as adding colors to an existing watercolor collection goes, I think this set is an amazing deal. I ordered mine for 13 Euros of Amazon, and usually it is sold here for about 18 Euros - a very very good price for these watercolors.

However, this colour combination is not great (as @inliquidcolor said, I miss a cold version of red) plus, I am not so happy when the colours are mixed pigments. I saw a 5 Tube 10ml test set at Jackson's for €14 , which is a fantastic deal (#notsponsored -use Theo's Jackson Link!) So I think I will go for that. I can pour some in half pans and keep the rest for studio painting. Thanks again for taking the time for the review.

    • @teohyc

      The binder and honey they use is in a proportion that makes the paint really difficult to dry. To the paint will stay moist and fluid most of the time, which is not good when used inside a palette box that needs to be brought around. Daniel Smith and Schmincke are good for pouring into pans.

    Teoh, I just love watching you paint! You really are a master, in my opinion, of balancing skill and respecting the loose nature of watercolor. On the roof and windows of the sketch, did you use a masking fluid to get those white lines or was a white pen? I haven't used masking fluid since art school, and since I wasn't a painting major did invest much of my time in experimenting with it.

      Great! Thanks @Teoh Yi Chie and @Pauladawn Owen :D I'll be doing a lot practice and explore the different techniques for watercolor so more paints and a practical box would be more sensible.

      @@MARIAdianeMARIE Pauladawn has a point White Nights lift easily (based on some comments and reviews I've seen) so if you're practicing glazing (wet on dry) you might get frustrated with it. Sennelier glazes beautifully but it does seem weak for single bold strokes. So it depends on your style. Or how much you're willing to adjust to accommodate the medium.

    The Sap looks more like Olive Green. There should have been a cool red instead of grey. The 2 greens you made are quite similar to the ones in the pans. They probably should have used Hookers Green.

    I think this set is great for the price, however I thought it it was disappointing some of the pans were filled so little. my sap green was at least 1/4 less filled then all the others. the plastic piece is also annoying. I wouldn't mind paying a few extra dollars for some plastic pans.

    I bought this set just for refill for my metal case watercolor set. Just make sure to taken them out of that awful plastic casing before you wet them.

    I've always heard that brand is really just for botanicals because they are not very pigmented. But that's not true, is it? Your painting suprised me!!

      I use them for botanical and think they are great for that, (not this particular set though). A real pleasure to use.

      Dan Macapugay and JC Vargas (Instagram users) have used them for portraits and landscapes :)

    Two things you can do: 1) put something white on the outside of the clear window - maybe even spray paint, 2) glue a piece of Yupo paper to the inside of the clear window.

      Traditional watercolors never use white or black. . You use the white of the paper. And darks are mixed using primaries.

      Viridian Green can get so hard that it's difficult to dissolve. That's a paint that's best used from a tube. Phthalo Green would be better option for pan but it's not Viridian of course.
