This lesson was very helpful! It will really help me develop my characters. I read all the Harry Potter books and you sure do see each of the six steps in character development in her books. It is also helping me to minimize the number of characters needed in the story I want to write. Thank you for your help.

Thank you, Joe! I had 0 idea/sense in 1st draft as far as characters were concerned; undecided personalities, too many side characters with one main character, and struggled to keep separate or track keep track of. This really helped understand character development, and already reconsidering to try again with first draft of my first novel 😀 looking forward to the Spring session in February!!

what I find interesting is that almost all of the harry potter characters have an extremely distinct quirk, like diggles wearing purple, dumbledore's moon rimmed spectacles, Hagrid speaking habits. Every character has such an obvious distinct unique sense about them that fits with the unique world of magic. More examples, snapes greasy hair+speaking. Fred and george sharing sentences, percy's horn rimmed glasses.

I don't think the orphan trait is a good one, its just extremely bland and I think a character that has caring parents but also don't want them to worry is a more interesting one. Because if you want a sympathetic character then you need one that people can associate with. Maybe as an example, this character has good caring parents, and he has something going on at work/school that he doesn't want to share with people so they don't worry. with places where they say nothing is happening, which I guess is a lot more relatable in this society where everybody thinks their depressed
