Pantsing (stream of consciousness) writing is very important to me to explore characters and what could work as inciting incidents, and endings, but not sufficient to create a good story that isn’t boring. I’m in awe of those who can.

Totally agree. We need pantsing! But it’s also useful to have some structure in there, even if it’s just in our head.

I often compare your 9 types to the Story Grid external and internal content genres (of which there are 12). They also use Maslow's hierarchy and story values to justify their inclusions. I like how you split Action into two genres (Action and Adventure), but I also appreciate how the Story Grid terms include Society, Status, and Worldview, among others. Any thoughts as to why your list differs from Shawn Coyne's?

Hey Matt. I give Shawn and Story Grid so much credit for helping develop my thinking around plot type and story structure in general. They're doing amazing work, and I recommend every writer check them out. To answer your question though, yes, I have SO many thoughts on why our lists differ, but in short, I don't believe Society or Status are real genres/plot types. Within Story Grid circles (or at least the ones I've been part of), if a writer says their genre is status, it's a big red flag and sign they probably don't have a strong plot, but the examples themselves fit other genres better. For example, Brave New World is called a society story, but it begins as a love story plot then has a coming of age internal plot and adventure subplot. Animal Farm is probably a temptation plot (although you could make a case for Coming of Age) mixed with action. The Awakening is love story (tragic) mixed with coming of age AND temptation. Which is all to say, in my view, the stories they're calling society are really just combinations of other, more useful plot types. Love Story Grid but I disagree with them on this one!

Thank you, Joe Bunting for somewhat explaining and acknowledging the Dark Fiction genres in this vlog!
However, it would be even better if you explained more specifically about the different types of Horror, Crime, and Thriller sub-genres and about how they can overlap.
Because I mostly write Horror, many book and magazine publishers have this tendency to ignore the fact that Horror isn't always about vampires, werewolves, zombies, and witches.
A nice portion of these same book and magazines publishers probably never watched any Slasher Horror movies from the '70 and '80s when Slashers were at their pinnacle.
Most of my stories consist of stalkers, serial killers, scorned, and unhinged men and women, which are scary.

Totally agree! We're tackling the plot types one by one but we'll be doing horror soon. Make sure you're subscribed to get notified when it's live!

@@TheWritePracticeTV I'm already subscribed to this channel. Now, the biggest challenge for many of us other unpublished and published authors happens to be finding anti-"woke" publishers.
Last month, I happened to read an article published on 1 site in particular about authors losing 6-7 figures for publishing books that weren't woke.
In fact, a female author literally lost a book contract from a big time publisher simply because the publisher suddenly changed to pander to the latest politically biased and divisive agendas, when the publisher had always published her books for years.

I think this is too rigid, but i like the idea of defining stories based on dualities
    Life vs hate
    Love vs Death
Love vs fate worse than death
Hate vs fate worse than death
    Hate vs death
    Maturity vs love
Maturity vs fate worse than death (sounds like a hard choice made here)
Wrong vs death ("will you betray your morals to live?")
Some of these sound confusing but would be interesting to explore anyways, and might make for really unique stories and perspectives

I think you'd be surprised at how endlessly flexible and creative these plot types can be. Let's see whether we can convince you by the end of the series!
I like those value scales though, and while it's not exactly how I would frame them, you're not wrong! For example in a love story like Romeo and Juliet, where death is a real stake, it has to be a level on the value scale in some manner. That being said, it's a little more complicated even than that, right? Because, for this example Love IS death and it's really the hate of the two families that causes it!
Anyway, way to much to go into here except to say there's a reason these value scales are set up the way they are and it does work! Our book The Write Structure or future videos will explain further.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

Easy peasy answer typed in here before I watch your video . Three is the magic number that the human race loves, and three times three is magic squared. Yes, magic times magic is magic squared. Tee hee.
