Air Impact Wrench( Ingersoll Rand ) Tool Restoration

- I think this tool ( Ingersoll Rand impacts)didnt use for a long time ago ,fortunately i didnt find any geometric serious damage or broken functunal part in side of system ,it was just littel rusty . of course that's take much time of work but the result was satisfying if im right
I used ruclips.net/user/postUgkx4ynqaujg7rZKFapA8s29kTpRszJGa3-K this for the first time today to replace the front wheel bearing on my rwd 98 dodge dakota. This had absolutely no issue removing or reinstalling the lug nuts and it took off the axle nut without any struggle. Sounds like it's got some muscle to it. Time will tell
I could watch My Mechanics all day with his blasting cabinet, lathe, milling machine, washing machine etc, he’s also an amazing craftsman. However, when I see someone using the tools I have and resurrecting an old lump of sealed up rust like this it makes me smile that little bit more. Subscribed.
thank you Mark. im glad to hear that
I have several old heavy air tools all the way up to one inch. A couple of them have the trigger broken and some are just like that one. I’m looking forward to restoring all of them! Thanks for the inspiration, information and videos!
thank you too..and you welcome
Awesome job you did restoring the air impact wrench. It looks much better and it works like a charm as well. Excellent work.
ir231 best air tools ! best of the best
I have rebuilt hundreds if not a thousand of these impacts. This particular 231 model is the best one. It has standard size parts as it is a true American made impact. The 231 model that came after this is China made and although it is still a quality impact the parts are not transferable. This was a good job. The only thing I would do differently is I would definitely blow all the parts off after washing them to remove any potential sand. Sand is an impact wrench’s worst enemy. Also you can take a 200 grit sandpaper, lay it on a flat surface and sand any potential grooves off of your vanes. However avoid rounding the ends while doing this..Also it is a good idea to lightly grease the hammer mechanism. All and all a good video.
That's a model 231, 1/2" drive. It is an absolute beast. Never met anything it couldn't take apart: It either loosened it or destroyed it.
depending how hard you hands are hh
I have one of these in my tool box for when my CP impact gun isn`t man enough. A friend of mine was trying to strip a worm drive diff and could not remove some of the bolts from the crown wheel. He had been to 2 other shops and they had given up. He could not use heat because it would affect the hardening of the worm gears. I used my ingersoll and it just took them straight out. Awesome !
Used one of these things when I dismantled train cars. Out of a whole arsenal of impacts this was always the one I pulled off the rack and it never failed me after a drop of oil.
Best impact ever built
I have one at work, it isnt the most powerful ive used, and i hate how it blows out thru the front not the handle
When i understand that you gonna paint it, i said to myself, "This should be great in red and black"!
Nice job!
im glad to here that at last...thank you
I'm still using one just like that, bought it back some 25+ years ago still the strongest in the shop. Still looks new, I don't loan my stuff out, kind of a jerk LOL!
i use to loan my tools ...just a loss ...
i had an IR impact like that.. it was crazy strong.. at one shop we had 1/2" air hoses... high flow connections.. and 175 PSI of air.. one of the other techs.. had a CP that failed just as i was going to lunch.. he ask to borrow my impact.. i said let me show you how it works.. he was insulted.. i know how to use an air impact.. when i got back from lunch. he threw it at me... that thing is defective.. it just broke 17 studs on that Cadillac on the rack.. he had already complained to the service manager and the general manager.. i got called into the office. the blinds were closed and the door closed... then we all broke out in laughter.. i never ask why he did not stop at just one broken stud.. he must have held the trigger on for 15 seconds each to bust them..
that was realy an embarrassing situation ..this guy will never use impact guns again
@@InsideWorkshop he bought something off the cornwell truck late that afternoon.. i can't type that out without smiling.. i left that impact in my bosses rollaway.. as he was always borrowing it and i rarely did brakes at his shop.. one of the other techs vanished .. took it and a bunch of tools and went home to central america.. i hope its busting nuts off for that guy now..
who know ..someday he will see this video with a possibility of reading this..im not sure if he will say somethingor not , but i hope so :)
I just rebuilt mine after about 30 years of use..great impact.
good luck with other 30 years
I have the same one. I’ve had it since 2000. Still just as strong as it ever was.
good luck with other 20 years of using
I bet it's eardrum piercingly loud as well. Lol
Great job. Ive never seen an air connection like that
I have had the same impact, an IR 220, for 20+ years now. It's an animal, far more effective on the big stuff than my Milwaukee battery electric that everyone else raved about. I never let mine get that bad though, it's still pretty nice.
yeh ...its one of the super tools
Great job! No fancy tools or chemicals.
yeh ! that's make you working hard...thank you
IR used to be built locally here and a friend of mines mother worked there in management. I asked he to see about rebuilding some old impacts I had and 2 days later she brought me back brand new 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, and 1” impacts because she said they weren’t worth rebuilding to them. I was cool with it.
lucky with that
Сразу видно нашего человека, хб перчатки, болгарка и сварка в любой непонятной ситуации )))
Will have to look out for one of these twin hammer A.R. impact wrenches, good piece of kit
Very nice!! The cool thing is that the rebuild kits for older IR and CP impact guns are still available.
thank you
@Tim Noneyabusiness, any authorized service center or online. All you need is the model and serial #.
No comparison between CP & IR. IR wins hands down.
howbdo i find model number if the tags all beat up? thanks
@@transdimensionalist if you don't have the model or serial number, you may be able to find the info by pic. Go to the website and look up repair/rebuild kits. You just may see a pic of your model.
There were more Stadia ads in this video than I cared to count; I typically stop at 4 but I know there was more than 5. That's just ridiculous youtube...kinda' pissed about that. Anyway, since i'm already here bit**ing about youtube's BS I might as well say that I throughly did enjoy the video. I actually have a very similar if not the same impact I may just take apart and give some much needed TLC...keep up the good work!
sorry about that ..i realy appreciate your frankness here ..thank you any way
Worth a million dollars now, great job!!
thank you
Nah
That slag ball heading for the hills at 2:40 gave me the giggles
Great job! As others have said add some grease to those hammers where they pound on the anvil. Also where use used the oring on the tip of the anvil gets a thin oring and a hardened metal ring to hold the socket on. If you don't find the rings let me know and I'll send you one. I have extras.
..thank you Up Man for your support .. i already took care of that. :)
I had one of these i bought through Mac tools in 2000 . It said mac on it but it was this exact gun . Well balanced and very powerful ! I replaced it with a snap on eventually and what a disappointment . Then I replaced that with a thunder gun which is very powerful !
!
MAC and IR as many tools companies have almost the same shape of this gun but there is some different in details .i think .
I recommend a hand impact driver, it helps me a ton not breaking or stripping out screws
Masterful instruction and cinematography.
i hope you enjoyed it
I’ve got one of these that was laying on the floor in my old shop when it burned down over ten years ago, It laid there covered in debris until recently when we started digging it all out. It almost makes this one look pristine! However, I clamped the anvil in my vice and was still able to turn it. But I would imagine just the cost of replacing the badly rusted anvil, and a rebuild kit would be more than it’s worth.
Depend how much satisfaction you will have when you rebuild this gun 😉
Marvellous Restoration
Nice job👍 What are the chemicals you use?
Gasoline.. thank you
You have a good memory my friend
I’ve got the same gun. I rebuilt it a year ago and it leaks a little air around the trigger not sure what I did wrong but it works very well somebody said on here that it took two hands to hold it. I’m 61 years old and I can hardly hold it with two hands. Lol.
may be you have change the spring with a more resistant one , a new o-ring , smooth and clean contact surface ( 12:35 )
Delirium tremens 🖕
@@snakecold6755 Я бы тебя послал, но вижу ты там уже...
Это искусственное старение. Постановка.
i have that kind of impact ,my problem is ders an air leak on the upper 2 holes above the trigger..whats wrong with that?tanx
I didn't hear any scratch, you must have a really good impact wrench!
When it was new it was advertised to have 650 ft pounds of torque in reverse 😄😄
I never bought one, but, they were quite torquey................and LOUD. I used a CP734. The power seemed more controllable and it was more comfortable in the hand.
When I bought mine new it seemed to have more than 650 worked in an electric motor shop and it regularly pulled 1inch bolts and Pulleys off it’s lost a little but I’ve had it 15 years or better and never have rebuilt it just greased it every 5 years or so
Great job!! Definitely subbing. You have a lot of good videos here. Keep up the great work
thans man ..This is a motivating thing
Great work, not seen on video, but vanes and cylindare was good?
thank you ..
Also, is red and black the only 2 colors any RUclips restoration video is allowed to paint with?
Wow I feel old that is the same impact I use
Same... 1988
Nice refurbishing project. Now it will be very hard to keep it that way. Such tools seem to ask for scratches and such when using them. But Thumbs Up!
yes ...even that and fortunatoly good tools still working for a long time
Nice work. Wish I had this when my impact got left outside.
there is always a big chance to have other one ..
Don’t forget to load grease it for the back palm grease port location in the back flat. The grease will help it last longer, all most a life time it done once a week for heavy use, monthly for lite use. Your welcome lol. Thanks for sharing.
of course i will ..thanks
THAT'S A UGGA DUGGA!? ,
best recommendations ever,
impact wrench gang, no time to torque these wheels, lol
Yes my friend 👍...
Que solución usas para quitar el oxidado de los metales amigo
Use WD40 en la erramienta y talle con Lana de acero ultra fina “0000” no agua. Solo secar con papel.
Should have applied IR 170 grease to the anvil assembly
How did you get the ball bearing assemblies out of the housing plates?
Careful wearing gloves with that wire wheel! I learned my lesson when it snagged mine and almost broke my finger!
you are right ..ones i was close to have bad day may be bad hands ...thank you me friend
Best of the original!
Thank you .
Where the hammers are requires grease not oil. Won’t get much use out of it. You can get an overhaul kit for this. I have the same style impact.
sure i will...thank you
yes they do use grease in the hammers and bearings. wheel bearing grease works great and the bearings and rotor blades almost last forever so no need for a rebuild kit 99% of the time,.
I have the same one. It was my dads and he had it for ever
heritage tool
I had exact same one for many years, had bought it used for $25. Had to replace it for a light weight gun.
more heavier more stronger
heavy impact gun, you will get a arm like popeye the sailor man.
i have to use then both hands alternately
to get tow arms like him
Don't pick up a 1" if you think any 1/2 is heavy.
I've got one just like that. I bought it used for $20 about 40 years ago. I wouldn't bother to restore it, though. My Harbor Freight Earthquake is three times the wrench.
its a whole age
wonderful video, where did you find the O ring that went on the anvil? I'm looking for one or my Impact wrench. 8/18/2020
Just measure your anvil ant you will find right one in ball bearings shop (they have o-rings and metal rings). It can be that you need metal flat ring to put socket on it then just put regular sring ring on it ant hold sand paper on it, and turn wrench on. You will get flat ring...
Good job Máster..!🎉
Not hating on your work, but it would be very helpful if you provided a list or subtitle of products used to restore this particular tool.
good idea ..thanking you
Crisco & a rattle can. Nothing was actually restored.
Fix it and make it better! Nice job.
IR sells rebuild kits for these impacts. I have rebuilt one at least 7 times. I have maybe 30 of them. lol I found that aluminum wheel cleaner will take all of that powder off.You have to put Moly grease in that barrel . Not oil. Oil will not handle the pounding of the hammers.
Invest in a set of Allen wrenches and don't use Torx on then and you will not strip out the bolts, and have to cut them or weld to them. And a complete rebuild kit is available on eBay for less then $20.00.
did you take in count the thread angle and pitch of bolts ..some kind of machines doesnt have the regular one ...
perfect for folks with nothing better to do.
Nice work!
¿Qué líquido usas para remover el óxido?
Nice job. Poor thing looked like it had been buried in the back yard.
All that work to reuse the old seals? The rebuild kits are very cheap should have replaced them while you where inside. Great work non the less.
thanks
Excelente reparación
thank you
how'd i know you were going to put body filler on it.. cool if you never actually use it, but the first time you set it on the ground it's gonna chip off. Same with the paint on the housing but that's because it is aluminum and shouldnt be painted anyway
It would be nice if you told us what solvents your using to clean the parts.
gasoline
Some decent emery cloth would make life much easier!!!!!!
nice restoration bro..keep it up..and enjoy.
Appreciate that man ..thank you .
wouldn't this be refurbished because restoring an item is retuning it to like new they were not red when they were new serious question because i see alot of people doing the same thing
kind of imprint 😉
Advice for a stubborn bolt or screw, use a brass punch before trying to unscrew and never strip a head again👍🏻
i couldnt have the risk of damage the aluminum thread or body ..thank you man👍👍
Those Ingersoll-Rand rattle guns are absolutely bullet-proof specially the ones with a metal case like you’ve got there....
If you go on eBay you can buy service kits for them and they come in a little packet with all the paper gaskets roller bearings various O-rings and rubber gaskets the six composite air veins a little tube of Ingersoll-Rand grease
I know that you’ve cleaned everything up which is cool and put it back which is fine but you can buy a service kit
The new model guns have a plastic case which is lighter but on the other hand it’s a bit of a shame too.....
Good job sounds spot on made to last
thank you
Air tools are now in the past it's all battery operated now... But nice project. I enjoyed it
I still use air tools everyday as a professional mechanic, so does everyone I work with. Simple, no batteries to worry about, reliable, and a good air impact gun still has more power than the best electric ones you can get right now.
@@SGcomputing Same, I know battery powered stuff is getting better as the technology improves. It's really hard to compete with a good air impact. Never have to worry about a battery being charged.
Air hammers have yet to be replaced. Living in the salt belt I hear them daily in the shop. Nobody makes a battery that can handle grinding all day either. My job has us all using IR built air impacts and air grinders. We’d run so many batteries flat running truck lugs off plus they’d walk off sooner or later. Cordless stuff is all Chinese built and the same quality in my experience with shop shared impact drivers and screwguns. Not to mention once the batteries are obsolete the tool is garbage.
Highly impressed! Great job!
thank you
What type of Grease did you use on that rebuild
The little ball fitting on the back of the gun is where you grease it, pump it full.
i see thank youuu 😉
Exact opposite of situation I encountered. It looked fine from the outside but the bearings were rusted solid. The inside of yours looks fresh and the bearings looked pristine. I see it operates but did you do anything to evaluate its torque capability?
wheel bolts test
@@InsideWorkshop Do you expect to use it?An inexpensive ($15 or so) impact produces 200 ft lbs. Lug nuts require about 95 ft lbs. Any idea of what make it is and its original rating? I'd be interested in knowing whether it delivers anywhere near its original power.
@@65csx83 Since you are interested I retried other test , this time with a torque wrench witch gaves a 400 ft lbs as an exact evaluation
What sorcery is that air line connector
😊
Well done! looks great
thank you
Wow! Love it! Great job!!
What did you use to fill the imperfections?
What chemicals did you use?
Great job
thanks
Great job, well done.
thank you
Excelente oportunidad de aprender de su conocimiento

god bless why did you paint the aluminum that had as little dusting metal on those as possible and as little paint in those as possible they where quite literally dropped from lifts if there was a lazy mechanic on duty
What type of gear grease did you use? Thanks
Looked like Vaseiline. HA.
You should off changed the bearings while you stripped it down they could fail soon mate
its not a high speed tool.. those bearings will last for a literal eternity with some grease.
Wash them real good with brake wash and blow them off with an air gun and they will roar after greasing
Worth the effort- nice job!!
What model is that? Looks like the same one I have but I can't locate the model #. I need a rebuild kit for it.
Ingersoll Rand 231 Model A
Nice restoration.
thank you
I missed the part where you took the motor out I am stuck on that.
i woulda left the housing bare and finished it to a high polish. make that puppy bling.
Nice job on it cool video
thanks man
How do you assume that any parts inside was not broken. It's impossible to get new ones.
always there is a way to get spare parts... welcolme to the w w web.
I've got the same one great tool
lucky you are
Awesome is it a IH because it has the old IH style emblem with the H in the I
good !!! it s the old emblem but without H ..it s R actualy
Ok gotcha but still they don’t build those air wrenches like they used to do you’ll get a hell of a lot of work from it
@@farminginthe5706 Like many factories, they no longer produce the same quality as before
Inside Workshop yea that’s why I love working on older equipment and tools because they are tougher then the ones built today
@@farminginthe5706Today we only have comfortable lightweight equipment that is fairly effective, has a short life and is not easy to repair, especially that contains electronic component.

Great job.. but the red paint ruined it for me
what color should i use ? usually i confused in choosing colors
