Many people use leitmotifs. It's basically so that your brain recognizes the leitmotif (even if you don't notice it) and remembers a certain thing. That's why the Undertale OST is so powerful. And Requiem For A Dream's soundtrack does that too. Both awesome OST's.
Coming back after deltarune, it’s easy to see why Toby’s such a genius. This isn’t laziness, a leitmotif is used to creat a feeling of familiarity, it lets you subconsciously associate parts with familiarity and ***determination***, and it creates the feeling that undertale gives off. Toby’s mastered the art of the leitmotif, and that’s why he’s hailed as such a genius.
It’s makes sense that asgore’s theme has hints of heartache and determination because A. He was married to toriel and that’s he’s also a boss monster B. He’s the voice that talks to you when you die

My favorite thing ever is how the Game Over music is used by Asgore’s theme. It’s not only a plot twist when we learn that the voice we hear on the Game Over screen is Asgore’s but it’s also so badass that the “final boss” is using the game over music, like “yeah, you’re gonna die now”
i didn’t know it was asgore’s voice!!! does that imply that every time you die in a timeline, there’s an world where asgore takes your soul and breaks the barrier? at least when you die before he does ...

- “Ruins” is in almost every area theme because it ties the Underground together - It’s Undyne’s main battle motif because she protects the Underground - It doesn’t play in Hotland/CORE cause Undyne can’t go there without overheating
A while ago I came to the realisation that related characters/places often had the same leitmotifs in their songs. The funny thing was that I was always like "Why don't Asgore and Toriel have the same/similar leitmotifs?" They totally do, but I never realised it. :>

Yeah I always liked how Undyne is kind of a dick in the pacifist/neutral routes but in the genocide route she turns into "A True Hero" and comes into her full potential against the ultimate evil only to die. The lietmotifs also lend credence to the whole, "Megalovania is the player's theme, not Sans's theme" because obviously Sans's battle theme would have the Sans lietmotif in it, like "Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans" does.

I like how the hopes leitmotif is spread across the entire game, so when you hear it in hopes and dreams and reunited it’s reminiscent of your entire journey.
It just occurred to me that the ruins leitmotif represents the monsters as a whole. Undyne fights for the people of the ruins so her themes reflect that and with don't give up that's all of the underground supporting Frisk 🥺
Why does no one appreciate the Uwa!! Soundtracks? Its so simple to oversee all of them and they're nowhere else in the game. They're completely awesome

can we just take a moment to appreciate the genius of how "his theme" is just sort of sprinkled into moments you feel are important but don't understand how (the statue, the empty home), only to give you the full, actual score when you learn Asriel's story, hitting you right where it hurts and making you cry? The way it's used makes you feel like at some level you already know this story, you knew this kid, even though this is the first time you hear it, because you already know his theme. Plus the fact that Asriel's story is the last missing puzzle piece you needed to make sense of why everyone you've met act the way they do. his death affected all of them on some level, and in turn, that's affected how they've treated you during your adventure and-.... I've gone off track. point is: this game had no reason to be this good but it was and still is and I can't stop thinking about it.

Bro the way I didn’t even realize half of these were leitmotifs but they were like my favourite parts of the songs 😭 This isn’t just reusing the same song over and over, this is masterfully weaving it into other songs in ways that are hardly recognizable but still familiar enough to make an impact. Because I've been more into Homestuck lately, I haven't been active in the Undertale fandom for a LOOOONG while, and coming back to listen to some Undertale music just makes me wanna cry tears of joy. Wow.
3 observations: 1- I never realised that The Choice is literally the undertale track slowed down 2- I guess the ruins is more the theme for monsters, or the underground as a whole, since it's used by Undyne as the true hero. 3- You got the battle the wrong way around, it's the battle which borrowed it from the dogs ;)
I like to think of the ruins one as a sort of Mt. Ebott/monster race theme since it only appears in larger overworld areas and moments that have significance to all monsters.
Undertale is a perfect example of how to cleverly use your limits to your advantage. It was mostly made by one man and it would be way too time consuming to make every single song completely original. So he used leitmotifs both as a shortcut and to connect songs to each other in a beautiful and emotional way
this video is SO eye opening. i was aware of all the similarities between certain tracks but this really helped me notice some of the obvious leitmotifs in songs i just thought of as their own identities.
20:17 'Oh my...' is just the very beginning of Shakira's song 'Whenever, wherever' Either funny accident or obscure reference, parts of the lyrics do add on mettaton's character and him beginning to be a popstar. That Shakira song was her global breakthrough after all.

I KNEW I WASN'T CRAZY! When I was younger, I knew about the smaller fights like the basic battle theme and dog theme having a shared leitmotif, and was CONVINCED Heartache and ASGORE had one too. I tried playing them at the same time to see if they complimented each other, but obviously it didn't work. Thank you for proving 14 y/o me right.

I think it's genious to have many leitmotifs in adventure games, because it adds a sense of familiarity, so it makes the journey more emotional.
You forgot to mention for the sans leitmotif, that “the song that might play when you fight sans” is also apart of that leitmotif. It’s so mind blowing that the song was actually created off of sans overworld theme!
Papyrus's, too. I think it was left out because while "the song that might play when you fight sans" is on the OST, it's not in the game. Though tbh it would have been funny to put it in here with a screenshot of sans's fight.

3 observations:
1- I never realised that The Choice is literally the undertale track slowed down
2- I guess the ruins is more the theme for monsters, or the underground as a whole, since it's used by Undyne as the true hero.
3- You got the battle the wrong way around, it's the battle which borrowed it from the dogs ;)
It's kind of weird that ruins starts in the...ruins, but then is way more heavily used in waterfall and with undyne specifically.
I feel like its the theme for the underground.
I like to think of the ruins one as a sort of Mt. Ebott/monster race theme since it only appears in larger overworld areas and moments that have significance to all monsters.

Undertale is a perfect example of how to cleverly use your limits to your advantage. It was mostly made by one man and it would be way too time consuming to make every single song completely original. So he used leitmotifs both as a shortcut and to connect songs to each other in a beautiful and emotional way

I KNEW I WASN'T CRAZY! When I was younger, I knew about the smaller fights like the basic battle theme and dog theme having a shared leitmotif, and was CONVINCED Heartache and ASGORE had one too. I tried playing them at the same time to see if they complimented each other, but obviously it didn't work. Thank you for proving 14 y/o me right.
