Located in northern Tuscany, Pisa stands on a vast plain near the coast crossed by the Arno River. Precisely this flat area is what remains of the ancient "Sinus Pisanus", a gulf largely occupied by a large brackish lagoon that extended up to the current Livorno.
The fortunate geographical position, at the mouth of a navigable river and close to the sea, meant that as early as the sixth century BC. , therefore in the Etruscan era, the center held a certain importance in commercial terms, as also indicated by the toponym "Pisa" in all probability of Etruscan origin and whose meaning refers to the concept of "mouth". Passed in the following centuries from Roman to Longobard domination, starting from the 11th century the city lived together with Venice, Amalfi and Genoa the epic of the Maritime Republics. The dynamism and great commercial initiative projected Pisa into the role of hegemonic maritime power in the western sector of the Mediterranean, coming to count among its possessions Corsica, part of Sardinia and the Balearic Islands, as well as various commercial colonies in southern Spain, in the North -Africa and even in Asia Minor. Just between the 11th and 12th centuries the Cathedral and the Tower were built, symbols of the city and today a UNESCO heritage site.
After the defeat suffered in the war against Genoa in 1284, a slow decline began for Pisa which ended with the conquest of the city by Florence at the dawn of the fifteenth century.
Under the lordship of the Medici family, Pisa experienced a moment of cultural and economic rebirth with the reclamation of the surrounding marshes and the construction of important urban works including the Ponte di Mezzo, the buildings overlooking the Piazza dei Cavalieri, the Logge dei Banchi, the Lungarni as well as the Royal Palace.
Throughout its history Pisa has given birth to several important figures, above all the mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci and Galileo Galilei, and is now home to some of the most prestigious universities in the world such as the Normale, the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and the same University of Pisa.
The city also hosts the largest headquarters in Italy of the CNR (National Research Council) and numerous other scientific research institutes.
