THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE - train vs. plane, Glasgow to London, Virgin v BA / FLYSGSKAM flight shame

- What's quicker - train or plane? It depends on the type of train and the distance to be covered. The distance from Glasgow to London is 345 miles/555km, and this ultimate challenge will see me race myself from George Square, Glasgow, to Trafalgar Square, London. Team Red will use Virgin West Coast and Team Blue will use British Airways. Also used will be the Heathrow Express and the London Underground. Since filming this, the terms FLYSGSKAM and 'flight shame' have been used in the media. This video proves what had been known for some time.

The flight option would have taken somewhat longer if you had hold baggage, like a large suitcase, but would have made no difference to your train journey duration. Comparing costs I would probably opt for the train.
The last two times I’ve been to Glasgow I went by train, it’s nice looking out the window at the scenery, plus it reminds me of my childhood visits to Dumbarton on a steam train, main years ago, I missed the train once I started driving there.
This was a brilliant idea. I go to London for theatre and flew down for years until BA priced themselves skyward. I then started using the train and realised the difference is usually under an hour. Don’t forget, also, that if a train is over an hour late, you get a fare refund.
The train is always cheaper and less stressful as well.
Again, well done.
Not only really informative, but also entertaining too. Those silent looks when on the Underground from Euston... he doesn't need to say what he's thinking. Brilliant. Priceless.
Regardless of the time, the train is a much nicer experience.
Damned right: it's not the flying experience it's the airport one.
What about cost? Sometimes train travel is horrendously expensive
Why didn't team blue wait at Trafalgar Square for Team Red to get there?
GREAT VIDEO..THANKS..ENJOYED
You should try this again. The Avanti does a service which only stops 7 times before Euston.
You are a star! I love watching your videos. First I saw those from my country - Poland and now from the UK that I visited in July this year and absolutely loved it. It was a 12-day tour by coach (directly from Poland, to the Channel border, and by ferry to Dover). I saw a few places in England, Scotland and Wales. The little towns and big cities. I odored the terraced houses (old and new style) and the bay windows, lots of flowers, river boats houses, cliffs, greenery, fish and chips, different accents, students in school uniforms, and ... the clouds which are completely different from the ones I have here. And the palm trees! Your country has it all.✈Next time I'll go on my own and concentrate on the coastline from North Cornwall to Seven Sisters cliffs.
Awesome vid for me because i used to love trains but now i love planes so it was very interesting
Thanks for your kind reply. I work in the travel industry, and at the time Virgin Trains operated that route. I once met our Virgin Trains sales manager and asked her how long would that journey take, and who would win in a race. She was really impressed someone had actually tried it.
Thank you for having the substitute train using Virgin trains. I used that and enjoyed my trip back to London. Prompt and clean.
Fantastic aerial footage
Glad I'm encouraging you to make more of these excellent videos ......😂😂😂😊
Brilliant video. With the latest price hikes by BA, still highly relevant.
Fascinating via easyJet here in Inverness it's a no brainer the plane is way faster than the train and way cheaper as well. 4hrs from my house near the airport to the centre of London via Gatwick and the Gatwick-London Bridge train.
the sq is an eye sore - im bout to do this experience next month, trying the sleeper for the 1st time - hope ive pick the right date to go - for a quiet journey
What a fascinating concept Scott, having a race against yourself on different modes of transport between two predetermined start
and finish points. That train cancellation at the start was a bummer. But, hey, it could have been a plane cancellation that happened.
I'd like to see more events like this. I agree with your wrap that the train journey being cheaper, and scenically more interesting, was
the winner over all, despite getting the silver medal this time.
Indeed. Planes don't offer such a frequent service as trains. The next flight may have been 2 hours plus later. Also, maybe he should have picked the fastest train from Glasgow to Euston which takes about 4 1/2 hours, to level the playing field a bit. May have cost more, but it was a speed challenge, not a value for money challenge.
@@davidspear9790 I think Planes Trains Everything picked the one closest to the flight departure time. There are usually a few even slower trains via Coventry . These are slower than the usual Trent Valley line services as they have standing time at BHM
I travel to London several times a year, usually by train. The best way to beat the plane is to use the sleeper from Glasgow to Euston. New rolling stock has just been introduced and it's brilliant. I paid £150 for a single cabin with ensuite shower/toilet. Price includes breakfast either in cabin or lounge. A cheaper option is a reclining seat with lockable storage for £45. Well worth a try
Robert Goodman But plane a lot cheaper..
You probably pay more for a sleeper compared with a flight, but let's face it, what would be more relaxing and more fun? The Caledonian Sleeper is on my 'to do' list - maybe later this year.
Surely the train was free though? You'd have got 100% back through delay repay. So only the cost of the bus, HEX and tube. And the HEX is really quite reasonable if you buy well in advance.
Would love to see one of these challenges where it doesn't start from the centre of the city, what would be quicker from say Motherwell leaving to get to London for 9.30am ?
Love your video Scott 👍👍
Awesome video - we could do a colab travel challenge race sometime if you're interested.
Great idea! Would definitely watch!
Great fun and very interesting. Pity the train was cancelled. I appreciate the effort you put into making this video. :)
not sure if you guys gives a shit but if you are bored like me atm then you can stream pretty much all the new movies on instaflixxer. Been watching with my girlfriend for the last couple of weeks :)
@Emmett Musa Yup, I've been watching on instaflixxer for since november myself :)
I've done both to London before from Glasgow all though the flight for me was just a connection for Madrid.
Very good job! It's been helpful as I was confused if to go by train or flight. Thank you.
Heathrow Express is on,y 10 mins longer than tube so that’s aBout £1.50 per minute saved on the journey. will be even better when Crossrail opens. Hope you claimed delay repay for the train.
Flying to LCY is my preference for flying into London, especially because my friend there lives close to a DLR station. I try to only use LHR for connecting and even then I’d choose almost any other European hub over it.
Just as a thought, would you have been able to get a flight into London City Airport from Glasgow? Just a short ride on the DLR from there into central London.
Are flights not far more expensive into City due to the lower availability of flights? Certainly it was the case once, not sure about now.
Great idea for videos, useful information, thanks much.
Love it, thank you.
Air ticket prices vary wildly and can be usually obtained cheaper than the train.
It's one reason why I travel to Switzerland by plane...so much cheaper
Loved this! I'm looking to get from London to Iona Abbey later this year. Would love your thoughts on getting from Glasgow to Iona.
Did you enjoy your trip? I would have gone on the sleeper to Oban, ferry to Mull, bus to Iona.
Love this
The earlier train had 9 minutes less journey time so the difference would have been 31 minutes not 40.
'Penny the Pendolino'. There's a years supply of midnight oil used up.
The wing on the airplane could do with a lick of paint.
I've only just got around to properly watch this. One thing that struck me though is that many people will be doing this journey with luggage. You seem not to have taken into account that, in these cases , the air passenger would have the disadvantage of waiting around for the plane to be unloaded. Not sure how long that takes at Heathrow, but I've waited an hour at Manchester.
Good one, uk looks like is in a different planet, which has no sun
I'd choose the Train
I see you got one of the special "dove" painted BA birds from the 2012 Olympics.
2 hours check in for a domestic flight!
All I would say now is that done today, Team Red would win. Way too many delays at airports and Heathrow is one of the worst affected
Train has same oxygen level as normal , pressurised plane will have less oxygen and you will feel tired . Once went on four trains from st pancreas station to southern Germany and despite some non train problems, arrived awake and ready to explore where as flying never the same plus getting to and from airport more stressful
Rather you than me...I think I'd prefer the train still. I used to come and see my girlfriend, who was in Glasgow in 2004-ish, while I was working in London. Seem to remember many hours of boredom however...and quite often delays.
'FLYGSKAM' if you're looking for the Swedish ;-)
The only potential bias is that presumably you had to do the two routes on different days where travel conditions could differ - but it's an interesting idea
Hour and a half is too much. I normally turn up to the airport an hour before domestic flights, sometimes less. enver had an issue. (my record is 10min before in Derry, but thats a tiny airport haha)
Even if it were 2 hours slower t'd still be train station and train every time over airport and flight.
Who put that cone up there
It was on the man riding the 🐎
You must have done this on different days - aeroplane first?
I looked at the possibility of doing both on the one day, but it just wasn't possible (I was paranoid about delays etc.), so the flight portion was done first. If it hadn't been for the one hour Virgin trains delay, and the BA flight arriving 15 minutes early, it would have been very close indeed. I mentioned this to a Virgin trains sales manager, and she was pleased someone had actually proven the viability of rail over air.
Wtf I thought they were twins
@@PlanesTrainsEverything This is the advantage planes have over trains. Once they are in the air, there's virtually nothing that can slow them down, except maybe a short diversion around a bit of bad weather.
Unless the plane crashed in the Lake District that life vest won't be much use
How did you do that.
Are there any flights GLA to London City would that make a difference ?
Such a shame that Virgin Trains ceased operations shortly after that video
There is nothing glamours in flying.
Oh, glamour can be had, but it will cost you...
I think with a 40 minute difference i would always take the train, much mkre civilised
I dislike flying anyway, not to mention the airport fart-around when you just want to get going. Have to turn up hours early, join some epic queue to get felt up by some rude twat in a cheap suit and generally treated like a criminal, told what I can and cannot bring, then sit in an overpriced shopping mall until you're told the flight is cancelled or delayed because why not.
Train is more civilised by a long shot. Haven't been on a plane since February 2014 and would be perfectly happy to never do so again.
Give me the train anytime, much more civilised. Bit of a crazy situation that flying this route is often cheaper than by rail.
Hmmmmm. Well trains are cheaper for me. But some people would disagree
I'm in Northumberland and there was a time when I would fly down to London but I can get a train now that gets me in to Kings Cross in 3.5 hours without the hassle of airport security, I would say as well that the last 3 flights I have taken were all delayed by nearly 2 hours, thanks Easyjet.
must have been a nightmare to film
That wing looks a wee bit tatty l😂
Never seen a wing with brown stains on it!
Air travel is dystopian now.
Unless it's transcontinental, I'll take the train any time :)
OK. How much did the train cost vs plane! Plane is easily far cheaper, never mind you didn't try Easyjet/ Ryanair and when can you rely on the train not being on strike/engineering works, cancelled at Christmas. cancelled at New Year, cancelled at Easter, cancelled at bank holidays, leaves/trees on line, wrong kind of snow, or hooligans/smelly/annoying folk on train? Train is ok if you are guaranteed a seat and genuinely timing city centre to city centre (how many are doing that) and your boss picks up the tab.
Yes agree would love to see the prices he pays on this and would be good for all his other videos
You must be like the Lordships and other royals the only guy on that plane without any purpose
If only you had a twin brother...
👍👍👍
Really. Why did it take 18 minutes to walk and wait for the airport bus. It picks you up in george square exactly where he started.
Team Blue British Airways will win!
If this was New York City to Washington DC or Boston, the plane would win way too easy because in the US, trains suck
Red for train
You guys PAY to go from GG to LD? My family takes the car,All the petrol is cheaper than a plane ticket!
I am so confused did you do each of the transports on different days
It was cheaper to do two separate trips to London than try and do both the rail and the air on the same day.
no he cut himself in half as you can see in the video.
You need try this again after High Speed 2 is up and running!
Mate that won't be ready until 2025 !!
@@SuperOpticJ That's optimistic
@@SuperOpticJ ...proposed opening is 2033... and only goes to Birmingham...
Hopefully HS2 will kill off flights on this route
HS2 only goes to Birmingham...
@@jimihendrix991 Not when I wrote that comment. Also the cancellation is almost certainly temporary.
All the coughing back then already with no care at all.
