It seems to be common sense to look at any treated parts before reassembly. Globs, overpaint, etc. should be visible on a simple inspection. What am I missing?
What you are missing is many folks overlook these basic items.

It can if chamber is not honed and polished, but generally this will be the cause of the extractor.
