These grow all year down here in FL zone 9b. They really take off in spring and fall though. My dad taught me how to plant these and collect their seeds when I was a little girl. They’re the easiest flowers on earth to grow. You’re right about them being forgiving. They’re very tough! I spent all yesterday morning transplanting the seedlings into their own containers. I use them as a border around my patios to deter pests (along with rosemary) and also plant them in with my tomatoes and certain veggies to help protect them also. 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼

I had one marigold I thought I had lost and was going to put something else in the pot but when I looked at it it was covered with dozens of self seeded seedlings. I carefully washed the seedlings to separate without too much damage to the roots. I planted several together and got 6 massive plants in my vege garden, the only one that didn't survive was smothered by the sweet potatoes when they overgrew the position. Later I had some in two small pot which the plants had reach the end of their lives. My harvesting and planting was far less difficult than in this video. I removed the dead heads from the dying plants, rubbed the flowers between my fingers to expose the seeds and dropped the seed bunch on top of the soil damp from recent rain, that's it. Now I have masses of seedlings, which has already given a flower from the first seedling to emerge. It would be hard to not get marigolds endlessly.

I enjoyed this video. I have a bed of Durango mix marigolds from a nursery. They have been beautiful as well as prolific. Over the season I have dead headed regularly and just tossed them to the ground outside the bed. I’m curious as to whether they will come up in the spring. I will start now actually saving some before frost.
I grow fruits and vegetables, but marigolds are the one flower I grow because they are such a great companion plant! :) They attract the bumble bees. :)
yes, deadheading will help the plant last all season. As the season comes an end, I will start letting a few stay on and dry because there are so many seeds in one marigold flower head. Thanks so much for watching!

I do use a potting soil mix mixed with a little compost but I will tell you that all potting mixes are not the same. There are some potting mixes that have alot of big wood chips in them which I don't care for. Last year we found a local source that had a good mix that we use. Hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for the idea of a garden party!! I learn something new today, collecting the seeds. Last year I didn’t have much luck with marigolds doing direct sowing. The only plant that survived didn’t bloom. This year I am starting the seeds in seedlings soil with good germination. I will be using what I learn today to collect the seeds. Zone 13a
We love entertaining. Yes I love collecting the seeds and planting them year after year. Good luck and thank you so much for watching....wow zone 13a that is amazing

Once I harvest them I keep them in a cool dry place and will plant next season because marigolds last for us up until fall. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
I have planted marigolds plants 2 times and they have died on me , I got them from a flower shop but what I did when I got them I didn’t plant them together I planted them separately did I do wrong by doing that
You don't have to plant them together you can separate them. I don't think you did anything wrong. It could be transplant shock. I hope you have better luck in the future with them because they are an amazing plant to grow. Thanks for watching!
Marigold are edible flowers and they are beautiful in salads. If you are going to eat them I would suggest you grow your own from seed organically or buy them from a source where you know how it was grown. Most commercial garden centers and growers put chemicals on them. Thank you so much for watching!
Hi. I just found your videos...thank you. I have a question. I am pretty new to gardening (this is just my 2nd year). I want to plant marigolds to determine pests. Do I have to put them directly in my raised beds in order for that to work or can they just be nearby. If I plant them in my beds with they keep pests put of that area of the yard or just out of the beds? I think I'm not going to be a very poor gardener because I am TERRIFIED of snakes...even if they are little ones. 😢. I don't mind bugs but snakes scare me. Any ideas?
Let me tell you....I am terrified of snakes but we have them every year. The only year we did not have any is when the neighbors had a cat. You can direct sow them in the ground when the time is right or you can start them in cell trays. I plant them around my garden like as a border to help with the pest because they give off a scent that many pests do not like but I will be honest....I am not sure if they will keep out snakes. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
Yes I think that if you bring them inside it will. I know they don't like the frost but they definitely are a wonderful flower to grow. Thank you so much for watching!
My marigolds get eaten alive by snails and bugs so I don't know about them being a bug repellent. They attract bugs so they stay away from other plants maybe?
They are not planted very deep at all. The seeds resemble a little straw so when we start them in cell trays we stick them in a shallow indention and cover them lightly. I hope this helps.
@@auyannaplants lol I don't think anyone knows this quote from a certain movie lol. So whenever I see Marigolds and/or Peonies I think of the quote from the movie.

Glad you watched the whole video because marigold is definitely a flower that you can grow in your garden each season because the seeds are so easy to save. Thank you so much for watching!
Dang! What am I doing wrong? I've tried growing them from seed - both seeds I've saved, as well as purchased - and had ZERO success! I've also had serious troubles with small seedlings I've purchased getting destroyed by slugs. They seem way more finicky to me.
So sorry to hear that. We just plant them in cell trays and keep them moist until they germinate. Some people even sprinkle them throughout the garden and they pop up nice. I hope you have better luck planting them this season. Thank you so much for watching!
A couple questions for you You pinched off the heads after that had turned brown and closed up. The marigold heads I gathered for seeds were "spent" but I was dead heading the plant to help regenerate growth... would those seeds still b as viable? I had gathered them over and year ago but getting myself organized now for winter. I'm in zone 6b/7a so will be starting seeds probably around Feb-ish... My real question was if I want to start these in my homemade seed starter tubes... how would I place them in soil? Vertically, horizontally or does it matter - does it matter which end is up or down?
I have a container and I just sprinkle them on the soil and cover them lightly and they germinate just fine. They do not have to be in a certain position. Once they are big enough in the container I carefully remove them one by one and place them where I would like them to go. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching.
Sorry ma’am these will grow hey I did this for years but really this is as juvenile as I was for years. The seeds you save will grow but look at them….they never grow the same height the flowers are bleached looking and they are terrible!! Even $1.25 tree has great seeds. You can save fruit but no guarantee they won’t cross pollinate. For anybody here it’s not worth the little seed savings for inconsistent flowers. Still love ur channel though….
We’ve grown them all around our garden since I was a kid to help keep out pests! Also it’s edible flower!! I love this!!!

What soil do you use to pot them in a container? Will any potting mix do? Or does it need a special blend? Thanks! A very informative video
I do use a potting soil mix mixed with a little compost but I will tell you that all potting mixes are not the same. There are some potting mixes that have alot of big wood chips in them which I don't care for. Last year we found a local source that had a good mix that we use. Hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. Gosh, you have perfect nails and hands!
You are so welcome. I always have dirt under my nails so I try to get them as clean as I can before I film. Thank you for watching!
Loved your video, thank you for your wisdom.
Thank you so much for watching. I appreciate your support.
Those are beautiful..would they survive on any island?
Marigolds are frost sensitive but once you save the seeds you can plant them again and again. Thank you so much for watching!
Your welcome
It is in the daisy family. It is edible just like Garland daisy aka Tongho. LOL I grow Tongho for seeds and then microgreens.
Wow that is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing and watching!
Those are beautiful!!!!
Thank you so much and thank you for watching!
Oh my!! I had no idea.. I didnt get any last year because it was like $6 for the one pack of starters.. I bought some seeds last week and praying to the lord they will grow...Thank you so much for sharing this information!! Tell hubby we thank him for his service!!
Yes! I definitely hope you can save some seeds this season. I will definitely tell him. Thank you so much and thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video! How long can I keep the seeds. Do I need to use them all up in same season?
Once I harvest them I keep them in a cool dry place and will plant next season because marigolds last for us up until fall. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
@@auyannaplants yes it does. I am new to gardening, so I am learning. I am loving this. Thankyou very much 😁
Cool thank you for sharing 💗
Thank you so much for watching!
Love my Marigolds
Yes!!! They are a must have in the garden! Thank you so much for watching!
I love the smell of marigolds
They are such a beautiful flower to grow. Thank you so much for watching!
I always plant marigold seeds next to tomato plants helps keep pests away. I think it's the smell of marigolds that pests don't care for.
Yes marigold is a great companion plant for the garden. Thank you so much for watching!
Do you replant right away or wait until the following year, if you plant them now will they get through the winter.
No we save and store them inside and then replant the following year. I hope this helps. Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
Great video, thanks for sharing
Thank you so much and thank you for watching!
This was great. Thanks.
Thank you so much and thank you for watching!
Great video, thanks
Thank you so much and thank you for watching!
Thanks for the information
Thank you so much and thank you for watching!
Beautiful pepper plant! :)
Thank you so much for watching!
I love saving seeds
Yes such a great way to go and the seeds you save are acclimated to your climate. Thank you so much for watching!
Leaves look like celery. Related.
Can you eat. Flowers ?
( no disrespect to flowers )
You heal a lot of us.
Lovely video!🌹✝️🌹
Thank you so much and thank you for watching!
Will a marigold grow yr around if u keep it inside
Yes I think that if you bring them inside it will. I know they don't like the frost but they definitely are a wonderful flower to grow. Thank you so much for watching!
My marigolds get eaten alive by snails and bugs so I don't know about them being a bug repellent. They attract bugs so they stay away from other plants maybe?
normally they have a smell that pests don't like but they are known are a trap crop to keep the pests away from other plants.
So I can take these seeds & they will keep thru the winter.
Yes we keep them in a coin envelope inside in a cool dry place. Once the new season begins we start the seeds. Thank you so much for watching!
From now i wont buy marigolds again. My first time i took the seeds from the flower. Next year i will plant them
Yes! That is the way to do it. Thank you so much for watching.
Awesome!
Thank you and thankyou for watching!
AWESOME!🌻
Thank you and thank you so much for watching!
How deep are the seeds planted?
They are not planted very deep at all. The seeds resemble a little straw so when we start them in cell trays we stick them in a shallow indention and cover them lightly. I hope this helps.
"What have you done to my peonies!? THEY'RE MARIGOLDS! YOU SILLY QUEEN!"
I absolutely love peonies as wel. Thank you so much for watching.
@@auyannaplants lol I don't think anyone knows this quote from a certain movie lol. So whenever I see Marigolds and/or Peonies I think of the quote from the movie.
Brandi used to be my 5th grade teacher
Thanks so much for watching!
I buy them to put them around my tomato plants 🥰
Yes they are amazing and beautiful as companion plants. Thank you so much for watching!
Do marigolds self-seed?
Yes they definitely self seed if you don't remove the spent flower. Thank you so much for watching!
I got so scared when I watched this video I have marigolds and I was scared I wasn't going to be able to buy marigolds again I got so scared I definitely need to change my ways!
@@auyannaplants Well, that's what I did...but oh well! I'll keep trying!
@@jellyroll2102 I just spread them in the garden. Lightly cover with soil. It takes a while for them to come up sometimes.
A couple questions for you
You pinched off the heads after that had turned brown and closed up.
Direct to the point of planting , so much chit chat ayyyy. Bye bye
Thanks for watching😀
👍👍👍
Takes too long for them to grow up here in the northwest
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Thank you so much for watching!
For years I have been trying to grow marigolds but they just won't grow for me.
Oh now sorry to hear that. Do you start them from seeds?
I try to!
Thanks for watching!
they keep insect pests away if you use as companion plants fruits/ veggies, aphids, knats, spiders ect
YES!!! I plant them around the perimeter of my garden every year. Thank you so much for watching!
