- Is it Jeremy Brett, Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jnr..or is it the written works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Whichever Holmes is your favourite, you will want to visit The Sherlock Holmes Museum in London, the spiritual home of the great detective.
The museum is located at 221b Baker Street, London (where else!) in a 4 storey Victorian house, built in 1815. Step through the door and you are transported back in time. The house is authentically decorated as if Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr Watson had just stepped out to investigate one of their cases. On display are many familiar objects from the great detective’s stories. My film is a tour around the entire Sherlock Holmes Museum and shop.
The “consulting detective” Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print in 1887 in “A Study in Scarlet”, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle went on to write 4 novels and 56 short stories featuring the great detective, as narrated by his trusted companion Dr Watson. The short stories, set in Victorian/Edwardian England were popularised in The Strand Magazine. Conan Doyle wrote about his crime-solving hero for 10 years before killing him off in 1893 in “The Final Problem”, then followed an 8 year silence, but due to public pressure Sherlock Holmes returned in 1901, in his most famous adventure, “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”
The museum takes up the top 3 floors, including the sitting room and bedrooms of Holmes and Watson. The majority of the rooms are used as exhibit rooms, including life-size figures of Holmes, Watson and other characters from the books, among the figures you may recognise:
Professor Moriaty.
The King of Bohemia and Irene Adler.
Dr Jabez Wilson From The Redheaded League.
Brunton from The Musgrave Ritual.
Dr Grimesby Roylott from The Speckled Band.
Charles Augustus Milverton and his assailant.
Such is the detective’s popularity that stories featuring the most well-known detective have been adapted for film, television, radio and even video games. Plays featuring Sherlock Holmes have been appearing on stage since 1899 and over 70 actors have played Sherlock Holmes on film. Basil Rathbone starred in 14 popular Hollywood films in the 1930s and 40s, bringing the character to a world-wide cinema audience. An enigmatic performance but often let down by the material, which now seems somewhat dated. In 2009 Guy Ritchie reinvented the film franchise, with a re-imagining of the great detective using the enigmatic talents of Robert Downey Jnr, perfect for a modern audience. On television Jeremy Brett’s faithful portrayal of Holmes epitomised the tormented soul and true essence of the great detective and was well-supported by David Burke, then Edward Hardwicke as Watson. In 2010 the talented Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt, brought the detective into the modern day, mixing old and new elements superbly and with a terrific performance from Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes.
Holmes' creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a doctor and author, born in Edinburgh in 1859, where he later studied medicine. He went into medical practice in 1882 in Plymouth and then Porstmouth, where he started writing for publication. His first Sherlock Holmes story was sold in 1886.
Purchase your tickets inside the museum to the right of 221b Baker Street. The museum is a little pricey especially if you visit as a family but I feel that as a fan this is something that has to be done at least once. Visit the museum website for current prices. The museum does not include any displays of Holmes in the movies or on TV, which might be a nice addition, and focuses primarily on location and characters from the stories.I would allow yourself between 1-2 hours to browse around the house. I did not have to wait to enter the museum but I understand that at busy times you may expect to queue as the house can only hold a certain number of visitors. The museum is located near Baker Street tube station, where there is a statue of Sherlock Holmes which is worth seeing.

Sometimes i suppose that Sherlock Holmes is a real person😅
There is someone close to sherlock he is called sherlock his real name is colin cloud
Ethan Laffitte don’t get fooled by him, he payed the actors...
It may interest you to know that people from around the world still write to 'Sherlock Holmes' at '221b Baker Street' to ask for his advice - even though it's known and provable that he was a fictional creation. On top of that... if he HAD existed as a real person, he'd be an incredible 161 years old now. What more blatant example can you have of the power of words to transform beliefs? Is it any wonder, then, that people still believe in the literal truth of the Holy Scriptures, which pre-date the Holmes stories by thousands of years? I guess that one day someone will discover where Hogwarts is.
@Darren Gilliam Have you read of the Oscar Slater case? Doyle actually employed Holmes' methods in acquitting an innocent man.
@@MartianTom I know he is a fictional character but I still want to write a letter
While Benedict Cumberbatch was great as New age Sherlock, to me Jeremy Brett captured the walking talking essence of the character from Conan Doyle's book. When I think of Sherlock I see Jeremy. He was simply amazing.
Absolutely.
Agreed. I would consider Frogwares’ Sherlock Holmes as the second best one (it’s a game). After Jeremy Brett.
Jeremy Brett was a Sydney Paget drawing come to life! ❤
TOTALLY AGREED....he seemed to be the only one with any dedication to the original character
If I ever visit London, there is no way I would miss this place. such an Icon mate. 😀
Most realistic fictional character ever.....
I pass by every weekend and really need to visit
Awsome. Someday ill be there too...😍
Have you gone yet?
I gotta love the Granada painting in the corner of the room
Is it normal that i just, cried during almost the whole video?
relate...
No... Something is wrong with you.
@@Locutus maybe
@@Locutus I knew I got problems.
yes it is, i cired too so dont worry :)
I just love Basil Rathbone and his deep smooth Basso Voice as Sherlock Holmes
Was there once. Love everything about Sherlock 👏
I love sherlock holmes very much.he is my hero
Jeremy Brett the best!
YES there’s even an black butler anime refrence to him in the manga
Obviously (also Benedict Cumberbatch)
I loved the "Young Sherlock Holmes" from 1985. I don't care what people say about continuity. It is in the same spirit as the original works.
Livanov's Holmes is the best. And.. should have playing Dashkevich theme here
Thank you for such a cool video)
Oh, and about your question from the description...
I didn't watch many films and series about Sherlock Holmes. I only watched "Sherlock" BBC series with Cumberbatch and "the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson" Soviet series with Livanov. I really liked them)) Well, I can say, that the "Soviet Sherlock" turned out really similar to the "Book Sherlock" and I appreciate it. But the "BBC Sherlock" is thrilling too. I enjoy watching and reading Sherlock Holmes a lot.
And like the most people in the comments, I want to visit the museum as well :)
P. S. There might be mistakes in my comment. If you find any, correct me, okay?
(I'm not a native English speaker).
that gunshot scared the shit out of me
Sherlock Holmes is the best.
Ronald Howard was my favorite Sherlock Holmes and I loved his Watson
Jeremy Brett to me was the best Sherlock Holmes. The actor died way too soon. :( Adored Basil Rathbone as well, but Nigel's playing Watson as a buffon was a put off.
TOTALLY AGREED
Basil Rathbone embodied Holmes, as did Jeremy Brett. Peter Cushing also did a noble version. I love them all.
Jeremy Brett was the best.
TOTALLY AGREED....the ONLY One who tried to get it right At All
The best Sherlock Holmes ever is the Russian variant , the actor Vasiliy Livanov . He is a real Sherlock , his voice, his appearance, everything 😍 Even the Queen Elizabeth || admitted that he is the best!!!!
Jeremy Brett
only
I LOVED the Basil Rathbone movies when I was a kid....can't even watch them since seeing Jeremy
I agree with some comments here. Jeremy Brett was the best Sherlock Holmes actor. Frogwares also did a great job and created a very good virtual Sherlock Holmes (their combat games excluded because Sherlock Holmes was a detective and profiler and not a cowboy). Because of them, I also think sometimes that Sherlock Holmes would be a real person.
The Real hero, great Sherlock Holmes ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great and Grand details.
THANK YOU
3:24 I almost died of fright🤣🤣🤣
Legendary "My dear Watson" ❤❤
I love Sherlock Holmes ❤️
Hi , great videos
iam abt to cry
Sweet I went there today
Este é um espaço que eu adoraria visitar
I must visit here
Is there any way that i can order stuff from the gift shop?
I found the link attached below, but it says closed for re-stocking? Perhaps try later. I guess most of the items stocked will be available online elsewhere unless you want something specifically related to the museum. Hope that helps.
www.sherlock-holmes.co.uk/shop/default.html
do they have anything signed by the actors
There weren't any displays within the museum that focused on Holmes on film or screen, which I think there could have been. I didn't see anything in the shop signed by the actors, but you might want to email them to check.
I went there yesterday it was amazing
I have a dream... I wanna be in this museum but I am live in Russia and dont have money for airplane to London 😪
Then start working on it to chase your dream. Work hard, save money, and you will be there one day. Good Luck!
@@wongkhaining4536 that is some great advice, you’re awesome
My dream too.
Do it with maps, books and your imagination, better than a physical visit, also for the environment
Whenever I think of Sherlock Holems, I see Peter Cushing. He's the best. Second to him is Basil Rathbone. No one else comes close. As far as Dr. Watson is concerned, Nigel Stock does an excellent job.
not only me who thought he was a real person when i was a kid
Where is Vasiliy Livanov? He is the best actor who played Sherlock Holmes
Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes actor. The rest comes after him.
Very good. Thank you. x
i love this games THANKOU
Amazing deductive_ SH❤️
🇺🇸Detective Columbo and Sherlock Holmes were friends 😊
I always wondered why it is called Baker Street? All the bakers were in Pudding Lane, that's where an apprentice left a bun in the oven and started the great fire of London in 1666 :o)
Hi George, apparently Baker Street got it's name from William Baker the builder who laid out the street in the 18th Century, so no apparent connection to the great fire.
It actually got his name from Tom Baker, the best Dr Who. Interestingly enough he also played Sherlock Holmes on stage and TV, so maybe that's why they named Baker Street after him.
I think I like your explanation better than mine.
poolworld1 tom baker wasn't even born when Sherlock was made...
@@user-xw6uh3yp7g It was a joke. But Tom Baker really played Sherlock Holmes in a tv series www.imdb.com/title/tt0174399/
How did Holmes fall asleep with those criminals' pictures right on the opposite wall?
Jeremy Brett is the best actor of Sherlock.
Can we talk about the music....you'll know where it's from 😌✋
Portrait of an Ottoman Pasha? Woow seems intresting,hi from Turkey
That is General Gordon.
Mi è piaciuto lo Sherlock Holmes di Benedict Camberbach è il museo di Sherlock Holmes.
The wax figures are no longer there, they have been removed.
Mi libro me llevo a qui
Cual?
Forensics. Dr. Joseph Bell of Scotland was the real detective that Doyle based this character on. It is elementary, dear readers. Indeed. This is on Dr. Bell's grave:
And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.
music is completely out of tune!!! it would be better from the Soviet TV series set, that's where the masterpiece!
At the moment, I would prefer any Ukrainian anthem over any Russian music, sorry. Better use the Granada Sherlock Holmes intro then. Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes anyway (imho). I’m fine with the music in the video.
Almost like he really existed. Nice collection of Victoriana.
💖💖💖💖💖💖
Who is that man in the portrait ? 02:00
Probably Charles George Gordon, a popular national figure during the Victorian era, who died at the siege of Khartoum.
@@MrFord4210 he looks like an Ottoman Pasha doesnt it?

Io ci sono stata e carinissimo
its CONAN DOYLE
За какие деньги этот дом купили Назарбаевы? И откуда эти деньги?
Well....holmes isn't a real one....so who are those things belong to.....and why there is a museum for him ???
Mar Yem .......
For a fictional character who's death cause massive outcry, building or giving him a museum is just small feat.
Beside he's a cultural icon and is really known in detective/mystery literature.
😅😀
It all looks pretty naff.
like si vienes por el portu edmodo
If Detective Sherlock would be alived, he would have a hard days working with the political corruption in Brazil, or he would be engaged to mafia in Brasil too.
He'd be Brazil's current Justice Minister
Peter Cook was my favourite
Peter Cook was a comic legend. Sorry I will limited for the number of choices. Feel free to share any other favourites here. What about Robert Stephens or Sir Ian McKellan.
He played Holmes in a film but I think he also did in his TV show. Not only was he the best Holmes ever, he was the best person ever.
MrFord4210 I like the new one, Uhm I think it is Benedict I think!
Nice video! When visiting another city or country, every educated person must visit a museum. Visiting museums is very useful and fascinating. A love for the "eternal" and "beautiful" is awakened in a person, the beginnings of greatness and respect for history are inculcated. It is impossible to turn the excursion into something banal, ordinary and boring. The person should be a comprehensively developed person, cultured, educated, critically and analytically thinking, with knowledge of foreign languages. It is the knowledge of a foreign language that opens wide prospects for a person to realize his/her creative potential, career and financial growth. I would like to recommend the practical training course by Yuriy Ivantsiv "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language", where you can find lots of useful information how to learn a foreign language quickly. Learn a foreign language and realize your creative potential on an international scale! The international community needs creative ideas! Thanks to the author of the channel for a very fascinating tour!
Sherlock is real or not
