My mum was a social worker before she became a mother. We watched this video and she suggested a one page profile. Something you could do with the child where they could write or otherwise indicate their favourite colour, what food they like, what shows or movies do they like, what is their favourite subject at school. In her experience, this takes time but it allows the child to form their own identity and help their self esteem and show them that they matter and people care about these little things. We all had one and it’s good to update every few years. It’s not for everyone but I think it’s worth trying if the child is open to it

Your event planning background must be really helpful in situations like this! I would imagine that quite a lot of the planning and execution of complicated events has to do with keeping track of a multitude of small details.

    So organized, so compationate!!!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I watch your different videos for hours last night, crying. I'm not a foster parent (or even a parent), nor did I grow up as a foster child (and I'm a grown up). Still, I don't manage myself (1 adult) half as well as you manage all these chaotic situations. I'm seriously thinking of trying to adapt your templates (and other stuff, except maybe putting locks on the kitchen drawers...) to my own life!!!
I think part of the reason I cry while watching your videos is joy to see such a beautiful, wise and compassionate human being does exist. ♥️♥️♥️

I would love a tour of all the papers you have hanging on the board behind you. I know you cant share the actuals papers because they likely have personal, confidential details, but it would be neat if you could list off what the documents were.

It would be helpful if you could illustrate some of these with examples. For instance, a sample placement call. I obviously know you can't use a real example, but a hypothetical child or sibling set and how that placement call might flow.

@wilczajagoda734 yes, but not in much detail, that checklist (even if you don't get answers to all of the questions) would indicate a longer and more involved convo than those short videos. Also, it would be good to have examples of the other sheets filled out for a (hypothetical) individual child, which I don't think she's done so far.

How do businesses deal with you being a foster parent? You must have to take time off for court cases etc?

i had a very flexible boss, but I ended up moving to a consulting position so I had more control over my schedule and the projects I took on.

logistics question about the communication journal: when do the parents fill it out? I can imagine many parents may not want to add journaling to their plate during their visits with their kids.

    • @foster.parenting
      @foster.parenting  7 месяцев назад +3

it happens during visits or they could take it home with them and bring it back next time. it depends on the parent and what's being discussed. honestly, if longer discussions need to happen, i'd try to get a meeting with the parent or set up a phone call. The journals are usually the first step in relationship building. It's short, basic, and really just to establish initial connections and build a rapport.

Regarding people not knowing what's going on while providing services, my parents were kinship foster carers to my cousins, and they often complain about the time they were in family therapy, mentioned the foster kids' abusive bio dad by name, and the therapist asked who that was. And it wasn't just that she'd forgotten his name - when my parents clarified, it became clear that she'd forgotten my parents weren't their bio parents. How are you supposed to do family therapy if you don't know the basic structure of the family you're doing therapy with?

I am waiting for the foster application to be sent to my home, you inspired me to apply!
I have a video idea for you? Its something I specifically am looking for.. I am trying to make my home "foster ready" I dont mean how do I pass a home study.. I am trying to make my entire home customized to family and fostering! For example.... I am adding a main floor laundry room, and butlers pantry - where I can have open shelves food that is easily accessible for children with food insecurities ( a tip from you! )
We are also adding another shower, and half bath - so we will have 2 full and 1 half..
I am also adding a movie theater to my garage, so we can have family movie nights! Currently my theater is in the basement, But I want more seating!
Lets pretend you had extra money to renovate, What would you do to your home to make it the ultimate foster home?

If there’s a child that was in your home and aged out of the FC system it would be great if you could do a video with them.
