- This is a live performance by Elin Brimheim Heinesen of the song "Sóleyan" (the Buttercup). The lyrics in Faroese are written by Jens Pauli Heinesen, Elin’s father. And Elin composed the song. (OBS! Scroll down for a translation to English of the lyrics or turn on the captions for English subtitles).
Unfortunately, Elin’s father did not live to hear the song. He died in 2011 and she made the song in 2012 to an event in the Nordic House in Tórshavn (capital of the Faroe Islands), organized in order to honor the memory of her father on the day he would have been 80 years old. She made an arrangement for choir, and the choir Tarira, conducted by Sunleif Rasmussen, sang this song at this event for the first time ever.
Elin about the lyrics: “My dad wrote the poem in the beginning of the 60’s, when the cold war was at it’s peak. I think that at that time everyone had this eerie feeling that something very bad could happen to them any time. But still, life had to go on as if there was no threat. It created a sort of fatalism. But typically for my dad, he always had nature in mind, which exists no matter what humanity is up to. Days, nights, seasons come and go and the buttercups bloom unnerved. In the big picture we as human beings are so incredibly tiny in comparison with greater forces at play.
Kind of relevant to think about now when humanity faces the threat of the Corona virus.”

SÓLEYAN
Kvøldar á sundi, nátt er í nánd
Sólin at havgeiri dregur
Nátarnir flúgva at sovandi strond
Minnini hava so kalda hond
Ið kínir tær, tá ið tú svevur
Streymar á sundi, streymar í mær
Broddur av drepandi iva
Sum melur í klingur, bønar um svar
Men dunið út úr gjáunum lær
At okkum, ið elska, ið liva
Tey spæla bert við okkum, lívsins kor
Tær sælu, lygnandi løtur
Nú lombini leika í grønari skor
Og heimar smildrast við eittans orð
Og sóleyan lýsir um fløtur
Sóleyan lýsir um fløtur

Translated to English:
THE BUTTERCUP
Dusk on the sound, the night is near
the sun draws near the edge of the sea
the fulmars fly towards the sleeping coast
The memories have such cold hand
that caresses you while you sleep
Stream on the sounds, flowing in me
a sting of deadly doubt
that swirls round and round, begging for answers
But the rumble from the gorges laughs
at us, who love - who live
They just play with us, the conditions of life,
the blissful, calm moments
where the lambs play on the green hillside
and worlds are shattered by a single word
and the buttercup illuminates the planes
the buttercup illuminates the planes

Innarligt og vakurt góða! :)
Came across this somehow when looking for small venues to perform in on the Faroes as I recorded some music there a few years ago. Very beautiful xx
Sera vakurt Elin
Beautiful music, I stumbled upon this. I don't understand this language but it is so soothing!
I have put English subtitles in the video, so now you have a chance of understanding the contents of the lyrics. :-)
