Superbe video. Let me add a couple of comments. In our loft, once we've decided how much to lower the saddle and then restrung the guitar, we'll start turning the truss rod clockwise (pls note: we always turn the truss rod with the strings under tension by spreading the D and G strings apart.) We're looking for buzzing. It first appears at the strings nearest the nut. We reverse the process once we get a buzz, turning the rod counterclockwise until it disappears. That's not everything we do but it's a good starting point.
That is super interesting!! This brings up a question that is always in the back of my mind. Can you easily break the truss rod by over doing it? Do you have limitations on how far you will turn it at a time? Can the fill around the truss rod (inside the neck) get displaced at any point and cause a rattle? Thanks for sharing your awesome methods! ❤️
High quality truss rods are pretty hard to break. They’re rectangular in shape and fit tightly in the slot so there shouldn’t be any fill. We make small adjustments, evaluating the results after each one.
@@Macmarr y’all make a stunningly beautiful guitar with impeccable sound. I have been beyond thrilled with mine! There’s no way a guitar like a MacMar should be under $5,000USD! Once people play one, they get it. Thank you for building these masterpieces!
I'm glad you are doing this video, because when I started buying guitars, no one told me guitars needed to be setup. So I would save my money, buy a guitar, and sell it if there was a problem. I knew nothing about guitars, didn't know how to play, and there was no internet back then to learn from. Eventually I learned about setup and now keep my guitars, electric and acoustic, with low neck relief, Low E at .080 and high E at .070, if there are no issues with the guitar. I can do this for acoustic and electric because electrics are 9's and acoustics are extra light gauge.
I've done a lot of setups, bridge re gluing or replacement for people, because I love doing the work, and I hate seeing someone go through the waste of money and the frustration that I went through. And no matter what the work is, if I can safely do it, I will do it, but I will not charge. I keep the old strings and cut out the brass string end and keep them in a jar, I have thousands of them. Some people have made bracelets out of them and wear them until their wrist turns green and falls off. (well almost)
Thanks for the great video, God bless. (sorry for the long post)
That is so funny that you experience the same thing I did. I sold a lot of guitars simply because I did not like the playability. Wish I had them now…they just needed a setup lol. Thank you for this response. ❤️
I really like the sound of your guitar and thank for the lesson.
Glad you like it! Thank you!
Your chord progressions are extraordinary. Thank you.
Thank you too! ❤️
Some players use a slide, heavier strings, drop tunings. My hygrometer says 60 in my room. In the winter it's a stuggle to keep it above 35 and that will make the bridge area sink.
humidy plays a big part in guitar wood changes! Its hard to control it! Thanks for the note!❤️
Great lesson!
Thanks! 😃
Another excellent video. Very clear information given in an enjoyable style. Everything is balance, just like life. Sometimes I forget this. Thanks for reminding me. Also thanks for telling me 100.00 is not too much to spend on my guitar to make it play like I want. Does your Mac and Marr really sound that good or are you doing something to electronically enhance the sound? If it sounds that good, I may have to learn to play a slightly narrower neck to get that guitar. Thanks so much for this video. Cheers
The mac &marr does not have a pickup in it. I am playing into a Shure mic to the Bose S1. My iPhone is recording the sound. The Mac & Marr sounds better than the recording but its what I have to make videos. Thanks ❤️
Wow this just sounds so wonderful❤️😍🥰🎶🎸
Great info 😊
Thanks for watching!❤️
I just LOVE your channel! I find it very encouraging and love your style as well as helpful tips! Please keep the videos coming!!! Is there a way that you would suggest one would practice daily in order to progress? I have not taken in person lessons and have been trying to learn with RUclips videos😊♥️
Thank you so much! RUclips is a great way to learn. There are so many great channels pack with all kinds of information. Keep a balance in your practice as you progress. Practice is not always fun because many of the skills take repeated attempts. But always add something fun to your practice time. In addition take just a few minutes to explore ideas - try your own ideas and listening to what sounds good. (get creative😀) if you have a little extra money there is an App called TrueFire. It provides lessons from the best players all over the world. It is not free. I pay about 100 a year for full access. Thanks again. 😀❤️
@@guitarnotions thank you!! I will do that 🎸
What tool or tools do you recommend to shave saddles? Thanks!!
Stewmac (online company) sells Nut and Saddle Sander - it holds the nut or saddle so you can easily roll over sandpaper on a flat surface. …ButI do think a flat surface and 150 and finish with 220 sandpaper is probably most important. Its ok if you don't have the tool to hold the saddle - its a luxury. You can hold it with your fingers but mark your goal with a pencil. Go slow, keep strokes flat and even.
@@guitarnotions Thanks so much! I'm familiar with Stewmac, so I'l check out that tool.
@@guitarnotions In our loft, we use a belt sander, but before we fire it up, we run a black Sharpie down the saddle as a marking gauge.
We used a belt sander at the school school I attended. I had never used one before, but once I learned, I was amazed at how it shaved the saddle so beautifully. Thanks for sharing your method. That would make it easier and much more precise for sure!!😀
That is some guitar !! I would love one but they dont ship to Scotland . Boo hoo
That's frustrating. The business model they use simplifies the process by not having a middle man. Looks like they are also selective to where they ship 😲
