COI - Lonely Water (1973, UK)

The most effective trick of its time to spare children the risk of drowning in the rivers, in which the Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water, a grim reaper esque figure voiced by Donald Pleasance, watches with satisfaction as the most foolhardy of children fall into his trap. Known for haunting Britons for years on end, this has been recognised as one of the most iconic of public information films, as a significant staple of British horror and of childhood trauma. The BFI upload of Lonely Water compares the reaper-like character to those in The Seventh Seal and Final Destination and describes their final sentence as an "ominous 'I'll be back' pre-dating Arnold Schwarzenegger by over a decade." As always, great work on this channel for providing a high-quality copy for public viewing.
The cinematography is incredible for its subtle depictions of drowning contrasting with intense jump cuts. The subversion of the Spirit's actions in the third incident provides an optimistic resolution, but his parting sentence adds to the former with caution, along with competing a painted message related to this PSA: sometimes accidental drowning can be prevented, other times not. Love how the last shot zooms into the ambiguous waters the Spirit's hood sinks into, I can't find the proper words for why.
Knowing how intense this was 50 years ago compared to far more frightening commercials afterward, this was a refreshing film study. Wikipedia has an article on this to provide a bit more sourced information.
