- In this short teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche discusses one of the four common foundational practices, also called the four thoughts. These practices help us understand our true nature and develop wisdom that can end suffering. They aid in seeing and ending our negative habitual patterns. The first thought, precious human birth, is a contemplation of appreciation of the freedoms and opportunities we have in our lives.

Had an ego death on psychedelics and it changed my life forever. I feel like I experienced death, I didn’t know much about Buddhism before I did the psychedelics which made me feel like I new the secrets to life., I felt this oneness with all living things, I felt like I had died and was fighting death but when I gave into it, I felt relief, I knew that it was okay to say goodbye to the ones I loved because I’d find the same love in the next life, personalities aren’t real, you will die, your character you’ve been playing will die but something about all living being is eternal, my acid experience has lead me to Buddhism.

I need advice on meditation. I meditate nearly every day for a few months but I get easily distracted and I get bored quickly. I wonder, is there any way to stop this? I'm 15 and have been meditating for nearly a year, so maybe the fact that I'm young may make it difficult but Mingyur Rinpoche was a teacher near my age. Granted, I haven't been meditating since I was 7, but I just want to stop getting distracted. Also, how can you tell a deep state of meditation from a light, distracted state?
Hi there,
Sometimes I feel this the case for me also. Have you tried a walking meditation? I also find going for a run before a meditation helps also or chanting. Counting to ten can aid in concentratijg a distracted mind, as you breath in count to ten and as you breath out do the same also.
I hope this helps.
All the best :)
meditation is anything but boring. Meditation from the outside may look boring - merely just sitting down, breathing, but meditation to the mediator is something inconceivable.
My advice to you is first, have a purpose. Why are you meditating in the first place? Is it to get a calm mind? To help with depression? To help combat insomnia? To loosen up and get rid of anxiety? All of these are good but meditation is far more than that. True meditation will completely revolutionize your life. You'll never, ever be the same person again, and I say that with great sincerity. Thus, meditation is a constant excitement of discovery, growth, peace, bliss, and most importantly freedom.
Through time you will know the difference between a light and deep meditation, so to speak. The deep meditations will come in time, you just have to be patient and consistent. Also, your lifestyle has a lot to do with entering into deeper states. Example, if you live in a very noisy area, and you always listen to loud music and are always talking and very active and so on, you will never be able to enter into deep meditation. But if you practice in a quiet room, with some nice tea and so on, you will get into a deep state tonight!
you are 100% right , life will never be the same , and in a good way, Meditation is the way to a calm life within you, makes you a very nice human , Have a great life and good advice Jason Gatar peace
Thank you so much Rinpochen la.
I hope you found your answer...it can be a challenge for sll humans because we are not able/expected to have all our thoughts disappear/go blank. A good teacher can help. How are you doing now?
