Taylor Swift really captured what makes her so popular and mysterious on Midnights, describing herself as “cryptic and Machiavellian”. Though she initially gained fame for her brutal honesty, diaristic song writing and being a complete open book, she has since become known for her aura of mystery, leaving clues and hidden messages and easter eggs. Her lyrics have evolved from being extremely detailed and personal, to being introspective and emotional enough that they feel intimate, while also being vague enough to leave room for interpretation. In terms of the information she lets slip about her private life, she lets you peek into her world, just enough, but leaves you wanting more. And no album of hers fits this description as much as Midnights.
In this video, I talk about the mystery of Midnights, the Tortured Poets Department, Folklore, Evermore, the re-recordings and Taylor's version albums, Taylor's upcoming 2024 new album, Taylor Swift lyrics, easter eggs and what we can expect the reviews and reactions to TTPD to be. - Развлечения
Midnights was a confused record but looking back at it, bejeweled kind of captured the relationship perfectly. She felt like he was holding her back and wouldn’t let her be her authentic self. Look at how many times she was seen out in public shortly after the breakup. She’s doing much better now, and I can’t wait to hear what really went down.
Confusing record*
Midnights was a combination of songs from 13 sleepless nights in her life (her words) and yet everyone assumes the songs are about Joe. While some of them may be, we have no idea which they are
@@Okai3427 Both confusing and confused, I would say. 😂
It's none of your business what happened, get a life
Midnights being “confusing,” makes sense since it’s supposed to be about thoughts from moments of her life at various midnights… as in the middle of the night when your thinking is dreamy and confused. 🤷🏼♀️
I think the album isn’t cohesive and this is a nicer way of trying to excuse that. Taylor is known for not having the most cohesive albums. It doesn’t take away from her talent though.
Midnights is a brilliant, dreamy, cosmic album with experimental lyrics, unexpected drops and sonic exploration
Midnights and TTPD might be siblings like folklore and evermore
yeah like how you have 2 siblings that are just alike then you have 2 other kids who also act alike but nothing like the fist 2
yes. The album pics for TTPD are very similar to the midnights pics, like how folklore and evermore have similar album pics.
They’re like siblings except they’re not born in the same year

I saw someone on tumblr theorize that midnights is taylor looking back at her past to see what worked in her past relationships and what didn’t. And I like that theory I think it aligns with what Taylor has said about midnights
*_T H I S_*
i’ve been saying for months now that the album is about her contemplating breaking up with her partner and finding herself searching through her past experiences and relationships for answers on what to do. that’s why it’s so confusing, she was literally just confused on what to do and ruminating.
Also to add to the meaning of Bejeweled, I believe that it also insinuates her feelings of going back to pop and being a major pop star again. As she said during Lover era, she felt like Lover was one of her last eras that will go successful and was thinking of finally laying low, but then after folkmore she realized she can bounce back once again in pop stardom, and along with her breakup with Joe and breaking away from the private life, she believes that she can still rise back as a major icon like she was during 1989, and now we've known that she is bigger than she ever was in 1989 era, and her 80+ paparazzi shots from 2023 alone proves that she's now shimmering, she's still bejeweled.
❤this comment
so that means TTPD will be an upbeat pop like 1989? I'M SO EXCITED OMGG
Something absolutely no one is talking about is how all of the variants are names of pubs in or near England.
Idk but I have a gut feeling that TTPD will be even MORE confusing than midnights. Sure, it may clear up some things but still
Yup I'm afraid she's being even more cryptic to the storyline.
I read on X, someone stated the best that Joe never take her Pop song so seriously and they both indeed liking sad alt/indie songs together. So the "Poets" album would even more artistic to the lyrics, the way that it would hurt deeper than ever before. We all know Taylor is a little petty, naming the album similarly after Joe's so called exclusive top men group chat is already wild enough. She's going to turning her pen into a murder weapon. Of course this is just my interpretation, but that tweet with a few threads followed behind it tells it the best.
@@afiefswift5403Could you give me the link to the thread? I would love to know more about this theory
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Joe was not sunshine, so we can take him out of the midnight rain equation
If I'm remembering correctly, I think I read somewhere that Midnight Rain is about Taylor Lautner 🧐
@@MadlosPictureHouseits definetely for Taylor Lautner
I’ve heard it was Tom Hiddleston…
@@Youngd547 wouldnt make sense, "he wanted a bride, I was making my own name" during 2016, when she dated Tom Hiddleston, she was already one of the biggest pop stars in the world
It's about her highschool boyfriend
Question is definitely about harry styles. The clues are all there:the title question and the theme of the song seems like the whole them of 1989 which has a lot of questions through out the album like is it over now? Are we out of the woods? I wish you would, and the use of i remember from out of the woods for the intro of the song. Question is definitely like the conclusion of the 1989 album.
Question is about kissgate. It's legit a play by play of that night
oooOoOOOooOo hhhhhh
Please do tell. @@shannonm6118
I know it is, it doesn't mean she is not drawing parallels, though; why explore (again) all of these past relationships? Why revisit all of these feelings in that specific moment of time, i.e, before the tour starts? She was feeling it, she knew (obviously) way before we did, and her mind was wandering and feeling déja vus, not being able to not notice similarities between what she was living in the moment of composition of these songs and what she felt in the moments she was writing about
@@shannonm6118 not the g@ylor theory 😭😭 bffr
I personally think that TTPD will be a Midnights 2.0 album. A, it is the next consecutive album after Midnights. B, the album is listed as “Pop” in iTunes. C, it’s giving off very Midnightys vibes which was an album that tbh was very hard to predict how it would sound. Imo midnights resembled the look of like a low tempo album but it was definitely a pop anthem. Thinking same with TTPD. I mean I think these songs are instead of being just sad, will be a picture of the whole story. We got hints of it with Your Losing Me, Bejeweled, etc.
It's listed as pop cause they don't know the genre yet, so there is no way to know that for sure:)
For soundwise as long as Taylor and Jake stop using those snyth, we'll be fine.

Maybe the interpretation of Maroon could hold some truth within its story but not necessarily hers. The fact she can tell a detached situation with such a personal manner is among the largest talents she’s known for, “Sweet Nothing” for example. This song and many others could and do mean a lot to people who are in WLW relationships and aid in ending stigma throughout the generations that tune in, which she’s definitely all for. Doesn’t mean she’s sapphic in any way herself, she’s a songwriter that constantly bends the truth like she stated and the act of storytelling something like this could be pretty beneficial in society 💁♂️
She was with Joe six years. He helped her write some songs on Midnights. She broke up with him. She says why in the songs. He didn’t want publicity so she felt she had to hide like a bank robber she said on a late night show. He wasn’t trying to keep her. She was with him during Covid.
Covid is still going on but i get what youre saying

@@donnad1204 covid is keeping very many vulnerable people isolated and disabling people left and right. Wastewater data tells us it's still very present since people are barely testing anymore. i think midnights is the result of what taylor talks about in lavender haze. she’s very much aware that her relationship is headed towards a cliff/isn’t healthy/good for her, but she chooses to stay in it anyways, blocking out outside opinions on the relationship and possibly people pointing out “red flags” to her about her significant other. from there, midnights then takes us on a journey where taylor is forced to re-examine her past relationships/her life in general through the lense of what’s going on in her current relationship. so songs like maroon, question, and midnight rain are technically about both circumstances. she’s being both retrospective and introspective simultaneously. it’s a masterpiece of an album and i’m so happy to hear you give it some praise at the beginning of the video because i agree, it’s definitely hated because it’s misunderstood and/or because people wanted another folklore. great video!!!
I do think that some songs have moments from multiple relashionships. Like bejeweled, she probably have had multiple boyfreinds that didn't appriciate her enough. So the "do you have a man" part could be about Harris, but the song itself could also be about her feelings in the (at that point) current relasionship.
I think this is pretty accurate.
Whatever the sounds of Ttpd I'm here for it!!!can't wait!!!!
You should also focus on songs like renegade and the Alcott which says a lot about their problematic relationship. Also, I think TS11 will be only dealing with Joe Alwyn.
I just can't wait to read those lyrics 🤩
Midnights is my fav taylor album ❤
Sweet nothing confirmed that the lyrics about a poem are taken from a story about Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney. So it’s not autobiographical in that way
She was just saying that to throw us off, this album is gonna confirm everything
You know that sure? She's lying a lot to avoid the media highlight about her breaking up with Joe. And she's even covering up with her new romance that sparks in the horizon.
@@IAmAHater5837 yup. Taylor just threw the song and even Lover to denial playlist 😅
Just to throw that in, sweet nothing was co-written by William Bowery aka Joe Alwyn.
@@afiefswift5403 she was comparing herself to the pebble: "does it miss Wicklow, sometimes?" , like she does miss NYC and stardom?
She is so beautiful I like her voice
I so badly want a country/rock or pop/rock album from her!!
I really like this theory, I think it's going to be a lot like midnights in the sense that there are going to be a lot of upbeat songs with deep lyrics, like anti hero. It's 3 days away I can't wait!!!
I hope you do a follow up to this after ttpd has been out for nearly a month 😀
anyone who thinks she's written a song about matty healy is nuts.
Friend, she wrote a song about Tom Hiddleston and he was a LITERAL REBOUND. Don't underestimate her ability to write songs about nothing relationships. 😂
@@baked_alaska Fair, fair! My guess if any song would be about him it'll be Guilty as Sin? Just cos it's after Florida!!! And she is kinda guilty for dating him 😂 we shall SEE
@@baked_alaska Did you forget that she met his parents and showed herself being in a relationship publicly? And Matty we have nothing aside from a few pictures of them holding hands
I’m hoping for a synthy sound
Stop. No. Burn the synth to the ground forever. She could make any pop records without the snyth.
Please no
A+++++++++++++ loved your analysis and editing choices!!!
I think TTPD will be Midnights + 1989
I think bejeweled is about Taylor’s issues with old management. She also references shoes as a present and in my tears ricochet she talks about jewels she gave him, which I also think is about Scott. Just makes the most sense with all the lyrics to me
I believe Midnights is confusing and confused because Taylor was.
She needed a new album for the Eras tour, because without a new Era it was simply a Greatest Hits tour. I think she came up with the concept of Midnights because of her state of mind back then, introspective and confused, but she couldn’t commit to the concept fully because her longest relationship was falling apart, and that’s what was really on her mind. Hence tracks like Bejewelled that are pretty obviously about Joe, or songs where she keeps things vague. You don’t want to be too honest with your lyrics if you still have hopes to save your relationship. There’s a reason she kept You’re Losing Me in the vault until the very end.
After Midnights was released and the relationship finally ended, she had the clarity to look at what she was going through for what it was. The end of her longest relationship. Enters TTPD.
In terms of sound, I predict that it will be less synth-heavy and more country/rock-ish vibe with real instruments, given that Dessner is a confirmed producer and Post Malone has been going on a feature run on country songs as of late
very good analysis of sweet nothing!! never thought of that.
Maybe sweet nothing could have a double meaning. like, the relationship is sweet, but it's also like nothng. stale, boring, and she gets nothing from him.
I still believe since this was made consequently with Midnights 2 years ago as per Taylor Swift , it will have the lyricism of Folklore/Evermore and the sound of Midnights (synth-pop and dream-pop).
The songwriting on Midnights (apart from a few songs) is very nonspecific, which goes against who Taylor is as an artist. That's why I think it's her worst album and mostly felt like an attempt to get a pop album out before going on tour. Hopefully she learned from this with TTPD and is more specific with her songwriting like she usually is.
I feel like her lyrics in midnights are absolutely not a mystery and pretty easy to decipher imo. Idk how people don't think that.
It's funny you say it's her "worst" album. I get what you're trying to say, but it did win album of the of the year. So even if you didn't like it, the critics did
I want to know who called Taylor a covert narcissist. That's one of the worst things a person could be.
Very good video essay and beautiful voice, just subscribed! please do something for Lana Del Rey 😍 I'd love to hear your thoughts on her and her artistry
i disagree that midnights is the first time her muses aren’t clearcut. i’d say this is the case for debut (ofc she wasn’t famous then 😭), fearless and speak now.
you said it was clear who vigilante shit is about…who? 😭
7:23 - 7:30 she said midnights was a collection of songs she’d written throughout her life around midnight that never made it to an album before…
i don’t think anti hero and dear reader is contradictory to bejeweled…she’s very clearly talking about confidence in shining aka “being the life of the party”, not confidence in anything deeper than that (being a good role model)
lavender haze is about public pressure to get married, not that she doesn’t want to get married, she’s rejecting the public, not an actual hypothetical proposal
…perhaps glitch and labyrinth aren’t about the same person. but also isn’t glitch about a glitch in the status quo “We were supposed to be just friends” “I was supposed to sweat you out” but now they’re together…to me it doesn’t sound like a song about a relationship glitching out at all lol
i don’t think praising taylor’s mind “all the time” makes a relationship predictable and stale, what
10:49 i actually don’t think evermore is the only exception to “drastic change from previous album”, i think fearless, speak now and red aren’t that different sonically/in production (obviously there’s a few standout differences but i mean overall), nor 1989/rep (but i can also seen an argument otherwise for those two)
once you find out “question” samples “out of the woods”, a song clearly about harry, it’s very obvious the first half of the chorus is referring to when they confirmed their relationship publicly with a new years kiss
I think Taylor is sick of her fans knowing every detail and each album that comes out from now including ttpd will be more vague and confusing
She’s big enough to need to expose every detail of her life
Would've Could've Should've is either Taylor Lautner or John Mayer bc of the lyric "at 19" could be a nod to Dear John when she says "Don't you think 19's too young to be messed with?" Or a nod to Back to December
Taylor didn't "mess with" her tho. And he was good to her. He was also younger than her I believe so saying "too young to be messed with" would imply that she was the younger one in the situation.
Of course Taylor would rise and shine once she returns frontstage. She just took a pause after 1989.
Taylor was shining throughout the globe like the sun during the 1989 era, but was shut down by everyone in 2016. 2017-2019 was her trying to gain back the momentum with Joe trying to pull her away from the spotlight. Then the pandemic happened and had to pause. Once the pandemic ended, she was back, resumed the 1989 legacy and shined brighter than ever.
It's not confusing, it's clearly about Joe... He hid her and she stayed hidden whilst writing reputation album and then in covid days hidden again writing folklore and evermore... She wants to be shown off not hidden in the basement, such relatable songs 😮😢
ttpd i believe should be rock! i need a rock album by her so thats probably why i think it should be. 😫
You know Midnights won a Grammy for AOTY right? It not being received well is news to me.
❤
Maybe it's about random things other than her? :p
Staying in a lavender haze doesn’t mean you’re pushing someone away, though? As a bi genderfluid person, I want to stay in the lavender haze because that’s where we are happiest. We don’t need to do things just because society says so. But I’m not going to be with someone who is pulling away, duh.
How is midnights a "mystery"?
She doesn't value her privacy.... That's y she doesn't like Joe... He wants her to be private with him and she wants to tell the world about her love

Midights is a mid...album. The reason? The poetic and lyrical statement of 13 sleepless nights and the 70s aesthetic don't collide well with that dull sound, boring production, uninspipiring melodies and instrumentals.
To me, although my opinion most likely will sound wrong to most people, when you make such promotion the songs "must" follow your picked aesthetic especially when you haven't released any song for people to know the sound. My first impression was "Ok, 70s. That means soft rock, indie pop, alternative and maybe 70s disco pop for most likely singles". And we got this. You're On Your Own Kid is a great example. Could've been an amazing song (still is really good) but to me it feels rushed and unfinished as if these songs on the album were somehwere and lost, put together for this project. Bejeweled and Mastermind are the greatest examples of could've been amazing songs but the instrumentals behind them are so childish, stripped and annoying that feel... meh! And not to start about Karma, the clown song.
And the worst of the bunch, Midnight Rain and Question...? whose instrumentals I could've made with Garageband and sing on top of them in like 30 minutes each.
Midnights was a break up album. Just a bit less blatant than usual
I felt odd about midnights. It’s such a different writing style but none of the songs are cohesive. She played the 70’s part for the anti hero and promotional. It’s not my fav.
I think any relationship with her will be problematic. Wait...there will be problems with Kelcie. Deja vu is setting in from the island vacation scenario with Travis.
Being this famous and brutally honest (sometimes petty) in her lyrics is not something easy for any relationship, but she is someone who loves deeply, fight and put effort in supporting her man, so we’ll see.
Maroon and Midnight Rain are so Karlie Koded
Yall are delusional if you think any of her songs are about that lipless demon other than it's time to go 😘
