Tyler, one of the best overland FJ rigs I’ve seen to date! You mentioned that your upper control arms are Total Chaos but would prefer a closed system. Can you explain what a closed system is and recommended brands?
If you look at a photo of the TC, you will see a big shiny uniball where the arm pivots. Dirt, mud, and sand get in that and make a hell of a squeak and it destroys the interior Kevlar lining. So every year or two you have to replace the uniball. You are also supposed to spray a dry film lube on them every so often. I put SPC control arms on my other Fj I had for a while, and those had a rubber boot to protect the joint, and also a grease zerk to make lubing them easy.

Hey David! I appreciate the support man, it means a lot! Check out my dual battery video on the lithium and the Redarc, for a vehicle this size its ideal. Just came across your video dig it! I too have an FJ my third actually. I've gone jeep Wrangler then Grand Cherokee, Four Runner just can't get the FJ out of my system. Question, really interested in those seats but you make it sound like a real hassle to get them to work properly a little pricey too. Do you have another suggestion for seat replacement. Also watched your search for the dinosaur tracks. I pull a Winnebago Micro Mini with the FJ. Any suggestions on where we could set up camp to check out Cave Spring I believe it's off the 191 to the 211 trail? Just subscribed
Thanks for subscribing! Shoot me an email or IG message. I don’t like advising any campsites out in the open, even if they are already popular spots! As for the seats, it was a bit of a hassle and I’m a big time DIY guy. But I wouldn’t trade it. I’ve done 4 trips now of 15-24 hours one way on each, and I’m not sore getting out of the vehicle. If I were you, I’d find a shop or a buddy who is willing to tackle it. It’s so worth it, even though it had a hassle factor. It wasn’t a very challenging ordeal. I have some info that would help the install if you decide to buy. I can email that as well.
Inspiring build! Two quick questions: 1. What’s the height of the truck from top to bottom with the RTT on? 2. Do you keep the RTT mounted on all year round? (Apologies if answered already in video)
Not sure on height, I will try to get that asap. And yes, it’s always mounted and ready to go. It’s not fun to unload, and the solar is on the tent so it keeps the fridge going 24/7 365.
Great solution for the rear diff issue. The 80 series diffs are bomber... Thinking of doing the same on my 2014 fj. Did diamond build the entire housing?.. Mounting tabs for shocks? Links. Coilpan. Ect?
It’s originally from east coast gear supply. I actually got it second hand for pretty cheap compared to new. The axle comes ready to rock, everything bolts up like factory. Diamond axle chose to keep toyota parts is why they built it for the 80 diff. The factory Toyota axle shafts slide right in. Just swap brake parts over and do your wheel seals while your in there. There are different axles out there, but the Diamond has the cool factory of having 80 series parts. Makes my Fj feel more grown up!
Whoa! What an awesome FJ! Great job on this build. Love the rear diff you installed. My 2007 MT never had differential issues. I'm thinking of regearing to 4.56s because I would like to install a front locker/larger tires. I am curious, by regearing would this solve the weak 8" differential issue or is an entire new one required?
Actually, regearing makes it more of a concern. When you regear, to fit them they have to be slightly thinner. So it actually is a little weaker unfortunately. Do a search in the Fj forums about this very issue. Might be worth trying to find a 2010+ axle. They had the 8.2” diff which is much stronger.
No problem. Plenty of people have regeared their 8” and have been fine. I took preventative measures since my Fj is really heavy. If you do decide to regear the 8”, do the swap from East Coast Gear supply. They come with a 5-7 year warranty (I forget) so if it blows up they will get a new one on the way.
@@IndependenceOverland Awesome! Thanks for that. I will check them out. I've had my FJ since 06. Hasn't been a daily driver since 2014. I should be more knowledgeable on aftermarket items/options. I need to give my rig some attention and some much needed upgrades!
Tyler, I came across your channel. I love your set up. I am also an FJ owner. Thanks for sharing. I see that you are equipped with a Rhino Rack Backbone System, but I don’t believe you have the pioneer platform attached. If not, what make and length rails are you using to attached your RTT? I have the backbone and pioneer system, but I am uncertain of its application with just rails. I believe this is the system you have setup. I feel it would be a waste since the RTT takes up all the roof’s real estate to utilize the platform. Also the rails would be lessening the weight. What are your thoughts? It appears you have the the roof rack set up I have been contemplating in setting up.
Exactly why I did just rails. No need for the rack. I used Alucab rails on the rear 2, and just 80/20 2x1 on the front only because the alucab only needs the rear 2 and doesn’t mount at the front. For any other setup, I’d do heavy duty rails across all 3 spots. A believe front runner cross rails will work too from what I had researched. I cut mine to length to fit right.
The roof console looks pretty sweet, but the ones I see available says it’s meant for 2010-2014 models onwards. Did you have to do any finagling to get the outback to fit? Also, any tips on a specific build I have in mind? I’m planning on going to paramedic school soon, and the way it goes is that typically I’ll have to go to rural areas to gain seniority before being able to get positions closer in, and when I do go to the city, my main concern is the types of people that would break into your car for two quarters in the console, so I’d like something that’s somewhat discreet. tl;dr: something between overlander and stealth camper would probably suit me best. Any ideas where I should start?
It’s because the instructions are meant for the 2010+ models, the wiring colors are different. There’s no other difference. So they will install easily into older Fjs, you just need to know how to use a test light to install it. For the rest of your question, I’d be looking into a pickup with a quality aluminum topper. One that can lock up, so you don’t have to worry as much about a smash and grab. I’m always worried about my Fj getting broken into in cities, my next vehicle will be designed so I don’t have to worry quite as much.
Heya, what is the size/name for the switches that go into the switch panel on the fj. I know if i just buy rockers online they're usually the right size, but i want to custom order a four way momentary switch for a posable and focusable search light. Aming other switches. I just want to make sure i get ones that fit. And no combination of phrases makes google understand what I'm trying to ask.
Do you have spindle gussets? I have a built 5th gen 4runner Trail and I’m thinking about spindle gussets. If not do you think they’re necessary if I’m not doing any crazy rock crawling or heavy off roading? The good thing about those total chaos uniballs or uniballs in general compared to a sealed ball joint is when a uniball starts to go bad they get noisy when your ball joints go bad they break and you’re calling a tow truck. I have total chaos lca’s and my uniballs on them have about 70,000 miles on them roughly and they’re still quiet but I just bought new uniballs to replace them. To maintain the uniballs just spray them with some CRC PTFE dry lube like once a week or so. It only takes about 2 minutes.
I do not have after market gussets, but I’ve wondered if mine are ever so slightly bent from years of abuse. I may end up with some reinforced ones, but I don’t think it’s necessary unless you get pretty wild. I spray my uniballs pretty often. I seem to get 20-25k out of them before they fail, but they aren’t always noisy. Sometimes I don’t notice until my tires are cupping. In colorado it seems like all the dry dirt gets in there and wears them much faster? Not sure, but I seem to go through them quickly.
Interested if you could talk a little bit about how you ran wires from the solar and got them back to the battery. Also did you hardwire your Alucab to the battery? Keen to see how you set up the Manager30 as I’ve just purchased one myself.
I actually cut a hole in my roof and used a Scanstrut product to weather seal the wiring. I have Anderson plugs at the front of my tent so I can quickly unplug the solar and the power to the tent. The wiring runs back to the rear of the vehicle to the BCDC1225D. Through the roof, down the a-pillar and then below plastic door sill to the rear. The Alucab is on its own fused circuit. I am currently editing the Manager 30/RedVision video. I did install that in the camper though, not the Fj.
You are correct. The fitment is fine, the wiring in the directions wasn’t correct though. They changed the coloring which is why they don’t list them as pre 2010 if I remember correctly. I just used a test light to figure it all out and it wasn’t too bad.
Sick setup man, congrats on the build. I do have few questions though, 1) I've been looking hard at the 4rnrs and only recently started considering the FJs as well however I'm a bit worried about space, has that ever been an issue in your experience? 2) I'm looking for a do it all kinda vehicle that can also be a daily, you think a built FJ is good for that or more of a weekend only kind of thing? Lastly if you decide on selling yours what would you be looking for? I'm in Colorado too and just might be interested
1) Space can be a concern. Mine has the rear seats removed so that helps. Fjs are awesome and have their own styling. I travel a lot and now I wish I had the extra space of a 4runner. 2)ive daily driven this Fj for 12 years. I leave everything bolted down usually. It’s been a champ. 3). My wife really doesn’t want me to sell it. So I am unsure for the time being. I’ll probably end up keeping it and buying another toy. Hard to say.
@@IndependenceOverland Thanks for the response your comments are just as helpful as your video, just got a new sub! I think you should keep it too, it's Badass! Definitely 1 of the best off road toys money can buy. For me I'm just trying to think how much would I do hardcore trails vs more general backroad and fireroad touring across the country. 4runner or even a pickup would definitely be better for the latter but I feel like if I really get into trails and rock crawling ima be kicking myself later 😅
The 4runner is basically the same vehicle with a little longer wheel base, I honestly wouldn’t think too far into it. You could also rent one of each for a few days on Outdoorsy and see which is a better fit for you.
I never did a video on the seeming for some reason. It’s an Alucab shadow awn, and it’s been incredible. Lots of options have become available since I purchased this awning that have similar features, but for me I will purchase an Alucab awning again for my next vehicle. They are as solid as a rock.
@@IndependenceOverland I'm Jonesing for it, no doubt. At the moment it looks like I'll be back on terra firma in the first or second week of October. Hoping to get out there while some aspens are still changing and before the snow starts flying. Would you fancy a trip down Baja sometime between then and February?
Not sure about that man. They did tease a smaller off roader at the recent Land Cruiser unveiling, so it’s possible that they have something coming. It’s thought it could possibly be a full electric, though no one knows just yet. I think the 2025 4runner could be their off-roader now but we will have to wait and see.
The wiring is just different, everything else is the same. ARB only states it won’t work due to their instruction manual wiring coloring being valid with the 2010+. I had to use a test light a bit to figure it all out, but it works as it should.
I don’t use an actual roof rack, so I can save weight up top. It’s the RhinoRack backbone and 3 cross rails. The tent only actually requires 2 cross rails, but because of the spacing on the Fj I used t slot aluminum for the front bar that the tent doesn’t actually bolt down to, it just helps support the weight when people are inside.
Hey Cam, this is a PRG snorkel. At the time, it’s was a cost efficient snorkel option that seemed like a good deal. It installed easily, was about 200 bucks, and I thought it was a no brained. Flash forward to today, and the snorkel has a crack in it and they are no longer sold. So I have about 10 holes drilled in the Fj and I’m unsure if other brands mounting points will match up. For this reason, I will only buy big name snorkels for my vehicles. Had I bought an ARB, they would probably warranty it but more importantly I could easily just replace it.
@@ADVdiary Factory Tire size. Toyotas are well known for needing modification to fit larger tires. Even to fit a 33" tire requires a lift and cutting off part of the body mount, as well as new upper control arms. Going to a 35 requires more cutting and hammering pinch welds flat. There's a lot to it, I would recommend joining the Facebook groups for details.

Two quick questions:
@@IndependenceOverland Thanks!!
Do theyvstill salt the roads in Denver or do they use sand
Colorado uses mag chloride across the state. They claim it doesn't cause as much rust.
@@IndependenceOverland Thanks a million for the information! I will definitely do some research on this issue. 🤙
Great stuff! Is your superpro bushings double offset?
I just got the standard ones.
How much does the FJ weigh now?
I'm not totally sure man, but real heavy! That big rear axle is on duty for sure.
how is the propane tank mounted . link ?
Its made by Refined Cycle
fuck yeah bro sick build! just subscribed
Thank you, and thanks for subscribing man! I do appreciate it!
How do you get poly bushings into the lower control arms? Do you have to cut out the old bushings and then press them in?
You can either modify your existing ones or buy them from SuperPro already assembled and ready to go!
CH4x4.com is what your looking for
Do you have spindle gussets?
@@IndependenceOverland thanks for the reply!
I did install that in the camper though, not the Fj.
those are aftermarket seats? which ones?
Those are Scheel-man’s.

how was the install of the arb overhead console? If i remember correctly those werent made to fir the earlier year Fjs
You are correct. The fitment is fine, the wiring in the directions wasn’t correct though. They changed the coloring which is why they don’t list them as pre 2010 if I remember correctly. I just used a test light to figure it all out and it wasn’t too bad.
I have an 07 also, this is the information I was looking for. Now I'm going to order the overhead console.
Sick setup man, congrats on the build. I do have few questions though,
1) I've been looking hard at the 4rnrs and only recently started considering the FJs as well however I'm a bit worried about space, has that ever been an issue in your experience?
What is the rear axle assembly you used ? I understand it was an 80 series , but you mentioned a company -
Yeah it’s just the standard width Diamond. They do offer a wide/full width version.
What kind of awning do you have and do you like it? Any chance you have a video on it? Cheers
I never did a video on the seeming for some reason. It’s an Alucab shadow awn, and it’s been incredible. Lots of options have become available since I purchased this awning that have similar features, but for me I will purchase an Alucab awning again for my next vehicle. They are as solid as a rock.
@@IndependenceOverland Thanks for sharing! They do have great quality products.
Hey, is that some IO merch that I see???? What's a sub gotta do?!
Haha it’s RUclips so...... in the description down below 👇👇👇👇 😀. Thanks for watching Jake! You will have yours back in no time!
T- do u think ‘yota will bring out a new FJ again one day? I’m secretly holding out. It’s my dream. Wat r the chances??
Not sure about that man. They did tease a smaller off roader at the recent Land Cruiser unveiling, so it’s possible that they have something coming. It’s thought it could possibly be a full electric, though no one knows just yet. I think the 2025 4runner could be their off-roader now but we will have to wait and see.
How did you install that ARB overhead console on a pre-2010 model?
The wiring is just different, everything else is the same. ARB only states it won’t work due to their instruction manual wiring coloring being valid with the 2010+. I had to use a test light a bit to figure it all out, but it works as it should.
@@IndependenceOverland Appreciate the feedback! Also I just picked up those same visor molle pouches per this video and they're great quality!
What roof rack holds your aluminum cab
RhinoRack backbone system and 3 cross bars. I skipped the actual platform of the rack since it isn’t necessary with these tents. Saves weight.
Great video again! What mount did you go with for the Rotopax mount? Thanks
Using the Expedition One bumper and mount for that.
Thank you for responding :-) cheers from Canada. I’ll se if i can get it up here.
@@IndependenceOverland and what about your roof rack? Thank you 🙏
I don’t use an actual roof rack, so I can save weight up top. It’s the RhinoRack backbone and 3 cross rails. The tent only actually requires 2 cross rails, but because of the spacing on the Fj I used t slot aluminum for the front bar that the tent doesn’t actually bolt down to, it just helps support the weight when people are inside.
What snorkel is that you're running?
Hey Cam, this is a PRG snorkel. At the time, it’s was a cost efficient snorkel option that seemed like a good deal. It installed easily, was about 200 bucks, and I thought it was a no brained. Flash forward to today, and the snorkel has a crack in it and they are no longer sold. So I have about 10 holes drilled in the Fj and I’m unsure if other brands mounting points will match up. For this reason, I will only buy big name snorkels for my vehicles. Had I bought an ARB, they would probably warranty it but more importantly I could easily just replace it.
what model bearcat CB is that? thanks
It’s the 980. It require trimming of the overhead console.
✌️👍
🙏
Ah, I see on this video that you do not have a left arm rest on the driver seat. I am guessing it wouldn’t fit.🎩🇺🇸
I’m wanting to say it would not, but I didn’t really consider it since the Fj has kind of a built in arm rest on the door.
Is 37’’ tire ok for the Fj cruiser?
Not without a lot of work and money. The easiest bolt on option is portal axles, and after shipping from Ukraine it’s about 17,000.00 USD
@@IndependenceOverland thats a lot of money, what is the maximum tire size that can fit in fj without extra work and money
