How to replace the Thyristor by a Power

I have a very strange battery charger made by carol wire industries back around 1970 or so, it has a ready made bridge rectifier which only supplies DC in the negative... and the automatic side is taken before the bridge in AC ... It's rectified through common components, zener diode, silicon diode ... Etc any way the way it works is it constantly saples to out put at the battery and restricts the supplied amps...
But I need a new transformer and there aren't many used ones around here these days... I might have to make a toroidal.. but the original wasn't marked... It's a center tap and was supposed to supply 6 amps...
Got any ideas on how many wraps of what gauge wire... For each field???

S2-29W resistors would fit in more with the rest of the Soviet components. And if one could still put in Soviet capacitors, or give at least Polish ELWA. The atmosphere would be preserved.
