I love this throw and I hate it. I never mastered it, but I had a nemesis when I was growing up that had this throw down pat. We battled for years in local tournaments and he always got my with Morote Seoi-Nage. I remember, every time he got me on this throw I came up bleeding from somewhere. I finally beat that guy at a tournament in Sac California when we were about 16 years old. I beat him on points and never looked back, but somehow this throw grips still today. Maybe from my nightmares...
I did Judo for about 6 years, 2 of it on and off. Morote seoi nage was my ultimate favourite throw. About 8 years after I quit Judo I started BJJ. It took me about a month to shake off the rust, but now I feel like I can do this throw at will to about 80% of the people I roll/randori. Its an incredible feeling, and an assurance that those 6 years weren't a waste.
Oneshot112 I do bjj and wish i could do judo throws on people better. I can do them pretty well in MMA when people are standing upright for me but can't do them at all in grappling stances
I took Judo for on 10 years. Went to the Kodokan as a young man and grew up only to get to Ikkyu before I left... Seioinage was always the throw that took me off guard.... being much larger than the other kids, I would often use this or have it used against me effectively.... so impressive
What I like about this throw is that it is also inflicts the most damage on the street. When someone gets shoulder thrown it usually doesn't hurt them that bad but it always give them the 'oh my god that hurt I don't wanna get up you win' feeling. But if you do it had enough you can paralyze him, literally give him paralysis.
Imagine all this was done on hard concrete ground, not the cushy padded tatami... definitely a deadly throw! Judo techniques are so simple yet beautiful. Thanks for the video
You can use knee pads as long as its not in tournament. Volleyball pads work nicely. Also doing standing seoi is difficult in competition but not impossible. A lot of people are scared of being countered.
I freaking love this technique. One particular favorite use of it in fiction (comics) that I have seen is in Taskmaster #1 (2002) when the villain uses it against Iron Man - proving that when the technique is used properly, a stronger opponent can still be thrown off his feet.
sode tsurikomigoshi is worse especially when your opponent got both of your sleeves so you got nothing to do the breakfall and landed roughly on your neck/shoulder, plus your opponent decides to makikomi and roll the hell out of you
Unorthodox/Reverse-Seoi-Nage: Both Hands at one sleeve and overtwisting rotation, so that it fast turned to the other side. The shock moment let the partner block backwards and you pull him down out of his balance (5:19 from Ono, 5:51 Nishida)
These are olympic competition seoi-nages for points or ippon. Do this on concrete and both people will get hurt. The original textbook seoi-nage doesn't have you slamming your knees or hitting your head on the ground.
@ Sfking Well the 'drop seoi-nage' was designed for/came from competition. There's a clear distinction between Traditional Judo and 'sport Judo', anyone with a basic knowledge of Judo can tell the difference. I suppose you'd like them to use Atemi-waza to punch and kick on the tatami, as well? Your comment irritates me for its laziness
IpponSeoi Morote Seoi Nage Eri Seoi Nage and Korean Reverse Seoi Nage :3 Seoinage is Te Waza (Hand Techniques) and Tsurikomi Goshi is Koshi Waza (Hip Techniques)
the scary part about the judo seoi-nage is that many good executions leave the thrower in a rear naked or under side control in bjj. beautiful throws but if you land in such a compromised position it isn't worth it.
Trilce this is because in high level of competition, groungwork has a very short time to give it a try, so you are more likely to wim by throwing. also, the base form of the seoi nage leaves the thrower standing, and with control of the thrown's arm and you can follow with an armbar (or a shower of punches, if you are thinking about just a brutal fight). but these guys are so good at NOT getting thrown, you have to resort to more risky moves, but since the throw itsefl lets you win, its worth it. and to finish... Bjj comes from judo, so a judoka tnkows if its worth it or not.
It's a nice throw under judo rules, but in half of these in the video, the thrower ends up in a very unfavourable position on the ground, with his/her back taken by the opponent. Ok, I know it's judo rules, I am just saying that if you did this throw under BJJ or MMA rules, you'd be in serious trouble after the throw.
No, if you get trown by a seoi-nage anywhere else other than a padded floor regardless the angle or position of your body you gonna suffer a serious injury, the modified version of the seoi-nage what you can see in this video whas made with the objective of scoring an ippon, commonly the result of this trow is landing with your face in the ground.
Stael Deros If you rewatch the video, more often than not the head does not touch the ground. AND if it does, most of time it barely touches. Go ahead rewatch it, the opponents are mostly landing on their side or on back. Yeah, a few of the throws would hurt on a solid surface if landing on head. However, the risk of ending in a unfavorable position is not worth the reward. These throws work well in this setting under these rules. In a any other situation, I doubt throwing someone and rolling into a position where opponent is on top of you is a good spot.
That´s because we care about our oponents and would never injure them. That´s why the throw form is modified in order not to fucking cripple the other guy. -_-

Zachary Pridemore Depends what throws, I find it easier with the grips and all
+Zachary Pridemore If you can do it in MMA, then you're doing something right. It is very hard to throw someone with no gi for your grips.
my favorite throw. Fast. effective. difficult to block once it is started and realy beautiful to see.
0:05...I don't know how many times I've watched his legendary ippon-seoi-nage, full somersault...some say that this is the true form of it...
Great compilation and great song choice. Congrats and Thank You for such Masterpiece! Greetings from The Russian Federation.
Best grappling style ever

Three akidokas dead from concussions using this waza. Face planting someone from your shoulder does terrible things.
learned seoi nage on the first judo class I ever had, 1 year past and im still working on that
Nice work. I just love the reverse seoi-nage.
jesus christ i was just marveling at the uchi-mata but this is even more badass. never knew judo was so impressive to watch
My favourite technique also bring more videos like this of an baul and an changrim please please
Imagine all this was done on hard concrete ground, not the cushy padded tatami...
definitely a deadly throw! Judo techniques are so simple yet beautiful.
Thanks for the video
ye but you can injure yourself while doing it because you drop to your knees
I can imagine my knees after doing my favorite seoi nage. One at least.
***** you dont have to drop on your knees
I know that but most of those people did the drop seoi nage and not classic standing seoi nage

Great video with some awesome throws!
Wow 12 minutes of drop seoi - great clip
IMO the seoinage IS judo !! Fantastic throw !!
Nothing is more infuriating than being beaten by a drop seoi nage
Oodelallie why
Coz it's a dick move and you should know better than to fall for it xD
sode tsurikomigoshi is worse especially when your opponent got both of your sleeves so you got nothing to do the breakfall and landed roughly on your neck/shoulder, plus your opponent decides to makikomi and roll the hell out of you

love it! thanks for sharing!

Don't use it in self defence or in a street fight then!

Like someone already said most of these are seoi otoshi, one or both knees on the ground when executing the throw.
aka "drop seoinage"
can someone tell me the fight at 0:47 please??
Huh! If it were me, the victim would fly across the room with seoi nage. Me being the victim of course. LOL
?! da fuck ?
What is the seionage at 4:32 ?

I'm pretty new to Judo, but this Seoi-Nage looks like a first class ticket to head and neck trauma for uke. A little intimidating.
profd65 First lesson for everyone: How to fall :')
Anthony Beable In some cases ukemi wont help, strong bull neck will.
Robert Post Ukemi will always help break your fall and if it doesn't, nothing will.
Most of those that you see are seoi otoshi not seoi nage.
what was the name of the audiotrack

This throw can be performed so that doesn't happen. These guys are just acting according to the rules they're under now.
