Sublime - a lesson to all singers on a perfect legato. The look on Bernstein's face at the end of the aria tells everything.

I played this piece for my son in his first day at our home, after leaving hospital, 2 days after his birth. Watching that little part of me in front of my very eyes, the perfect 'incarnation' of my love for my wife, listening to Mozart, was probably one of the most powerful impressions I will have in my lifetime.

  • @prosdocimo

This is why I LOVE Mozart. This unfinished Mass proves how much he loved Constanze, his beloved wife. This also proves what a great singer she was as it was composed specifically for her voice. Even though the Mass was not finished, she sung it one time in Salzburg when they were visiting family. Mozart was simple a GENIUS!

Semplicemente sublime

Certainly the most accomplished soprano of the higher, lighter Mozart. It's hard to ignore the brilliance of other Mozart sopranos like Carol Vaness and Kiri Te Kanawa, in the full lyric Mozart parts.

Apart from just about the most beautiful soprano voice this world has heard, can't help noticing the absence of affectation, strange facial contortions, as though she is simply speaking to us, just as natural, while producing those incredible vocal gymnastics. I don't know if it means anything at all, but have noticed the same thing in one I'd consider her male equivalent, tenor Jussi Björling.

Even though the vocal quality and beauty is unsurpassed, what makes the performance absolutely unique and deeply moving is in my view the sheer spirituality. Such music to such a text depends on an often undefined spiritual quality to reach a sufficient deep expression. This is an experience never to be forgotten.

Arleen and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson could have been an incredible pair: soprano/mezzo with an amount of musicianship and sensitivity not often found in even the best of singers. It's almost as though they allowed the music to sing itself - they opened their instruments, and what showed forth was ethereal!! We are blessed to live in an age where we don't have to take anyone's word for it - it is there for our ears to hear . . .

@@diomarimontoya Keep working on it! Just because you're not close now, that doesn't mean that you'll never get there. Arleen was about fifty years old when this was recorded, and had the advantage of seven years with the Vienna State Opera at the beginning of her career. She had worked for years with great conductors and coaches. Off hand, I'd say she had a bit of an advantage over you! Don't stop pursuing the dream. Keep singing and keep listening to Arleen. Keep making the comparison and trying different ways to produce the sound you want. We each have a singular voice. You will never sound *exactly* like Arleen. However, if you work long and hard, teaching your voice to do the same things Arleen could do, one of these days you're going to listen to your tape and you'll say to yourself, *Hey, not bad!!* Stay safe and healthy!

Brava Arleen Auger. Mozart would loved to have heard this concert, pure Baroque, voice so well placed and tuned that sometimes it so blended with the winds one couldn't tell which instrument it was, voice flutes, oboes etc. I think that Arleen Auger was the soloist at the wedding of Princess Diana and I was so impressed I tried to find her recording of the Mass. She was careful not to let the consonants interrupt the vocal flow in the phrases. Long phrases without breathing were her meta. Bernstien kept the orchestra in perfect flow and volume. Excellent!

A concertino for wind quartet (flute, oboe, bassoon and voice), and orchestra. Bernstein conducted it that way, and would have had Auger with the trio, if he could have gotten away with it! Unfortunately, having dear Arleen crawl over the fiddles would have been a bit much!!
They were four very sensitive musicians, and they made it sound as though they were all together. It is a glorious rendition of this piece!!

This is some of the most sublime singing that I have ever heard. It's a Master Class in legato, interpretation, simplicity, beauty of tone and full connection to her chest voice across all registers. Pure, unforced, beautiful tones a registrations. What has happened to this kind of singing?
