Sharpies are alcohol based, so they come right off with alcohol. Goo Gone and lighter fluid are good for oil based substances. Nail polish remover is lacquer thinner so keep it away from lacquer finishes. I think you are dealing with a polyester finish so you are OK with nail polish remover, but if you had a lacquer finish it would damage the finish. If you had polyurethane, you have the possibility of making the finish milky. The pick guard is a plastic and lacquer thinner has acetone in it, thus the issue you had. Nice job and love your vids.
Sharpies are not alcohol based But it's slightly soluable in alcohol and acetone. Nail polish remover is mostly acetone which can be used for lacquer not it's also used in many other things. Goo begone had many ingredients in it including acetone. All you have to do is read the labels to find this out.
You know, I've heard some old luthier (I think it may have been a stewmac guy) say that the approach he takes is to use the mildest product that will do the job, and he starts by using his breath to impart a little warmth and moisture when he's cleaning the gunk off the fretboard for example. When I saw goo gone I figured the finish on the guitar was toast. There seem to be two formulations of goo gone, one of which will melt plastic instantly. Luckily you seem to have used the less aggressive of the formulations, or you would likely have taken the clear coat right off along with the permanent marker. Also, most nail polish remover is acetone based and will eat paint and plastic very quickly as you found out with the pick guard.
Lightly Sand the pick guard with some 1500 grit sand paper, then hit it with Novus plastic polish, or Mequires Scratch X to bring back the shine. It will look like new.
No matter what kind of Yamaha it is it is mostly a good instrument, I would put the Pacifica right there with a Squier Strat, maybe even edge the Squier out and I have 2 Squier strats one is O.K but the other one is out standing, but I am really a bass player that can play guitar I am way more particular about my basses. The thing with the Squiers is they are hit and miss with them, one could be a really good guitar and you can get the same series and it will be a piece of junk. Yamaha is more consistent. Believe it or not lighter fluid will take the magic marker off and cleaning the guitar, just don't leave it on, put it on the rag and wipe and quickly with dry rag wipe again.
As far as the alchohol, ventilation. A fan to blow the fumes out the door. Pickguard? Maybe clean rag frequently changed to a new spot so smearing is minimized? Idk. Love the videos. Thank you!
I gigged with a Pacifica a whole yr, my ex wife liked to pawn my fender strats usa cause she could get over 500,such a drag cause we were playing twice a week at clubs and I was bringing home a couple hundred bucks extra on top of my weekly Check from construction.i bought the pacifica knowing she couldn't get 50 bucks for it lol in the end that guitar was better than my usa strats I had, no doubt I am single now gigging rebuilt my gear and guitars I have a affection for pacificas now.
Armor all or maguires makes a product called Plastix. It's great for getting scratches out of plastic and takes the cloudiness out of your cars headlights.
You can use a sharpie to take sharpie off, because it re-wets the ink, but you gotta be quick with wiping it off. An alcohol-soaked rag helps after the initial dry wipedown.
@@micemr76 Try it on something that doesn't matter first, but I have had success on surfaces such as dry erase boards and other glossy finished products, but then, dry erase markers can also be used to remove sharpie ink from dry erase boards
i would suggest zippo or ronsonol lighter fluid as a first choice for a cleaner. it will lift up any sort of dirt or grease or adhesive and it will also remove sharpie really well. it’s also safe on plastics and all finishes. its just the safest option that will pretty much always get the job done. as far as the pick guard plastics go, you could always remove them and scrape them with a razor blade or sand them back a bit and work your way through the grits and then polish everything back up to a gloss.
Love your videos! I learned the hard way not to use nail polish remover on plastic. Goodwill stickers are THE WORST! When I remove stickers from plastic, like CD cases, I peel as much off as I can, then I make a duct tape loop, and I peel it back, Steve Carell 40 Year Old Virgin style to get the glue off, then carefully tap the stickered area until all the remnants are gone. Also, a trick for those stickers, if the surface is durable, and not porous, is to wipe them with a disinfectant wipe. I've used them successfully with things like tripods, mic stands, metal chairs. I would try the duct tape and/or wipes on the pick guard and spring cover, and as long as there's not too much excess liquid, it should work. And if you can't get the pick guard clean, maybe a customer who likes tie dye will buy it!
I would have gone with alcohol first. You could do it outside so the vapors won't affect you as much, or use ethanol, which isn't as overpowering as Isopropyl. Was surprised by the Turtle Wax, though.
would taking some fine sandpaper to it work? Seeing as how some of the finish on the pickguard is already removed, you could give the whole pickguard a matte finish.
1st ive used GHS gbxl strings 9-42. ive used those strings exclusively since 1976. best strings on the market bar none. polish whole guitar with gibson guitar polish you will be surprised at the results. i use nothing but lemon oil on the rosewood finger boards. use it and get wood shiney and let soak in some then wipe off. best thing on the market
It might be the volume and tone controls that are intermittent, as when you moved the pickup selector, there was a little bit of static that came through.
That's a great price I paid twice as much for mine on Facebook marketplace with tax and everything but it was left-handed so they're usually a little bit more
I had a guitar with Sharpie on the pick guard it's hard to get off but if you scrub hard it will come off I didn't even use cleaner on mine I just scrubbed it really hard with a with a towel and it came off all you have to do is use a little bit of elbow grease anyway love your videos can't get enough I'm going to keep on watching and subscribe
Dry erase marker makes sharpie disappear instantly. Just write over the sharpie then wipe off. Comes right off of high lacquer polish, glass, dry erase boards…try it one time and see.
To Dane from Dane, lol. I'm not a chemist but do you think a little bleach might work on the pickguard? You could dilute it a bit and it might not hurt the plastic.
this is the first time Dane has experimented with chemistry PS: Try using some of that 1000 grit sandpaper to just lightly remove some plastic off the pickgaurd, then buff it all out.
I find that electrical contact cleaner works really well also (better than alcohol). Just make sure to use one that is safe on plastics. Most of them are safe on plastics. Nail polish remover IS acetone. 🤣🤣🤣
Best Sharpie ink removal Hack you should ALL know about!!! Write over the sharpie marks with a DRY ERASE White Board Marker, and wipe off. It is as simple as that.
If it was my personal guitar, I would of spray painted matte black over the pickguard. I feel like the sharpie on the pickgaurd kinda just seeped into the plastic.. must be porous ? But great job none the less ! Guitar looks amazing.
Dry erase marker will erase sharpie. You just write over sharpie with dry erase marker then wipe off dry erase sharpie marker comes off with dry eras residue.
Pinesol...best stuff ever to get sharpie off of anything. drew penises on a guy's face that fell asleep in my dorm room in college, pine sol was the only thing to get it off. got it out of clothes , his face, and off of his notebook
I used Goo gone on my mandolin it went through the finish and destroyed the structure of the wood underneath 🤬 WD-40 is the magic answer to all this I bet

I would use Semi Chrome polish.
As a general rule of thumb, I use
For dirt/grime: water or windex
For sticky stuff: goo gone
For ink and other stubborn stuff: 70% IPA
❤❤❤
ENIS has left the building!!!

I still have much of the signatures on the Glarry!
You should have done the old Phil McKnight trick, just draw over the marker with a dry erase marker, wipes right off.
Most people like watching stuff like Pimp My Ride but I love watching Dane resurrect these guitars.
I love it when Dane pimps a guitar.
Pimp my guitar 🎸 👌 lol
who watches pimp my ride in 2022 lol
@@am_i_sam_i_am Not me, but I’m sure there’s a present day version of it running 24/7 on some car channel.

Mr clean magic erasers for the pick guard. Works most of the time.
I agree, but I would only use them on white pickguards, they seem to fade colors, in my experience.
@@Ogrelord5150 ah, good on ya for the tip. I have only used on white so, thanks. You may have prevented me from ruining one down the road.
Nail polish remover is made with acetone
Ronsonol lighter fluid works sometimes, butt be careful with it

Denatured Alcohol works really well for sharpie. Get at any good paint department. Great Channel Bro!!
Maybe sand the guard and back cover with very fine grit.

I have seen people use dry erase markers to take off sharpie. Just draw over it and wipe it off.
I suggest investing in a detail buffer and some high quality polishing compounds. Done right, the pick guard would be gleaming.
Good rescue. I love Strats 🎸 Next time you could try Soft Scrub on the pickguard and tremelo cover. Dave Tucson 🌵
Naphtha may remove the ink on the pick guard
The most satisfying video I have watched all week. Love it!

Remember it’s not what the chemical removes, it’s “is it safe for the surface you are working on”.
