You are correct. There is no "good" method of final disposition. I am a licensed funeral director and embalmer , and I will admit that. For a short time I was considering entombment for myself when the time comes. But its situations like you show here that changed my mind. After a few decades, your family will be gone. And then who is going to care for your mausoleum? No one most likely. It will eventually decay away or get damaged by falling trees or whatever. Then your casketed remains will be left exposed to the elements and people. Even the most well maintained perpetual care cemeteries now will one day become abandoned if time lasts. So I agree with you, as bad as it seems, burial is the best option. But then again, in a hundred years or maybe even less, who is to say that someone won't build a shopping center or highway on your grave or cover it w/ a manmade lake or something? As a funeral director I'll be cremated as was my dad and mum
The Native People's and some in the Midwest offer the more natural, placing body on a high stretcher and allowing nature to recycle the Human Vessel, is more settling to my mind. But the Laws don't allow this.
It is just better than 6ft under dirt.
Burning ... Not an attractive alternative.

It’s just sad about these people who seem to be just forgotten, its great how you guys remember them.
I don't necessarily think they are forgotten. I think, eventually, those who knew the person passed as well.

It is sad that time marches on and people pass leaving no one to tend to the graves. We need to show our children the importance of the graves!
We have a victorian graveyard bringing back to its glory even though no one has relatives any more people can now see the graves to read for their ancestors

My family has a cemetery in Southern Illinois my cousin and her husband are the only two that keep the cemetery looking beautiful. They spend a lot of their time out there mowing cutting trees picking up branches. They work very hard at keeping it so nice. But what scares me is when they're gone who will take over keeping the cemetery so nice . Its sad to think of what will happen to it.

Fascinating video. I am from Colorado, and we never see the internment of steel vaults in a mausoleum. Caskets are always in niches behind a slab, or a few of the very old ones have the coffin visible on a thick slate shelf, or sometimes on a riser. The mausoleums shown looks so much older than the actual date that they were built.
What an interesting old cemetery Leo!!! It concerns me when mausoleums are not taken care of by family or caretakers. They are just left to decay which is horrid. Heather certainly chose the right music to accompany this video. Thank you for the walk through this cemetery.

Myself and my friend are currently trying to clean up a forgotten cemetery from the 1700s. The crypt is not that bad regarding the age I guess. The overgrowth we are cutting is about 7 feet tall. Keep up the good work guys 👍

I grew up in west end where this cemetery is,,, we used to hang out there as teenagers,,,seeing this certainly brings back tons of great memories

Great video. Was just thinking, most people are more or less forgotten within 4 generations, except for records and the memories of the people who knew them, when them people who knew them pass away, that's pretty much it
I like how you were referring to that you were waiting for the robot bodies to come along when you die. I were thinking the same way about myself after I die. It would be mighty nice to at least have my mind to be able to survive and carry on, of some sorts. Thanks for sharing these awesome videos of where those who have departed have come to rest and ( for the most part) have found some peace.

Thanks for the video! Brings back a lot of memories!!! This is in what we called "west end". Fairview is about a couple miles further down the road out of town (Williamson). I use to live in west end. We use to play up there as kids, and of course around Halloween tell ghost stories at these very same mausoleums. I have multiple family members buried there in the 'Family' site. There's a knee wall around the site and about nine members buried there. It's also were I spent two day during the '77 flood you've talked about before. 😲😎

Surely if someone were to put it on there local news the town would clean that vine covered mausoleum up. It’s history and cost someone a lot of money to build at that time. Beautiful cemetery. Love your videos Leo ❤
Western MARYLANDER here! In our small town we have a local cemetery group ! They oversee most of the cementeries in our area! They even give cemetery tours on Heritage Days! I was very happy to find out they also maintain the graves of a number of Union soldiers who were in the Colored troops during the Civil War! RESPECT! Many Union hospitals were located in our town because we are very close to the B&O railroad! Not too far from Gettysburg and Antietam Battlefields! 🌲🌄🌲🇩🇪🇨🇭🇺🇲💙🌊💙🌊💙🌊💙🌊💙🌊🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
When we plan for our funerals, we think about the here and now. But the reality is we do not think about down the years what will happen to our remains. Plus, if you look at the modern crypts, they are almost like tiny homes... but then they also cost like small homes...
What does it matter,it's just the meat suit that you wore,your not there anymore!

I love old cemeteries, visiting them and watching videos made in them. I believe in visiting the people in the cemeteries where their last mortal remains lay. And I definitely do not want to be interred above ground. Great video. Thanks.

Many cemeteries in Europe have mausoleums with open visible windows and doors showing all wood coffins within in various stages of deterioration. Dust to dust.

Another great video Leo😊 sadly these poor souls may be forgotten by mankind, but I assure you God knows each and every one of them 🙏, keep up the good video historical documentation. And also I might want to add those that are open with the steel doors back many years ago for used as receiving vaults, if a person passed away and the ground was frozen solid the coffin will be placed in one of these vaults waiting for the spring thaw then a proper grave would be dug n a normal burial take place, but now in the modern time using mechanical backhoe to dig Graves with they are no longer used but some of them have been converted to be a normal mausoleum, you see this quite a bit in your northern states especially when areas where the ground was freeze so hard you could not dig a grave, the Queen of heaven cemetery just south of Chicago as I recall has six of these that have been converted to normal mausoleum.

They haven't been forgotten per se', the family that knew them is eventually gone as well.
Leo you might want to check these vaults to make sure that they were not originally receiving vaults, back in the days before they had the power equipment to dig Graves year-round in the winter time they had the storage vaults where they would put the coffin at and wait for the springtime then dig the grave. When all of the modern power equipment came available some of the receiving votes were converted into actual family final resting place.

Great video! What I don't get is if the cemetery is kept mowed, why was that mausoleum left to get that bad? Seems like it would be kept up with the rest of the cemetery.

Have you considered calling local churches and seeing if they might have any information? Nice story, makes you realize that we should celebrate every day that we are gifted.
It's probable there are brass plaques affixed to the caskets, tops or ends, indicating the residents. You would need to bring a plumbers pipe camera to put through the bars to read them, and strong flashlight to shine in.

I’ve never understood with cemeteries why the people that maintain the grounds don’t pull up self seeded saplings when they are small instead of allowing them to become giant trees that destroy graves & mausoleums. I guess it’s a case of they won’t do an inch more than they are instructed to do, common sense doesn’t seem to apply. It’s just the same here in the UK. It’s very sad to see all those people in that mausoleum with no name & it will soon be destroyed by either falling trees or their roots.
We will all be forgotten eventually ,Time marches on people come and go, For all the people in the world there’s only very few that will be remembered go down in history not the ordinary folk.

Most of these old graves are forgotten, because there may not be any living
relatives left to look after them. However all these mausoleums need to be cleaned up and fixed up the best one can. I think the City should be responsible for that. For the most part this Cemetery was pretty clean, I have seen far worse ones.
I is nice to remember the dead from old, as well as their ornate stones with their names. It is part of Americas history and should be appreciated. Thank you for the tour of this secret place, I have much appreciated ✝️

The Mr. White had 3 wives in the span of only 9 years, 1921-1930 something very strange about that.
Wow ! Three wives in same Mausoleum?! Wonder if #2 & 3 knew they would be here with the 1st ? Yeah , I guess it doesn't matter. But I never liked the idea of being underground . I am guessing there isn't any family left for that overgrown one , or the family would clear it . Hmm .. I wonder with what looks like two names removed from the Smith one , and being stacked like that . There was a serious family issue and those families took their loved ones out , and just put some Smiths from theirs to here . I can't think of a reason to have names removed otherwise ?!

Makes me wonder if all these peoples’ families are gone or just why they don’t tend to the graves. Maybe someone related will see your video. Sometimes the younger ones don’t even know these older ones they’re related to. Someone dropped the ball somewhere.
I went to Ohio and one brother and 2 sisters went to old graveyards and looked up old family members we never knew. It was a good time but made me think sooner or later we’re all probably gonna be forgotten. Creepy!

That vault is creepy, just dead above ground sitting in the open behind bars. You are in the Halloween creepy mode with this one. Creeps me out. Does it smell weird in there.
Cremation is the best way to keep people from robbing a grave.
Whether it is tomorrow or a thousand years from now, there isn't going to be anything for anyone to take away or damage.
And if you need a monument to proclaim you were here, 50 years after it is made, it may get torn down and never replaced!
So very sad, it's how disrespectful people can be that changed my mind I am being cremated. As my boyfriend was recently His remains are with me. Stay safe Sir & everyone. I have seen things done to graves that made me rethink & to concerter my own morality.
I know a cheap way to clean that crept up.
Buy a couple gallons of Vinegar and 2 large salt and some dish soap. Mix 1 gallon vinegar to 1 cup salt
And a tablespoon of dish soap in a pump sprayer.. this mixture will kill all those weeds grass & vines

Leo, we’re mausoleums a fad of the 30 s or 20 s for the rich? You know your getting old when you can remember people in the grave yard when you grew up or from church or something. Then you think what history they seen and what you yourself has seen!
I'm not sure really, but they still sell them I know that much
So much time, effort and money to inter beloved dead “forever.” Yet when all the family is gone….or moved away…or indeed forgotten “forever”…nature will absorb the tears and restore itself of the minerals and liquid of lives lost…
What folly we have to believe that we will be denoted long once we’ve ceased our breathing. What human silliness to assure ourselves that others will care for the spark of our warm hearts, our very loved ones, after we too have passed on ~

My mom grew up in Williamson still have cousins there (Tanyhill) family
I've spent many summers there
People may live much longer lives in the west than they used to however places like this will still be historic rather than the depository of people with friends and family who loved them.

Those steps or the small wall around the overgrown mausoleum might have a name on it. I've seen those small walls with writing on them before. So just a thought

It would be cool to clean up around that mausoleum . Collect money and volunteers
What would be really neat is if you can buy a very small drone with camera that could fit threw mausoleum gates and fly it inside to see if names are on those metal vaults.
Look on ALL the steps leading to the mausoleum and also look to see if there is very low wall (6 to 8 inches high) around it. Years ago the name of the family was placed on a step, usually the first or last step. Also the concrete vaults in the Smith mausoleum will have the name of the person on the top of the vault.

This is where I found you and Heather, I remember this graveyard, its where I decided to be cremated so my final resting place will be all over, it will be mixed with my Doxie Timmy and sprinkled over my Grandparents , my Mom and Daddys grave and my baby Jessicas grave....to go back to the earth....love your hat Heather, you should wear it ghost hunting....❤❤

I worked for Resthaven in Dallas, Texas. An ample amount of $$$$$ is set aside for perpetual care. Under Texas Law these grounds will be well cared for. If you live in Dallas make pre-need arrangements. Things will be as you wish, you'll save your estate major $$$ and ease t h e tasks of those you knave behind.
As a Williamson native, I really love the videos you have been shooting. It's good to see places that I haven't been in many years.
I spent a good bit of time in Fairview Cemetery as a kid and I remember the overgrown mausoleum was still being maintained at least through the late '80s, so there should be someone still around who knows the family it belongs to. There was never a name or any other kind of marking on the exterior that I remember, as it baffled me why someone would spend the money to construct a mausoleum and be anonymous. The construction style is typical of private mausoleums from the 1900s through the 1920s seen in this part of the country, though the steel vaults in the open is an unusual feature. The only other places I have seen burial containers in the open like this were in Europe. Even though the interior is unfinished, the construction quality indicates it was an expensive project, so it had to have been one of the early prominent families in the area. You might want to look through the door again when the lighting is right and see if there is a plaque on any of the vaults that you could zoom in on to get a name.
A side note - the Smith and Lawson mausoleums were built by members of the Zando family. They were a family of stone masons who originally hailed from Italy and built many of the stone structures in the Williamson area for decades. Some examples of their work are the retaining wall and garage on Fourth Avenue Hill and the large stone structures seen when ascending Goodman Avenue, assuming those are still there. The house I grew up in has a Zando retaining wall in the back. The rectangular stones of varying sizes and thick, projected mortar beds are found in much of their work.

I’m not a fan of these open mausoleums that have the coffins out. At least the are in vaults. Over in Ireland they have just the caskets on “shelves” or just stacked and the caskets are deteriorated and the skeletal remains are there for all to see. I feel aweful for them.
