It's indeed earthly heaven in Bulgaria. Was there couple weeks ago in Central Bulgaria, to do some research for living and business. Food, drinks, cafe, coffee etc, all excellent.

I've noticed that some of the village homes stay within a family for several generations.

In Bulgaria there is no such mobile culoture as elsewehere. so homes stay for generations. they are renovated, extended etc, but they stay as they are inherited.
We are going to make kompots too we have cherries raspberries we also have peaches (my favorite kompot) we just bought a new Kazan where we are going to make them

compost is dung. Compote is fruits in sweetened water. If too little sugar,it tastes watery, too much too sweet. it depends on sweetness of fruits. As children we used to drink the water and leave the fruits to mum to use them in a cake

How did you make the compot? Just 2 spoons of sugar and boil it in the glass for how long please?
2 spoons at half way then 2 spoons once full with strawberries - Boil for 5 - 10 minutes.
