Yeah, it would've been better to limit it at +25% Cloak Drain but that's it. Also make the manual disguise only take 50% of the meter. This would keep it from becoming a straight upgrade but make it a bit less painful to use, at least when combined with a more lenient cloak draining speed.
Another interesting thing about the YER you didn't mention is how it becomes better the better a server is. In pubs a heavy probably won't turn around to a normal backstab so the YER does very little. In places like Uncletopia where people turn around in time from a big earner speedboosted spy backstab on their pocket, the YER does WONDERS. Obviously people might still hear the swing sound (even more often on those types of servers) but it makes chainstabs possible on servers like that where even getting one stab and escaping is really hard with stock. It also enables taking someone out in the backline and not be forced into running away from 2 pyros, a scout and a demo that heard the backstab scream and are looking for a free kill.
@@anonymousthekiller5199 it was pointed out in the video that even when a spy is called out over voice chat, it takes longer to process which teammate is a spy in the heat of the moment if he is using the YER.
Yea I was playing Miami all maps 1 yesterday and dominated as yer spy. But I feel like it still doesn’t have fully silent backstabs. If your volume and sound quality are high enough, you can hear the backstab *stab* and I still catch yer spies out from that noise. That noise and footsteps both hurt spies trying to be sneaky (also pl voice lines about the cart while invis). If they would remove that for spy, I would be happier.
Also, even if somebody goes “spy YER as medic!” in the voice chat, chances are you’re already disguised as the demo he was pocketing. Chaining stabs has the affect of outdating the info teammates might be giving. Very theoretical of course but still! I often find a YER spy disguised as someone else when he’s first called out.
You'd be surprised how often that "theoretical" scenario comes up, at least as far as Pubs go. That happened to me once but because the guy had to TYPE it in text chat, I was already 3 stabs in and was disguised as someone else. By the time they'd figured me out, I killed 2 power classes, a medic, and sapped a bunch of stuff which opened my team up for a huge push.
Holy shit, my favorite TF2 guy, with my favorite spy knife. I can die happy. Literally nothing even compares to the high of assuming someone’s identity moments before their Medic ubercharges them. It’ll only happen once in your entire life, but that’s why you use this knife.
The one moment where you steal their kritzkrieg, turn around and then kill the medic with my revolver. I've done it once, and ooooooooooooh it felt good.
@@2hot34 He probably didn't have a recording device or software running. Most people that aren't RUclipsrs or Streamers don't usually record any of their games.
@@Eye_Of_Odin978 you’d be really surprised in a lot of competitive games (tf2 included) people typically run overlays that come with built in screen recorders like overwolf so they record their games. It’s often pretty fun to share clips with people in your friend group especially in this day and age where friend groups have discord communities.
@@Mantafirefly A friend of mine did this with the YER + Enforcer once, and the medic was below 144 health to boot. We laughed for a solid 5 minutes from how the stars aligned for that shitty loadout to work lmfao
The best thing I love about the YER is that by time their teammate even say "Spy as me" or something along those lines I have already backstabbed someone else making that guessing game even harder.
@Revotry If you're shooting at everything for a bit it's a guessing game unless you're a pyro which is mine sweeping and something you normally do anyway and you would be losing something...Defense, against the spy's team. YER is a good chain stabber because no one knows if there's no screaming and no kill feed.
@Revotry A Spy stabs a guy during a push, that group is fighting other enemies and someone calls out spy during that chaos, you're telling me everyone will stop what they're doing just to kill him? Of course they're not and of course the YER spy ain't no stealth god and will die by the enemies but in most cases he will get a chainstab, kill key targets and run away either by cloaking away or run to the safety of his team or die trying. And yes it is a guessing game because everyone is spinning around guessing who it is and he can kill someone doing that because their back is open, unless a pyro is there but the spy can watch while cloaked, the spy is a ambush class, picking off key targets, Ambushing them from the backline to the front if possible. And yes the spy can act like nothing happened when he's shot but at the same time if he's found out he can still use that to play them, like trickstabbing or shoot them with his revolver which you are underestimating.
One additional piece of advice for the YER: While the screams are silenced, you can still hear a silent "thud" noise from your knife hitting another player. I'm sure this rarely comes into play, but keep it in mind when a group is standing very close together
@@irregularassassin6380 from what I've played, it's a very fun, unique, and good weapon. Remember, if you do use it, use it for traps, not sticky spam, as that arm time can get you killed if you aren't careful. If you're curious, I'd highly recommend watching FishStickOnAStick's video about it.
I've been using the YER for a while now and it is definitely one of Spy's most fun knives, I've even gotten away with using it in advanced competitive games lmao
I remember using the YER and thinking how mistreated it’s been in the community, I love YER so much I’ve given it the full spiffy treatment killstreak and all. It’s the perfect knife for engi nests too as the instant disguise allows you to pick off an engi without alerting the sentry!
And another thing that people tend to miss out on with the Silent Killer. It hides the kill from the kill feed. So those people you stabbed? They won't show up at all to other people meaning you can carry on without anyone batting an eye. It also used to be on the Spy-cicle for some reason but I never figured that out to be fair.
Used to be great on the spycicle. You'd get chain stabs and the leading enemy would eventually turn around and just see a sea of ice statues and be absolutely clueless.
A small tip for YER users: If you look slightly downwards when backstabbing someone, their "cloaking ragdoll" will drop to the ground instead of getting launched forward. It's a miniscule thing but sometimes it could prevent that Phlog Pyro from seeing the disappearing corpse of their pocket Medic, turning around and instantly erasing you from the videogame.
@@HANKSANDY69420 Glad my 2 year old comment about a very specific situation involving a relatively weak and overshadowed weapon for the worst class in the game was of use, haha
0:22 that spy disguised as a sniper is my favorite way of tricking enemies. I just disguise as sniper and pretend that I'm getting a good position to snipe from.
My biggest problem with the YER is simply how I play medic, I'm constantly moving around, ducking and most importantly shooting teammates with the crossbow even when they are right next to me. I even had a text bind to immediately tell my teammates there's a YER spy if I hit him with a bolt
the thing is, with YER, half of the time a spy is called out it ends up that they get many more backstabs and then by the time you say "medic is spy" that spy has already became a pyro, sniper, demoman, soldier, engineer etc. and there's no way anyone on your team would know
I feel that draining cloak to 0% when disguising manually would be better than using 100% cloak meter to disguise. This would mean that you could disguise whenever you wanted to, but you wouldn’t be able to cloak afterwards.
That doesn't work, because a spy can get away at 1% cloak and disguise at no cost. That would make YER a straight upgrade. It requiring full Cloak places a timer on its effect and rewards not abandoning spy chases while also making the cloak sound more penalizing for a Spy player. Get caught out and you're "dead" so you have to "respawn" which helps keep it fair.
This man said Spy a goofy ahh class, I like that you used the word "consistency" often, I agree it's a real strength of this item, as Spy tends to be be a reeeeeally inconsistent class. Another banger video as always sir
Finally, the definitive YER video. Literally perfect. ...though I consider the dilemma of shooting the l'etranger vs keeping your disguise, followed by choosing between a disguise and cloak, to be only a bonus to the tetris-esque playstyle of the YER, rather than a nuisance, but I get it lol it is a pain.
Eh, it's not that I don't like being forced to make smarter choices, it's just that your choices are like a Saw movie's, in that both are gonna require you to do something painful. The punishments for the weapon are just a LITTLE too overtuned and the weapon itself doesn't fully justify them imo. It would work better if they kept the general idea for the YER, but just knocked the increased cloak drain down 25% instead of 33% and made the manual disguise penalty only 50% of your cloak meter instead of all of it. That would keep you from getting on TOO good of a roll with the YER, but also keep it's upsides mostly the same. It would make it less painful to use and incentivize experimentation with your loadout more rather than just riding the Le'tranger (idk how to spell it) the whole time. Keep in mind I'm not the best Spy player, though so maybe I'm just not good enough to harness it's full power and potential.
My favorite loadout for spy is Amby YER and stock inviswatch. Granted, I have 1.5k hours using the YER on top of 2.2k hours on spy. But I find that having a reliable revolver to fall back on if you get a failstab outweighs the extra cloak you get with letranger. Think I'm at almost 100k kills on my YER
When you backstab someone with the YER it still makes the stabbing noise, but the victim doesn't scream in pain. So the sound is a lot more subtle but I often catch spies using this as they stab someone right behind me because I still hear the stabbing noise itself. However, it still is a lot more subtle and if you aren't super close to the kill you probably won't hear it.
I don't main spy, but I f'n love the yer when I want to play around with spy. I even named it "My Beloved Reward". Here's a quick tip for the yer Know who your going to target most, if you mainly target engineers, disguise as pyro or engineer, same with any other class you target, just disguise as those who would be near that class, if you know who you target, you can disguise while in spawn and cloak your way to the class you target
I'd like to point out that since spy can disguise in 1/3 of time faster when already disguised means that if the other is really good at making calls like Medic player: I was backstabbed by the yer Leading to the team shooting down the medic, you can dip out quickly disguise different, then effectively doubling your disguise since you're not only disguised, but also disguised as a class that they are not looking for.
Yeah but that sound is far quieter than a regular backstab, and also just doesn't SOUND like a backstab. If the enemy team is distracted with people attacking, a backstab scream will draw attention, but regular melee hits are way less attention grabbing.
you can completely cheese the cloak loss on disguising if you start cloaking immediately after you disguise. still can't disguise without a full cloak meter though.
playing with the yer and the cloak and dagger from time to time I always felt that something was off and never realized until watching this video how abysmal the cloak time actually is but then again being able to disguise while cloaked is kinda useful with the yer becuase you will blink for a split second and can just regain your cloak
I've always mained the YER whenever I play Spy, and I can say it is amazing. It pairs well with the cloak and dagger, letting you regenerate your cloak while standing still, and go for more aggressive plays with the cloak downside negated. Plus, the l'etranger works wonder with this thing. The cloak and dagger's low cloak time hurts, though.
Bramble Blast/Stickerbush Symphony is an absolute banger of a song Surprising to hear it over a TF2 weapon discussion video But a welcome surprise at that ;)
The YER is indeed very underrated. I have to add that it isn't silent though. There's no scream, but you can still very easily hear the backstab sound itself. Case in point: 10:51. Of course, it is harder to hear (and most people don't, so this is mostly a moot point), but I feel it is important to mention. I haven't been chain-stabbed by the YER in years, and routinely get called out by YER spies for turning around on them.
There should be no stabbing sound also with YER. I can still hear the stab and even turn around with a friendly spy hits his teammate because of that stabbing sound.
I adore The Eternal Reward, but one thing I absolutely hate is how misleading the Silent Killer part is. Enemies can still hear the stab when you backstab an enemy although it's much quieter than a traditional backstab, enemies can still hear it and react if they're close enough. 10:53 is a perfect example of the sniper reacting to the subtle sound. I wish they made it completely 100% silent.
10:06 no idea what you're talking about, half my team could be screaming at the top of their lungs from getting their spines tickled, and the other half won't so much as consider turning around
it makes me so happy to see this. I've been playing YER spy for the past couple of months and it is a delight. It's actually gotten hard to go back to other knives because I keep forgetting I have to disguise after getting stabs lmao
Very nice video. YER is my favorite Spy knife because mainly of the reasons you listed yourself. And you can fool even more people with good acting after you stab. Just shuffling left and right with Sniper fools people like 90% of the time. But, I use Cloak and Dagger a lot. I should learn to use stock more with YER, but CnD helps you stay still longer, especially due to the stock drain rate. Just something I have to learn to do. And we don't talk about Dead Ringer. Or as I like to call it when using YER: "Dead" But another reason I use CnD is a thing you didn't mention on the video which was a bit surprising for me, spawn wallhacks. Maybe it is because I have been playing on Uncletopia sweat servers, but I have gotten killed by people seeing me with the wallhacks or get called when I approach disguised from my team's backlines. Maybe it is Uncletopia specific case, but I have myself quite sharp eye for it after playing Spy a lot. I get depressed when I see enemy Spy decloak with spawn wallhacks close to my team's spawn and I get a free kill off of them. Anyway, gotta switch to invisiwatch and go through CnD withdraval. But if they changed something, I wish they did something like "-10% cloak drain -10% max cloak" if it REALLY has to be a cloak related downside.
YER, the overdose, the Huolong heater, I think there’s quite a few weapons not getting their fair shake because people gotta stick to the nice safe comfort zone. I’m not gonna hold it against em, play whatever makes your experience fun, just wish folks wouldn’t be dismissive about it sometimes, ya know?
I'm still bitter about the 2017 nerf (insane cloak drain). I appreciate your even-handed analysis in this vid... much fairer than the scorched earth take I'm working on for my video. The 2017 update seriously took this from the 2nd best knife (high floor, high ceiling) to easily the worst (lower floor, lower ceiling).
I still remember my favourite moment playing YER+Cloak and Dagger. There was a sentry nest with two engineers in 2fort intel and they were holding on really well. I got there and waited. After defeating another push, the engies decided to high-five. I immediately decloaked and backstabbed both while they were screaming "Help" lmao
Honestly one of the main things that got me to install TF2 in 2013 was both the notion of playing as Spy, and the Your Eternal Reward. You're right in that the inability to disguise meant that you really really had to pick your opportunity, and that made the knife unique (and kinda still does). My old playstyle was YER with the Cloak and Dagger, playing a bit passively until I found the right moment an struck. Though it wasn't always the right moment. But basically the YER is about the closest I ever got to really playing a stealth game in a multiplayer FPS. It felt insanely good to snag that first stab and have it lead into a chain where the enemy doesn't realise what's happening until the 5th or 6th stab. I loved it so much it was not only the first knife I bought outright, but the first strange version I got. We knew about the 2017 changes in advanced but that still didn't lessen the sting. Really what cripples some of my enjoyment of the YER nowadays is entirely the cloak drain penalty. Don't get me wrong, I find the utility of the l'etranger very useful but I agree with your point that now I feel shackled to it to at least somewhat offset that god awful penalty. I know exactly why they added that change too, and it was because of the YER and CnD. The CnD made it a little too easy perhaps to just wait for the right moment. Both the cloak drain penalty and the drain cloak for a disguise came about to make spy players more aggressive with the YER but to me that's not the point of the weapon, not at first. As I said the YER is fantastic for waiting to get that one backstab that'll lead into 7 more, but it seems Valve wanted to put it more in line with the other knives for some reason. To boost play rate? To balance it? I'm not sure. What's funny is I wonder if the cloak drain penalty was also put in to pre-emptively curb what is currently an interesting synergy. With the YER and CnD, you can drain full cloak for a disguise and as long as you're standing still you're only visible for
if you don't see the YER enough then it means it's a very good spy knife :> dude this vid was based as hell, i especially love how you injected your own sense of humor into the script and editing. the video seems more "lively" (for lack of a better term) than your other videos imo. i do feel that the YER is one of those items in tf2 which already has a lot going on under the hood, on top of being on a class like spy being on of the more nuanced and complex classes in arguably all of gaming. it's really nice that you were able to illustrate those nuances and show how exactly they make the knife work and it what situations, something i don't think i've seen anywhere else except in this video and your streams one personal downside i've noticed for the YER, which probably stems from my personal spy playstyle, is that the lack of manual disguising somewhat makes your approach predictable. if you want to be as efficient as possible, your only choices are of medic, scout, and spy disguises, the only disguises which don't slow you down. especially as you need to be more conservative with your cloak, imo your only option as your initial disguise is spy, as it is the only class that looks like it belongs in the midst of your team. if someone is really observant or pissed off at spies they can just shoot at any class whose disguise you frequently use, or at the very least tipped off to your presence. it might not matter much in a setting as chaotic as pubs, and the tradeoff is that , as you mentioned, the YER gives you a buffer after a stab by directing the chaos away from you, but still it may matter in niche situations.
I think one advantage that was glossed over is that you can backstab an Engineer and the Sentry will not pelt you down. Typically if a spy wants to successfully live after taking out a Nest, the Sentry has to be sapped. Sapping anything usually alerts the Engineer and everyone around them immediately and your cover is blown, but being able to take out that loud engie means Sapping will be a lot less obnoxious because you can backstab an Engineer without becoming Undisguised.
Great video, but the letranger cloak on hit is surprisingly useful. Pestering an enemy from long range to get your cloak back is pretty helpful especially with the dr.
I said it on another channel/video about the YER and I will say it here too, the YER is the only knife I think that actually stay's true to the idea of playing a spy, it is THE stealth oriented knife, every other unlockable knife spy has facilitates either his ability to survive/escape tricky situations or his outright killing potential, The YER on the other hand facilitates the spy's ability to fool, trick and manipulate events, info and the enemy team as a whole into his favour.
the best feeling with this knife, soloing a multi engi nest. did this a few games ago, taking out a 3 engi nest solo, allowing the team to cap the payload cart with just seconds on the clock.
Funny thing is, before the YER rework, YER+Cloak and Dagger was one of my favorite loadouts. The nature of Cloak and Dagger's improved stealth capabilities at the cost of a slower playstyle synergized perfectly with the downside of no normal disguise function. The rework killed it, and stopped me from using the weapon entirely, when it was intended to do the opposite for most people. edit: thanks to the 33% cloak drain rate, that is edit2: oh, and Big Earner's rework replaced it. I'm still happy being a speedy boi - i mean, that's what i usually go for in games. I just wish that 33% drain rate wasn't there, so I could have the other option I liked too.
I just love the concept of it, I wanna make an sfm where the team is going on some adventure, then at the end revealing the medic or something has the yer, showing that they were a spy the whole time and the real medic was killed ages ago
I love how the yer and Wanga prick look and want to use them exclusively for their aesthetics. But somehow I completely missed that they let you manually disguise with them. Finally might try and join the five other spies on my team and try and have some fun with it.
The YER is so funny when you’re not disguised, backstab right infront of an enemy that was trying to kill you and then see that same enemy randomly think huh they must’ve disappeared right after the kill. You can see it happen with the pyro at 1:05 but only shoots the spy because he’s been set on fire but if they pyro didn’t shoot he never would’ve known
By far my favorite knife cause of the silent killer and instant disguising and the no kill feed aspect makes it amazing at just making the enemy team slowly disappear on cart.
Took me years to realize that the name of this knife is a reference to that one scene from Disney's Aladdin where Jafar (disguised as an old beggar) attempts to kill the titular character by giving him "his eternal reward" after handing over the magic lamp.
Before my laptop stopped working properly, the YER was my knife of choice. It's fun to use when you get behind the enemy front lines and you manage to backstab someone.
Here’s how I would change it: Disguises no longer cost a full cloak meter, they just empty the meter. This encourages you to disguise when your cloak is low and your about to pick up some ammo. This situation is usually more of a lull in your gameplay, which leans more heavily into that hitman-esque gameplay. You need some peace and quiet to get a disguise thrown together, or you can just steal the clothes off of someone else. Replace the cloak drain rate with an decreased swing speed, enough so that chainstabs on the cart require a bit more thought. And finally, a buff. While deployed, your sounds (footsteps, fall damage, decloak) are muffled. Not as much as the Saharan Spy set, but enough to be noticeable. This lets you move around the back line easier.
It might be difficult to program but it would be sweet if when you backstab someone you take on their exact position and stance while having your old disguise just run off somewhere in a random direction. And this effect should be on the og stats where you need to earn your backstab
After all these years i stuck to the YER because well, you learn to hit n run pretty effectively, you can empty a capture point, get rid of vital targets in a consistent way if you know what to do, it works even against fairly alert players getting away with it more than once, it truly makes it the perfect tool for a stealthy way of playing spy....IF ONLY THAT 33% CLOAK DRAIN DIDN'T EXISTED
13:20 that's true, when I used to play TF2 back in 2020, I managed to make a 4-5 people chainstab and a new person who was playing engineer just built his tele and I stabbed them the moment they turned around, I felt pretty bad after that..
YER, C&D, choose your disguise in spawn and crouch walk everywhere. It was a relief when I found the pistol that adds cloak time but I ran diamond back for the longest time
Using the YER and fooling someone with a disguise feels incredible. It's a very fun weapon that people deem bad but in casual I don't think I feel much of a difference compared to other knives
I agree, it's the best part about the knife, usually the disguise with other knife is just a tool to get the first stab and likely die afterwards With YER you have to act as the class you just stabbed and it's 10 times more satysfying when the enemy happens to turn around without noticing you are a spy
I honestly think the combo of L'Etranger, Y.E.R, & C.a.D is amazing. The L'Etranger negates the cloak drain of the Y.E.R, while the C.a.D allows you to regain cloak while still invis. Fun quirk of the C.a.D, if your standing completely still, with a full cloak bar, and disguise, if you have the Y.E.R equiped, you will remain invisible, and regen your cloak automatically. It will not even do the thing where normally running out of cloak with the C.a.D will cause your invis to flash until it regens or you uncloak. This means you can wait anywhere on the map where players are likely to walk near, pick any disguise, wait for a bit, and drop out of cloak once a player walks by, fully disguised with a full invis watch. This allows you to either pick a new disguise once you get your targets, or cloak away.
one thing with the yer is that the backstab isnt *completely* silent the quiet stab noise is still there which can be noticed if youre paying enough attention to sounds and have the game loud enough + good hearing
My absolute best YER stab was managing to fool a medic and the pyro they were healing just to stab the pyro the moment the medic looked away. The medibeam attached to me, and when the medic looked back a second later, they were none the wiser.
I still play on an extreme difficult bots vs humans server now and then. Back in the before times it was impossible to play spy against them. They would see through disguises, whip around if you got more then one stab and track even when invisible. Then the YER dropped and I think the rapid on kill disguise really made that weapon shine, more so since it did not put anything in the kill feed, which is how I think they reacted. Was fun times and really made me shine on the weapon. Named mine even. The face taker.
I have to mention that YER actually performs very well with cloak and dagger, because of 1 interesting feature: cloak and dagger doesn't automatically turn off when you dont have cloak anymore, so if you are disguising with YER, you can stand still in invis, disguise, and you STILL will be invisible. You dont need to place yourself in danger of having no cloak, because you wont lose cloaking ability after disguise. It is actually really powerful!
The best thing, I think if it is still in the game I'm not sure, is that with the silent-killer trait on it, not only does it not make sound when backstabbing, but I think it also does not send a kill-feed notification about who you killed, making it completely silent in that no one but you and your target know that someone died.
The YER is so satisfying to use on Payload maps. It's such a rush clearing a cart and staying on it for the next guy who comes to push it so you can stab them too. This happens way too often for me surprisingly.
YER Spy? I'll make that MY Spy. And by that I mean his charred corpse will fall onto the ground I claimed with fire. Man a good Pyro makes Spy so much less of a threat.
i very very rarely play spy nowadays, but the yer has always been my favourite spy knife. it just feels super cool to use well. i used to play mannpower a lot with it, being able to backstab someone, take their disguise and use the grappling hook to get around is great cause no one is gonna be like "yep that guys using a grappling hook they must be a spy' when i do play spy, usually i use the big earner these days, but thats mostly because i got a free professional killstreak one once and its my second favourite knife. i feel like both kinda resemble the kunai, but are like, not really f***ing annoying to fight. both give survivability after stabbing - being able to run away with the big earner, and being able to not immediately get found out with the yer
To quote FSoaS about this knife: When you get a sick chainstab, it feels like everything is going according to keikaku. When you’re sucking with it, something got introduced midway through specifically to fuck you over.
Good tutorial, but I feel like we're sleeping on something here. C&D + YER. Lemme explain. 1.You're almost always full when you use c&d, right? 2.Stand still while invisible and behind enemy frontlines, (using c&d, your cloak shouldn't take very long to recharge) 3.Disguise. You will only be visible for a small fraction of a second, because it starts charging immediately. 4.You're already invisible. At this point you can decide to come out from hiding, or just stay invisible. Boom. Eternal Reward's (second) greatest downside, completely negated. Just like that.
thank you so much for bringing up how good the YER is against engies. istg all other tf2bers look over that because it isnt written on the stats but its so good for messing with engies
The YER is the "No Mither" of Spy's arsenal but just like DBD's favorite meme perk, it is incredibly satisfying to get value from when used optimally. Most times you are gimping yourself due to the extra mental juggling you have to do just to make your base kit but the extra options you have due to taking on the challenge are hard to replicate elsewhere. Also, never use the YER with the DR and Enforcer. It is literally the most antithetical loadout in TF2. Everything you do either drains your disguise or your Cloak and it truly proves Spy is a masochistic paradise.
I like how no matter where you stand on the YER, everyone agrees - the 33% extra cloak drain was just mean.
It’s normal if you main YER and never swap. Then that 33% extra feels like over kill. Diamondback, YER, and cloak and dagger. OP.
Yeah, it would've been better to limit it at +25% Cloak Drain but that's it.
Also make the manual disguise only take 50% of the meter. This would keep it from becoming a straight upgrade but make it a bit less painful to use, at least when combined with a more lenient cloak draining speed.
If it was just 100% cloak to disguise that would be fine. But yeah the -33% is SO BRUTAL.
@@delanuma5 that's why I use that combo
I manual disguise in spawn each respawn, no worries about cloak drain from disguise, but the 30% does feel harsh even with cloak and dagger.
But what about just calling them out in chat
@@anonymousthekiller5199 it was pointed out in the video that even when a spy is called out over voice chat, it takes longer to process which teammate is a spy in the heat of the moment if he is using the YER.
Yea I was playing Miami all maps 1 yesterday and dominated as yer spy. But I feel like it still doesn’t have fully silent backstabs. If your volume and sound quality are high enough, you can hear the backstab *stab* and I still catch yer spies out from that noise. Yeah weirdly I found myself getting way higher killstreaks in more competitive games and stuff than just on a 2fort pub
the main reason I use it
Also, even if somebody goes “spy YER as medic!” in the voice chat, chances are you’re already disguised as the demo he was pocketing.

The best thing I love about the YER is that by time their teammate even say "Spy as me" or something along those lines I have already backstabbed someone else making that guessing game even harder.
@Revotry But the problem would be that a spy would be disguised, so turning around and seeing no spy would be another guessing game.
2:44 Hmmm, I wonder who that banana soldier is :)
Felt good to see you in my feed, good video as always my man.

One additional piece of advice for the YER: While the screams are silenced, you can still hear a silent "thud" noise from your knife hitting another player. I'm sure this rarely comes into play, but keep it in mind when a group is standing very close together
Or weapons no longer firing.
Remember: if the weapon requires you to put in effort or change playstyle people are much less likely to use it because they're lazy.

I've been using the YER for a while now and it is definitely one of Spy's most fun knives, I've even gotten away with using it in advanced competitive games lmao
Were there any reactions in the chat?

And then dying when you make a move
@@This-is-not-K exactly :)
This would mean that you could disguise whenever you wanted to, but you wouldn’t be able to cloak afterwards.
what if it was slower recharge rate instead of drain rate as well... I like your idea tho
@@Buglin_Burger7878 just add "prevents cloak recharge for x seconds after disguising"

@@doctorhealsgood5456 yeah, but luckily in most cases it won't be heard due to other noises.
I'm just really glad that someone else gets it. It's not just me
Eh, it's not that I don't like being forced to make smarter choices, it's just that your choices are like a Saw movie's, in that both are gonna require you to do something painful.
@@arlwiss5110 why did you reply to your own comment man
My favorite loadout for spy is Amby YER and stock inviswatch. Granted, I have 1.5k hours using the YER on top of 2.2k hours on spy. But I find that having a reliable revolver to fall back on if you get a failstab outweighs the extra cloak you get with letranger. Think I'm at almost 100k kills on my YER
1:06 I LOVE how the pyro thought he got you and turned around and then back again
Here's a quick tip for the yer
Know who your going to target most, if you mainly target engineers, disguise as pyro or engineer, same with any other class you target, just disguise as those who would be near that class, if you know who you target, you can disguise while in spawn and cloak your way to the class you target
I love how people still making highly detailed videos about the weapons in the 15 years old game.
I'd like to point out that since spy can disguise in 1/3 of time faster when already disguised means that if the other is really good at making calls like
Medic player: I was backstabbed by the yer
Leading to the team shooting down the medic, you can dip out quickly disguise different, then effectively doubling your disguise since you're not only disguised, but also disguised as a class that they are not looking for.
Don't care how "bad" it is, the YER is my favorite knife.
I have 10x the number of kills on my YER compared to any other knife
10:50 The YER isn't silent though. There's no death scream, but there's still the "thk" sound.
Yeah but that sound is far quieter than a regular backstab, and also just doesn't SOUND like a backstab. If the enemy team is distracted with people attacking, a backstab scream will draw attention, but regular melee hits are way less attention grabbing.
that sniper that turned around 🤣
Oh hey we've played on uncletopia, my friend Caffeine was the pyro at 00:40 xD I'm glad you used the clip of them trying to be sneaky
you can completely cheese the cloak loss on disguising if you start cloaking immediately after you disguise. still can't disguise without a full cloak meter though.
playing with the yer and the cloak and dagger from time to time I always felt that something was off and never realized until watching this video how abysmal the cloak time actually is but then again being able to disguise while cloaked is kinda useful with the yer becuase you will blink for a split second and can just regain your cloak
Bramble Blast/Stickerbush Symphony is an absolute banger of a song
Surprising to hear it over a TF2 weapon discussion video
But a welcome surprise at that ;)
The YER is indeed very underrated.
I love how in the end you went from this kind, calm voice into full gamer rage.
That made my day xd
(or uh, I guess night?)
it makes me so happy to see this.
Or as I like to call it when using YER: "Dead"
But another reason I use CnD is a thing you didn't mention on the video which was a bit surprising for me, spawn wallhacks.
But if they changed something, I wish they did something like "-10% cloak drain -10% max cloak" if it REALLY has to be a cloak related downside.
can't believe you got the pyro va just for the 11:46 moment

I’ve definitely noticed from learning Spy that the YER is weirdly consistent. Crazy how much taking away sound does for the Spy.
i don’t know what you did different but i really like the new audio with your voice
With the YER and CnD, you can drain full cloak for a disguise and as long as you're standing still you're only visible for
11:47 i feel for drywall burger, that's such of an emotion that cannot be described otherwise

The Stock footage of the "Enforcer Fan Meetup" gave me a good chuckle. Thank you for this.
Never played TF2 in my life, your videos inspired me looks fun as hell downloading it right now.
if you don't see the YER enough then it means it's a very good spy knife :>
dude this vid was based as hell, i especially love how you injected your own sense of humor into the script and editing. the video seems more "lively" (for lack of a better term) than your other videos imo. i do feel that the YER is one of those items in tf2 which already has a lot going on under the hood, on top of being on a class like spy being on of the more nuanced and complex classes in arguably all of gaming. it's really nice that you were able to illustrate those nuances and show how exactly they make the knife work and it what situations, something i don't think i've seen anywhere else except in this video and your streams
one personal downside i've noticed for the YER, which probably stems from my personal spy playstyle, is that the lack of manual disguising somewhat makes your approach predictable. if you want to be as efficient as possible, your only choices are of medic, scout, and spy disguises, the only disguises which don't slow you down. especially as you need to be more conservative with your cloak, imo your only option as your initial disguise is spy, as it is the only class that looks like it belongs in the midst of your team. if someone is really observant or pissed off at spies they can just shoot at any class whose disguise you frequently use, or at the very least tipped off to your presence. it might not matter much in a setting as chaotic as pubs, and the tradeoff is that , as you mentioned, the YER gives you a buffer after a stab by directing the chaos away from you, but still it may matter in niche situations.
I tried maining this loadout for a month and damn it was extremely fun to play with, really makes you feel like a spy worth the effort tbh
On the topic of "silent killer" you can still hear the "stab" sound just not the scream of the player dying. That is usually what gives it away for me
You could just disguise out of spawn, and by the time you get to the frontlines your cloak will be back and you can go invisible behind enemy lines
Except enemy spies exist and are invisible or disguised by your base. They will clearly see you and can warn their entire team you're coming as X.
Funny thing is, before the YER rework, YER+Cloak and Dagger was one of my favorite loadouts.
The nature of Cloak and Dagger's improved stealth capabilities at the cost of a slower playstyle synergized perfectly with the downside of no normal disguise function.
The rework killed it, and stopped me from using the weapon entirely, when it was intended to do the opposite for most people.
edit: thanks to the 33% cloak drain rate, that is
edit2: oh, and Big Earner's rework replaced it.
This commentary reminds me of old gamefaqs and IGN informative videos. Barely any distractions, just clean and concise commentary. Love it.
By far my favorite knife cause of the silent killer and instant disguising and the no kill feed aspect makes it amazing at just making the enemy team slowly disappear on cart.
I really liked how comprehensive is your material, this was one year ago but I'm pretty sure it will get more and more views. Have fun
Took me years to realize that the name of this knife is a reference to that one scene from Disney's Aladdin where Jafar (disguised as an old beggar) attempts to kill the titular character by giving him "his eternal reward" after handing over the magic lamp.
8:57 that was brutal! I would like to die in real life if I were that poor medic.
Before my laptop stopped working properly, the YER was my knife of choice. It's fun to use when you get behind the enemy front lines and you manage to backstab someone.
Here’s how I would change it:
Disguises no longer cost a full cloak meter, they just empty the meter.
13:20 that's true, when I used to play TF2 back in 2020, I managed to make a 4-5 people chainstab and a new person who was playing engineer just built his tele and I stabbed them the moment they turned around, I felt pretty bad after that..
i simply adore using the yer, dead ringer, and stock revolver... well, wanga prick and party phantom revolver, but still, love it so much!
I loved how pyro was just shaking his head at 9:39.
YER, C&D, choose your disguise in spawn and crouch walk everywhere. It was a relief when I found the pistol that adds cloak time but I ran diamond back for the longest time
i didn't expected that "a mimir" at 3:45 hahahah
Using the YER and fooling someone with a disguise feels incredible. It's a very fun weapon that people deem bad but in casual I don't think I feel much of a difference compared to other knives
I agree, it's the best part about the knife, usually the disguise with other knife is just a tool to get the first stab and likely die afterwards
With YER you have to act as the class you just stabbed and it's 10 times more satysfying when the enemy happens to turn around without noticing you are a spy
This allows you to either pick a new disguise once you get your targets, or cloak away.
one thing with the yer is that the backstab isnt *completely* silent
the quiet stab noise is still there which can be noticed if youre paying enough attention to sounds and have the game loud enough + good hearing
I stg, your editing and script gets better and better with each video
Man a good Pyro makes Spy so much less of a threat.

i very very rarely play spy nowadays, but the yer has always been my favourite spy knife. it just feels super cool to use well. i used to play mannpower a lot with it, being able to backstab someone, take their disguise and use the grappling hook to get around is great cause no one is gonna be like "yep that guys using a grappling hook they must be a spy'
when i do play spy, usually i use the big earner these days, but thats mostly because i got a free professional killstreak one once and its my second favourite knife. i feel like both kinda resemble the kunai, but are like, not really f***ing annoying to fight. both give survivability after stabbing - being able to run away with the big earner, and being able to not immediately get found out with the yer
2.Stand still while invisible and behind enemy frontlines, (using c&d, your cloak shouldn't take very long to recharge)
3.Disguise.
You will only be visible for a small fraction of a second, because it starts charging immediately.
4.You're already invisible. At this point you can decide to come out from hiding, or just stay invisible.
Boom. Eternal Reward's (second) greatest downside, completely negated. Just like that.
This knife is so good at stealth because it forces your enemies to play some mental gymnastics to find out where the spy is leading to easy pickings
thank you so much for bringing up how good the YER is against engies. istg all other tf2bers look over that because it isnt written on the stats but its so good for messing with engies
can't believe you hit me with all that Brawl ost nostalgia
The YER is the "No Mither" of Spy's arsenal but just like DBD's favorite meme perk, it is incredibly satisfying to get value from when used optimally.
Most times you are gimping yourself due to the extra mental juggling you have to do just to make your base kit but the extra options you have due to taking on the challenge are hard to replicate elsewhere.
Also, never use the YER with the DR and Enforcer. It is literally the most antithetical loadout in TF2. Everything you do either drains your disguise or your Cloak and it truly proves Spy is a masochistic paradise.
Great video man, these clips are heaven to watch
