  • In the face of the National Security Law and other types of political crackdown, more and more Hongkongers are opting for immigration, with the UK as one of the top destinations. Fiona and Ah Man, a married couple with two kids, are determined to leave Hong Kong despite being economically challenged. As the number of BN(O) visa applicants surges, acquiring the visa becomes a long and dragging process. Finding their status quo unbearable, the couple decides to leave for the UK as scheduled with travel visas, which do not guarantee their long-term residency. Follow the family of four on their journey of finding a new home and hopes for the next generation.

I can't start imagine how people who've never been to another country decide to immigrate. I hope all the best for them.

The look in their faces when they find out the grass is not greener on the other side. To return to Hong Kong is embarrassing and lose face. So they will suffer in silence for the rest of their lives. Sad. Obviously they didn't think it through when they made the decision. Good luck!

Most of them won't return to HK unless it is the very last resort. On the surface, the reason those BNO-ers gave when they left HK is "lack of freedom". But in reality, most of the families who left have at least one family member who participated in the riots. Usually the breadwinner or the teenage son / daughter. Due to the fear of eventually being identified, charged, and jailed, they have no choice but to flee.

Would they be interested to live in Taiwan? Or, Malaysia?

there are not easy to live in Taiwan or Malaysia for long time or get PR there, they both have very strict immigration policies, and not welcome foreigner moving in.

Okay. Actually, what I knew was that the minimum real estate investment requirement to get a long term residence permit in Malaysia is really high. It's easier to just move to the UK if they were born before 1996. They'll have the UK overseas territory passport and if anyone in the family has it, he/she can sponsor the rest. So, it's a win-win.
