THE COWBOYS! John Wayne's Young Wranglers with Robert Carradine A WORD ON WESTERNS

  • In "The Cowboys" (1972), teenager Robert Carradine made his film debut as one of the young wranglers helping John Wayne drive a herd of cattle to market. Stalked by cattle thieves, the boys meet tragedy on the trail. They begin the drive as schoolboys but return as Cowboys. It's a towering performance by Wayne. Carradine recalls how the young actors all became proficient hands during preparation for the film and what happened when he suggested to Duke what his character should do.

I was around 4 years old when my family went to see that film at the drive-in. Even back then, I already knew who the Duke was and that death scene was shocking. It's one of the most impactful death scenes I'd ever seen in a movie. John Wayne was the best and always will be.

Hallo, I‘m watching movies with John Wayne ..., speeches, interview, etc and believe that he was a wonderful man. My grandmother was born in 1909, therefore I now hard it was to accept the new reality, liberalizm, "freedom" which he spoke about. In that era he just thought and had the right to not accept violent changes in behavior, personal culture ... (like many people today). And today, we throw it it on "dirt"?. It‘s nice that Carradine is very warm about him. I would like to visit California once. Greetings from Vienna.

One of my favorite John Wayne films. He was great in it - classic latter day Duke, and I love that he was willing to work with young Rydell. The young cast and supporting cast are also great, and the film really gets dark at times the further it goes - also due to a classic performance by Bruce Dern.

I asked this nice gentleman of his interactions with The Duke - he responded was of utmost respect and admiration for John Wayne! In my humble opinion when John Wayne passed away, Billy Joel wrote the song "Say Goodbye to Hollywood"!

    • @Nimgimmer1492

When this film came out, Wayne appeared on the Tonight Show to plug it, and had a few of the kids -- the Cowboys -- on as well, all of them in full costume. One of them was Carradine, and when Carson asked the boys what their first impression of Wayne had been, Carradine repled, "Well, he's awful big." Which got a big laugh.
Some years later, Bruce Dern appeared on Carson and was talking about working with the kids on this film. I recall him saying how there were a "lotta mommas" there on the set. He also told Carson that the boys weren't scared of him (Dern) at first, saying things like "Aw, Bruce is all right. He's not that bad."
Soooo . . . during one take when Dern's character is scaring the boys, he grabbed actor Nicholas Beauvy, held the point of his knife to Beauvy's throat, and said, "Boy, if you swallow, you die."
      Scared hell out of Beauvy.

One of the best 70s westerns. Saw it in Newport Beach when it opened. My mom always saw Duke when shopping, but I only saw his son Ethan at the bank (lol) - very quiet, respectful young man. Named my only child Ethan after my fav Duke movie/character in The Searchers. The day Duke died, everybody at work in the tower at Fashion Island went into mourning. And as a military mom, I know the Duke did try to serve in military but was denied for a couple of reasons, so no John Wayne bashing. He really was a wonderful patriotic man.

The first time I saw The Cowboys would have had to have been either on network television or a rented VHS tape, as I don't remember ever going to the movies when I was very young, as there were so many of us and my parents couldn't afford it. But what I do remember is the shock that I felt when John Wayne died in a movie! John Wayne was NEVER supposed to die in a movie! ( I don't think I had seen the Sands of Iwo Jima at the time). This country's been on a long downhill slide since June 11th 1979, these so called "men" in Hollywood today are a joke and a bad example to today's boys, like Mark Wahlberg, throwing money at a woman's organization and then running and hiding under a rock just because he had a finger pointed at him without sticking up for himself or fighting back is not only a bad example to young boys but it also sells out their futures as men, Mark Wahlberg needs to listen to the little speach that John Wayne gives to Bobby Vinton towards the end of The Train Robbers, that pretty much sums it up when it comes to being a man in life.

When this first came out and for a while after, I just adored this movie, but then I couldn't watch it anymore. The ending was so sad, that after a while, I couldn't watch, but the other thing was that I read articles about the animals not being treated well and as an animal lover, that made it unwatchable for me. Still, the story was so well done. Those kids did an excellent job. This was a fun video.

After seeing the film as a kid, I was so excited to see the short lived tv series. As I recall, DeForest Kelly (Star Trek’s Dr. McCoy) was in one of the episodes. The tv series was fine as it could be without John Wayne, but the movie is one I re-watch often.
