  • During my visit @zooantwerpen on 02/02/24, l had a look at the new inhabitants of the former seals water bassin.
It is possible to see the fish at the outdoor window, as well as at the indoor window with a better view underneath the water surface.
8 sturgeon fish (NL- steur) are now swimming there - 3 sub species : Beluga, Russian and Siberian sturgeons.
Do they remind you a bit of sharks? Not surprising at all. Similar to sharks, sturgeons have bone plates and can grow upto a length of several metres. They feed on other fish.
As you might know, the eggs of sturgeon fish are most wanted and expensively sold as caviar. That is one reason all of these sub species are registered as endangered.
Outdoors, l could watch several duck species swimming at the water surface. The bigger European common eider duck (NL - eidereend) and the smaller Chinese merganser ducks (NL -Chinese zaagbekeenden). The latter have pointed beak edges, which helps them catch fish while diving under water. I hope to record a feeding time during another visit.

I love the view of the ducks' legs while they're swimming. So cool!

I did, too! I suddenly realized l could see them moving underneath the water surface and decided to film it. Should have taken more time to record more, in fact, but people got in the way. That bigger brown duck was a female eider duck. The males are black and white. You could spot a few at the back there. I hope to record them on a future visit during a feeding time!
The sturgeon fish swimming is very similar to the way the seals used to swim there, although those got their head out of the water sometimes. The ducks surely bring in some more lively actions.
Thank you for your comment, Emily! 😀👍

Yes, you did. This is just a bit of an extended version. It's a new favourite watching spot for me during zoo visits. I used to love watching the seals there before they were moved to other zoos.
Thank you for your comment, Traci! 😀👍
