@emilyinoregon6967 I know from the past how satisfying it is to see the clothes and the faces. My mother in law used to live along the route of the parade, so we had a good chance watching it pass by each year. Because once on stage, the dancers' faces are too far away. I got me a good seat, row F = 6th row, but still... the distance is too big, and closing up with the camera too much makes it all blurry. Thank you for your comment, Emily. 😀👍

@laurawnphoto My (now ex-) husband was one of the volunteers there helping out from the age of 16 on. After we had met and got married (1986), we visited the festival every year. It had been long since, but this year, l wanted to go once more. I prefer going on Sunday afternoon and not for the evening performances. It used to be in open air, but with the continuous trouble of the unpredictable weather, they have a big tent set up in which the performances take place for a number of years already. Every year, different dance groups/countries and each festival day they perform different dances. Now you know what it is about! 😉😀 Thank you for your comment, Laura. 😀👍

@laurawnphoto Yeah... l guess you know it all too well. 😉😄 So l put that in as a joke. It's kind of frustrating, sometimes, but that's how it goes with animals. No way to know for sure you can get them on photo or video or even just in sight to start with. I've seen a photo of a tiger in Diergaarde Blijdorp in front view and up close. @emilyinoregon6967 First of all : l'm so relieved to read you're getting better, Emily! 😀👍 The red panda was very active! I had never seen that from a red panda! The enclosure is set up with a giant rock formation in the middle, so only the part in front and on one side of that rock is visible to the public. The red panda was running around it, over and over again. So fast, l couldn't even follow it while recording. That's why l only got this one acceptable photo. There are 2 deer in there, and the panda was tapping one of them on a leg, so the deer jumped up. Funny, but also too fast and unpredictable to record it. The photo in close-up of the polar bear was a photographer's dream! Its nose almost touched the window! Thank you for your comment, Emily! 😀👍

@jenniferd.9817 It really was a pleasure walking around. Rotterdam zoo dates from 1857, so there's quite a lot of history behind it. And indeed, a lot of green. As always, l was also interested to see how the enclosures are made. The hyenas could be watched from up on a bridge. That was nice and certainly because they were all active. Dad, mom and 2 youngsters. The dad came from Zoo Planckendael a couple of years ago. It didn't work out with female Luena there, but here in Rotterdam, it did, apparently. The giraffes enclosure was interesting too and you could have a good sight of them inside there as well. Thank you for your extended comment! 😀👍 Indeed, it's sad that Thandie and Vizazi have to grow up without their dad. But as you can see, they make the best of it. Amahoro is a formidable sight, yes. She doesn't stay at the back as much anymore since Matadi died and that's a good thing for her, surely. People who don't know about the family relationship think she's the male and leader. l often correct them and they are astonished knowing about her. Too bad, indeed, she will never be a mom herself. She's still a sweet auntie to the girls.

@swamp5050 it touches my heart thay you mention our beloved Matadi, who sadly passed away almost 9 months ago. I always miss him, whenever I visit his lovely family and still think about him often, just like his others fans. Again, thanx for thinking about him ❤

@@lizzyh458 I too was connected to Matadi because he was brother to Lope at Twycross who has since been moved to a zoo in Paris as he was moving into his silverback stage and he and his father were in conflict. Matadi's mother Ozala is at Twycross along with a younger brother aunt and grandma! 😎

@@lizzyh458 I feel for Shu being alone without his big brother. At least Matadi's family have pretty decent living conditions. Watch a recent video of Oumbi's family at Twycross and was shocked at the overall disrepair and shabby state of their enclosure. I guess Lope got out at the right time but the rest are stuck unfortunately, very sad.

@tracilay4162 The first song by the brass band wasn't really on key, l guess, and it was only a short recording. 🫣😂 I wasn't sure which music to use for this video (reel also on Instagram), but hearing the songs of the band made it obvious to repeat them. I'm never sure if it's a good idea or not to show Dachshunds. l know how much you still miss Daisy, but you miss here anyway and all the time, don't you. I hope you have a sweet memory of her, looking at my photos. It said on the plaque : Wet noses, dirty paws, a kiss, a cuddle, so special. @mmaphilosophy You have noticed it correctly. Amahoro is an Eastern Lowland Gorilla indeed. The only one of the group, who all are Western ones. Amahoro also is one of the few of her subspecies who are still living in a zoo, so there's no breeding programme anymore for them. Amahoro kept her distance from the others when leader Matadi was still amongst them. But she was and is a caring 'auntie' for the 2 girls. Unfortunately, Matadi died some time ago unexpectedly from being infected with viruses, of which he didn't recover. Nothing could be done anymore. Since then, there's some rivalry for the leadership going on between Amahoro and Mayani, the oldest of the 2 other adult females. Thank you for your comment. 😀👍

@emilyinoregon6967 Indeed, the zookeepers do their best to regularly provide new constructions and they also put in a few new puzzle boxes for enrichment purposes. The gorillas are eager to explore everything. I hope it will work out as well. No special treats, sadly. During the daily information chat, the zookeeper just mentioned Vizazi's 4th birthday. He was only throwing some peanuts over de fence. Mayani claimed them all for herself! She even chased off her own daughter Thandie. Seems Mayani is the leader now. Of course, with the oldest offspring, she's highest in rang. Amahoro is bigger and stronger, and she sometimes challenges Mayani, but she's from another subspecies. I guess that is also something all the gorillas are aware of. Yes, as a surprise for their 1st birthday, Whisker and his sisters Waka and Winta the zookeepers got them 3 papier maché animals : a zebra, an antelope, and the giraffe was conquered as the last one. The zoo had announced the birthday party, so a lot of fans and visitors gathered to watch it. That was so much fun! This year, I went to the zoo on the 17th on purpose, hoping the zookeepers would have prepared a surprise for Whisker, but nothing to be seen. Apparently, they just forgot about him! Not even a post on Instagram about it. Too bad, but at least l got to see him and his family. Because of his valuable genes, papa Nestor was moved to Bellewaerde Park, located on the other side of Flanders. He was supposed to mate with 2 newly arrived lionesses. Sadly, the meeting with lioness Maya went all wrong and he killed her. At first, all went well, but then suddenly his attitude changed and nothing could be done to save Maya. It was an unfortunate event that happens more often at zoos. Nobody knows how things will progress with the other lioness. In any case, Nestor can't come back to Zoo Antwerpen. Last week was a post about the birthday of an African buffalo that was born at Zoo Antwerpen. Well, so was Whisker, right. I find it really sad he was forgotten! 🦁☹️

The camels are one of those animals that usually don't get much attention from the public. People just walk on by. Hi Sophie, thank you for your comment! Wow, that must have been an amazing experience! I don't know any zookeepers personally. I just like to follow the gorillas and make videos about them. You can find several other more recent ones on my video list. Leader of the gorilla group, Matadi, died some time ago. So now there are only females. Amahoro is from another subspecies than the other ones, Mayani and daughter Thandie (2018), and Mambele and daughter Vizazi (2020). Amahoro has always been a caring and appreciated 'auntie' for the gorilla girls. As you would notice in the videos, Amahoro always kept her distance, but since Matadi died, the zookeepers recognize signs that Amahoro is ready to become leader of the group. She is the oldest and biggest gorilla.

I got more than l hoped for. 😄👍lt wasn't just one nest. Those were really 3 different mama ducks with their ducklings. A lot of visitors were also recording and taking photos. They really are so cute!

The enclosure of the camels reaches out to both the entrance and the exit of the path leading through the continent Asia section, so l passed it several times on my tour. And consequently, l got the opportunity of filming her at several moments of the day. 😀👍 As a lot of animals that are possible preys, baby camels are up and about just hours after being born. Despite her unfortunate start, Zanna has become a healthy and playful animal, as you could witness. 😄🥰 Thank you for your comment, Emily! 🤗👍

I do too! That was my plan that day : to see and record as many of the recently born baby animals at ZooPlanckendael. Lion cubs Yade and Yarzar, baby black lemur (it turned out to be a girl again and she was named Zuri), and baby camel Zanna . I wanted to spot the newest baby hyena pup Zahara as well but she wasn't outside. Video about the baby crested macaque is coming soon. Thank you for your comment! 😀👍

As you would have heard, a volunteer was keen to share information. In Dutch and in English... all normal here in Flanders! Even French and German, if necessary. He was saying that the zookeepers had watched the baby jumping around by itself already. The lemurs mostly eat vegetables and greens from the garden and flowers. I was really early, so the family was still half asleep together. About 20 minutes later, they started moving, and the baby appeared. Papa Oreo keeps more to himself. Please read my reply to Terri Jo. Thanks! Imagine that whole herd in the much smaller enclosure in Zoo Antwerpen! At the time of Kai-Mook's birth, there were even more. Matriarch Dumbo died a few years ago. She was 40 years old and the only one coming from the wild as a youngster, so many years ago. I don't know the one from the other well enough, to be honest. And then certainly not from afar and outside. The daughters are already quite big meanwhile. It was easier when they were still younger. But l'm pretty sure it was Kai-Mook giving her daughter Tun Kai a push @3:36 😆😂 Kai-Mook is the biggest cow, and she has short tusks, but those are not always visible. I could only see that when l watched my original videoclip in close-up. The cow to the right is May Tagu, Kai-Mook's half-sister, recognizable by her crooked tail. She also has a daughter, Suki. But l didn't want to miss the opportunity to see Kai-Mook and the other elephants. This was recorded on Tuesday 14th because l couldn't make it on the 17th. Kai-Mook got a surprise treat on her birthday. I follow both zoos on Instagram and they both reported about it. They don't forget 'our' Kai-Mook's birthday, and the fans don't either! 😄👍

Thank you. It's the birds who are so amazing. I'm only recording. 😉😅 Afterwards, watching the videoclips, l had a chuckle how Gust stood still and watched me - or probably the phone - for a while. He's not afraid of people. (and I'm not afraid of him 😉) In fact, that last time, he pushed my leg aside to get the meat. 😄 l gave the zookeeper a thumbs up for throwing the piece so close to me, so he kept on doing it and even closer. The zookeeper who was commenting did the same on the other side, and the people there were enthusiastic as well, even the young children.

To my regret, bald eagle named Wiske wasn't part of the show this time. In 2022, she was 15 years old, so l'm not sure she is still alive.
