This is great ! I 'm a musician of several instruments but unfortunately, Fiddle or Violin is not one of them. I recently purchased a violin for our daughter and the Biggest problem she has right from the start is trying to figure out how to hold the bow properly. I'm hoping (and confident) that this and many of your "how to" videos will greatly benefit her. I will pass these on to her as well as keeping you posted ! Thanks ! :)

I just started violin lessons. I am surprised to realize how weak my (and a little uncoordinated) my fingers are! Your up and down the bow exercise is really helpful. Thank you!

Hi chasetheworld novelli- There are basically two major types to hold the bow. Old Russian way of holding the bow (my old way, caused me to have tension problems) I find this new way of holding the bow more balanced and more natural. It does effect the sound production and overall balance :D

Actually, if you touch the horse hair on the bow, it makes it oily. Don't touch it!!

What if I make a little pit for little finger. It stays better in place?
I play classical guitar and just beginning violin basics. Left hand is easy for me but bow feels strange. Even now I realised that violin is very fast playing instrument.
I can play much faster than ever with guitar.
    Thanks for these instructions.

kipponi Yes, some students do create a little pit/ sticker to keep the little finger in place. Thanks for your comments :)

I think she means five times, twice a day for these exercises. Is that correct?

My teacher insists I hold the bow like you have shown except with the middle joint of the ring finger and middle finger with curved thumb as you have shown, but also with no space between the two ring and middle fingers--tightly held together, is this correct? I find it very uncomfortable, your demonstration is much more relaxed. I like your exercises too. Very smart technique.
