  • Styrofoam is one of the most popular sculpting mediums for the props artisan. I filmed myself as I made a small sculpted piece out of foam, showing the steps I took and the tools I used. This is a companion video to my book, The Prop Building Guidebook, which you can learn more about at www.propbuildin...

You can also get sheets of home insulation foam (usually blue or pink) at big box home improvement stores like Lowes or Home Depot. Though the thickest they carry is usually 2 inches, you can layer several pieces together with contact cement or Gorilla Glue to make a thicker block.

Nice , Thank you . I'm going to be attempting a large dragon head and partial neck wall mount so it will mount like a trophy on the wall . But i really didn't want to resort to any of those heat cutting tools . So thanks again , this helped a lot :)

Do an internet or yellow pages search for suppliers in your area, because shipping of large foam is incredibly expensive. Besides foam and sculpture suppliers, you can try boat dock dealers, or large construction companies who do a lot of concrete and cement work (They use large blocks as filler). Art Depts at local universities may also know of local suppliers. "Universal Foam Products" (Google it for their website) sells large blocks, but have a $250 minimum order.

Very informative video. I'm a sculptor and I usually work in 4'-6' tall pieces. Where can I find larger blocks of styrofoam or polystyrene? I've checked online but all I can find are sheets or much smaller blocks. Thanks.

Can you recommend anywhere to get larger, solid pieces of styrofoam? The cheapest I can find is over $100 for a 2' cube, which is WAY over my budget!
I'm looking to make two cow skull-inspired masks and I need something to use as a base, so foam has been my first thought. It just seems so hard to find in large, solid pieces.
