The King of the Fighter Jets from the early 70's to around the turn of the millennium. A striking aircraft that was truely a menacing sight head on in flight. I know from experience. Robust, highly manuvorable with an impressive payload makes it into my top five aircraft of all time.

I had this movie vhs before I got Top Gun Aces documentary, and I still couldn't believe what the F-14 was really capable of. 30:49 The PHAA, was also seen Top Gun: Maverick.
I grew up next to Grumman in Calverton NY these and AE6 flew over us testing since I was a kid in 1970s First test aircraft crashed near our home in Riverhead NY. Half my family worked at Grumman facility. Now an abandoned lumber yard . Thank you for excellent channel 👍

But with different variants to accommodate the needs for each branch of military. Like how the F35 A,B,C ‘s are designed and & manufactured today for the different applications. I remember when I was younger “17-18 “one of my friends dads was telling his son and I about how they made variations for different branches of the military. Can you please educate me why the Tomcats were only flown by the Navy? Asking seriously cause I feel like a fool now that I’ve people that it was flown by different military branches. @@chrisklatter3490 there have been Air Force and Marine Corps Pilots that did fly the Tomcat but that was only part of the military exchange flying program how much is like the program that the US military still does now. It was only for the Navy because the Navy rejected the F-111 B for being in their aircraft. The F-111 B was supposed to be for all of the branches but it was way too heavy for the Navy so that's why the Navy got its own aircraft that turned out to be an F-14 Tomcat

New videos about aviation don’t hold a candle to Discovery Wings and Great Fighting Jets docuseries from the 80’s and 90’s. For starters, they got all their facts right and even managed to show footage of the actual aircraft they were featuring, not something else.

People have no clue how Carriers work. There always within land based support elements. So attacking one is hard. As the United States has 4 ways to defend them. Land, Sea, Air and Under the Ocean..
This makes me think of the F-35. When I joined the Navy, many thought the F-14 was an overpriced, useless mess. I can't say that the F-35 will become a great plane, but I have seen this negative movie before.
What's funny is that the F14s (using today's dollar) was massively more expensive than the, F35s are and so many say how the F35s are over priced ha. The F14 was even more expensive than the F22s. Lol. Also, the F14 ended up needing 50 hours of Maintenance per flight hour ha.

But you were right - it was VERY expensive, and had serious problems early on - like underpowered engines that made it vulnerable to flat spins, as shown in Top Gun. But in the end, it may have been the most formidable aircraft we ever built - at least for its time.
The USAF wanted a plane with tandem ejection seats and external weapons carriage. The USN demanded a plane with side-by-side seating, an escape capsule instead of ejection seats and internal weapons carriage. It all made the plane so much bigger and heavier that the USN had an excuse to drop the F-111 - and the USAF ended up with a plane designed to USN specifications, while the USN bought a plane designed to USAF specifications, namely the F-14.

Incorrect. U.S. F-14s shot down a total of four Libyan Air Force fighter jets and one Iraqi helicopter. It's pretty hard to achieve a lot of air-to-air victories when nobody wants to fight you. Iranian pilots had a ton of success in the Tomcat during the Iran/Iraq war claiming well over 100 kills. So get your facts straight, guy.
I only have two reservations about the size of the American carrier fleet and individual carriers, firstly the old adage “the bigger a target the easier it is to hit”, the technology used by Second World War submarines and surface vessels gave every side an equal chance of success and/or survival, however, today’s technology in my opinion favours submarines and aircraft with standoff weapons capabilities making Aircraft carriers a more susceptible target, even with the defensive weapons that they carry, and secondly if an enemy wants to target a whole Carrier Battle Group then a small tactical nuke could ruin someone’s day very easily. Don’t take my comment as being anti aircraft carrier, far from it, as the geopolitical situation stands the carrier group is the easiest and most efficient way to project the military power of the United States 🇺🇸 and NATO/Allied forces on would be protagonists, but should it come down too a global conflict the carriers, of whatever nation or alliance would be very close, if not top of the target list. I am glad that the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 has now got the carriers we so needed, being a small nation with a limited defence budget I am proud that we are able to provide the allied nations with another carrier born force. The F-14 Tomcat and the F-4 Phantom are my all time favourite carrier aircraft, they both project a rugged appearance and a “take me on if you want your butt kicking” aura, it would have been, in my opinion, a real bonus if the F-15 Eagle 🦅 had been carrier op capable as well, but maybe the F-35 Lightning and the F-18 Hornet will be all the United States will need to have onboard, and the F-35 might cover the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 carrier needs but I seriously doubt it, what else we put onboard would be anyone’s guess but until we reintegrate “cats n traps” into our vessels we have little to no option but to make best use of the F-35, personally I found the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defence decision to use the “ski ramp” approach very very shortsighted and potentially an Achilles heel, our carriers would have been better served with “cats n traps” and would have been more flexible in the types of aircraft that we could have had onboard or as a alternate landing platform for other countries carrier aircraft. If I remember correctly wasn’t it McNamara who came up with the idea of having a single aircraft type for the U.S.N & U.S.A.F and foisted the F-111 on the Navy?, I think it was because the Vietnam war was costing so much money that, as the “Bean-Counter” he was he thought that having one aircraft type would mean the commonality of components would mean a lower maintenance cost and a lesser R&D budget requirement, but oh how wrong he was, in terms of aircraft it isn’t a “once size fits all” scenario that would work.
I've read that when the, F14 doesn't have any, bombs, missiles and racks under the fuselage, the undercarriage area of the F14, makes up for 50% of its lift. When the F14 has bombs, missiles and racks under it, the undercarriage lift is, 35%. Which is still good, in my opinion. What does anyone else think, if this information I've read is correct?
Random question-any chance you can upload all 5 seasons of the Apocalypse World War series that covers both world wars? You can only find 5 of the 6 episodes for Apocalypse: The Second World War (which I believe is season 1) and you can only find 3 episodes of the 6 for Apocalypse: The First World War (which I believe is season 2, but not sure). There were three more seasons of Apocalypse, but I’m not clear what wars they covered. I believe it was all WW2. These are on the Science Channel, which I believe is owned by Paramount, but nobody has that channel these days as everyone is on streaming services and RUclips!Thanks in advance if you can do this! The F14 Tomcat was the coolest looking fighter jet. I’m sure the Top Gun movie helped in this. Are they all retired by the US? Any other countries still flying them?
Iran was the only other country to get them. Yes they still fly them. That’s the reason all were destroyed or made inoperable. All spare parts were also destroyed.
Soviet strategists didn't build large carriers for two reasons. 1. The Soviet Union didn't have the money to build large carriers. 2. The Soviets knew it would just be a bigger target for the American's to put to rest on the ocean floor.
Another reason is that they didn't have different states and interests to support the same way the US did. They had Cuba and others, sure, but these were relatively few by comparison to the US trying to have naval fleet coverage everywhere and anywhere with a few days sailing. The USSR didn't need to do that.

The music is a huge signature part of these documentaries. In fact, I am working on my own aviation documentary and I already have most of the exact same music ready to go. There is no way I would make my video without this music. It is the only way to do it right, exactly like they did in 1988.

The F-14 Tomcat and the F-4 Phantom are my all time favourite carrier aircraft, they both project a rugged appearance and a “take me on if you want your butt kicking” aura, it would have been, in my opinion, a real bonus if the F-15 Eagle 🦅 had been carrier op capable as well, but maybe the F-35 Lightning and the F-18 Hornet will be all the United States will need to have onboard, and the F-35 might cover the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 carrier needs but I seriously doubt it, what else we put onboard would be anyone’s guess but until we reintegrate “cats n traps” into our vessels we have little to no option but to make best use of the F-35, personally I found the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defence decision to use the “ski ramp” approach very very shortsighted and potentially an Achilles heel, our carriers would have been better served with “cats n traps” and would have been more flexible in the types of aircraft that we could have had onboard or as a alternate landing platform for other countries carrier aircraft.
If I remember correctly wasn’t it McNamara who came up with the idea of having a single aircraft type for the U.S.N & U.S.A.F and foisted the F-111 on the Navy?, I think it was because the Vietnam war was costing so much money that, as the “Bean-Counter” he was he thought that having one aircraft type would mean the commonality of components would mean a lower maintenance cost and a lesser R&D budget requirement, but oh how wrong he was, in terms of aircraft it isn’t a “once size fits all” scenario that would work.

I've read that when the, F14 doesn't have any, bombs, missiles and racks under the fuselage, the undercarriage area of the F14, makes up for 50% of its lift. When the F14 has bombs, missiles and racks under it, the undercarriage lift is, 35%. Which is still good, in my opinion. What does anyone else think, if this information I've read is correct?

Random question-any chance you can upload all 5 seasons of the Apocalypse World War series that covers both world wars? You can only find 5 of the 6 episodes for Apocalypse: The Second World War (which I believe is season 1) and you can only find 3 episodes of the 6 for Apocalypse: The First World War (which I believe is season 2, but not sure). There were three more seasons of Apocalypse, but I’m not clear what wars they covered. I believe it was all WW2. These are on the Science Channel, which I believe is owned by Paramount, but nobody has that channel these days as everyone is on streaming services and RUclips!Thanks in advance if you can do this! Iran was the only other country to get them. Yes they still fly them. That’s the reason all were destroyed or made inoperable. All spare parts were also destroyed.

Soviet strategists didn't build large carriers for two reasons. 1. The Soviet Union didn't have the money to build large carriers. 2. The Soviets knew it would just be a bigger target for the American's to put to rest on the ocean floor.
Another reason is that they didn't have different states and interests to support the same way the US did. They had Cuba and others, sure, but these were relatively few by comparison to the US trying to have naval fleet coverage everywhere and anywhere with a few days sailing. The USSR didn't need to do that.

The music is a huge signature part of these documentaries. In fact, I am working on my own aviation documentary and I already have most of the exact same music ready to go. There is no way I would make my video without this music. It is the only way to do it right, exactly like they did in 1988.
