Absolute perfection in direction and cinematography. This scene was the highlight of the movie for me. The Criterion restoration DVD is stunning. Martin Scorsese had a large hand in making it happen. Great extras, highly recommend.
This is a great scene in a great movie, but I really think that the Swiss military attache steals the scene. Watch how, as he referees the duels, he seems to physicality become a part of the duel once it starts.
From a search, no one knows - it might be the guy's initials, T d'A F: "The best suggestion is that it's Baby-Face's initials, something like "Theodore d'Arcy Fitzroy"."
"I wish I'd brought my uniform."
Great scene from a unique film.

How are you with a sabre?
Oh, I dunno. I know which end to hold.
Thanks for this.
That Swedish attache guy was one of the best small roles in the film

Ah he was the Swedish Military Attache not Swiss.
Talk about old school ASMR.
Im curious of the function of the two men with swords one to each side. They followed the two fighters
Terrific movie, but the slowest moving swordfight in history. Every time I see it I wonder why they shot it that way.
Probably wanted to emphasise that neither of them really wanted to hurt the other, merely fulfilling the duty they had been called upon to perform.
What kind of word did Mr Fitzroy write on the window in 6:26?
