  • Best quality version - Kenneth Branagh playing Henry V recites the famous 'Band of Brothers' speech from William Shakespeare's 'Henry V'.
    If you liked this, please buy the DVD.
    Every Englishman should know these lines:
    We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.
    For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
    Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
    This day shall gentle his condition;
    And gentlemen in England now a-bed
    Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
    And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
    That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

      I told my 8 yr old son about this on XMAS eve last year - and what it meant to me. I recited the bits I could remember in a playground before we went to church..
      This evening he started saying ""we few, we happy few.." he managed a few lines of it, to my surprise. My gloomy mood evaporated, and we dropped by to see this video :)

      Matt D I was 10years when My dad was in the process of becoming a teacher and he would make me write book reports when I got into trouble.I use to hate it; but he got to practice grading/teaching.
      When I’m having random conversations about history or literature,people ask me how are you so well informed or know a lot about a particular period? I just tell them I use to get into a lot of trouble growing up lol!
      It’s amazing how simple tasks our parents enforced as kids as punishment end up being memorable life shaping experiences.

    What’s he that wishes so?
    My cousin, Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;
    If we are mark’d to die, we are enow
    To do our country loss; and if to live,
    The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
    God’s will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
    Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
    That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
    Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
    And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
    We would not die in that man’s company
    That fears his fellowship to die with us.
    This day is call’d the feast of Crispian.
    He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
    Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam’d,
    And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
    He that shall live this day, and see old age,
    Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
    And say “To-morrow is Saint Crispian.”
    Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
    And say “These wounds I had on Crispian’s day.”
    Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
    But he’ll remember, with advantages,
    What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
    Familiar in his mouth as household words-
    Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
    Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
    Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb’red.
    This story shall the good man teach his son;
    And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
    From this day to the ending of the world,
    But we in it shall be remembered-
    We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
    For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
    Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
    This day shall gentle his condition;
    And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
    Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,

    This all said, there is no person on this planet capable of vocalisation without an 'accent', and, even at the point of colonisation where several sub-dialects of English became the common idiolect of American-tongue, these were merely aspects of English Accents, rather than 'the core', if only because there never has been a single vent in which English was spoken.

    When I received my 5th Covid vaccine (one of the first tranche, being in a priority category), I remarked to a friend that I was one of the few who'd had five already. He said "We few, we happy few .... Then shall he strip his sleeve!"

    How anyone can listen to Branagh's exaggerated stressing without comment, beats me. A quality actor needs no stress. The words speak for themselves.

    It must be frightening for an English actor to take of this part/speech after Oliver set the gold standard during worse crisis than Agincourt in English history, WW2. You have to be very brave to attempt it.

    The battle was really won by the Welsh archers who fought for the English against the French. They fired 70,000 arrows in the first three minutes of the battle which decimated the French. This was stated by Philip Warner who was senior lecturer at The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

      English Yeomen by this point in history. The welsh may have invented the longbow but the English made it a system of professional war. This war was a war between the first prototype of professional soldiers and the height of Feudal soldiery. There obviously were Welsh soldiers fighting but the majority were professional English Men at arms and Yeomanry Longbowmen. I hold a Phd specifically on this period of History, though granted my emphasis was more to do with the politics of the bloodlines than the fighting itself.
