Barzini never wanted anything to do with a "commission". He still carried the old Sicilian belief that ruling all NYC as the "Capo di Tutti Capi" was the only legitimate expression of Cosa Nostra. The Solozzo Affair was his final gambit to enact this. He waited until Vito Corleone grew old and complacent, and then he manipulated Virgil Solozzo and the Tattaglias into a war that would undo the peace just so he could label the Commission a failure, and return to the old ways. Thus, absorbing the remains and re-ordering everyone in it into his new Barzini empire as the Boss of Bosses once and for all. He gave himself away at the Commission meeting where peace was made between the Tattaglias and Corleones by placing himself at the head of the table during the opening remarks. That's a no-no in Cosa Nostra. Commission meetings are supposed to be held at roundtables to symbolize everyone having equal input. Being the head of the table was what the old timers from Sicily fought over. No. A lot of their rackets are no longer viable. To remain as powerful they'd have to become tech savvy. Wiseguys barely finish high school. Their time passed. There are new criminals now.
Vito made the right choice by saying "No" to Sollozo at first. After Sonny's murder and the need to bring Michael back home arise, the politicians who support Vito Corleone won't stand against him saying yes to drugs. It's pretty sure that they were confident in the long play Vito would play using Michael. By the time Vito dies, Michael has been allied with all of Vito's friends in politics. We can criticize Vito, but should always remember that if not for people like him, then the mafioso would be blood thirsty drug cartels, which in no country, was safe for even non-intervining innocents.
The genovese family is the oldest of the mafia families in New York and one of the oldest mafia families in North America. I would think that the corleone family is based off of the genovese family.
It‘s actually better for the american mafia to be organized that way, why should it be different? Camorra and Ndrangheta didn‘t become powerful only because they‘re horizontal, but because Italy went after the Cosa Nostra in the 80s
New York city is too big too populated and theres way too much industry for there to be 1 boss. There needs to be discussions on the rackets they get involved in as they are massive and involve unions. The Italian criminal justice system is a joke.
Have they ever, except for that one time on television, (before Part 3 came out), considered re-releasing the films as a complete story, but in chronological order?
These are great videos and would be made significantly better if they had a human narrator. This is one of the better computer generated voices but the lack of inflection and mispronounced words is distracting.
I'm thinking based on the book you may be confusing Stracchi and Cuneo... because in the book it says that Cuneo had interests in the trucking business as well as the construction business. Fairly sure that it was Stracci who was referred to as the milkman
So isn’t killing the heads of the five families going to have the next in line come and get revenge on Mike or kill him? Im surprised they didn’t and the only person who did that was Hyman Roth for Moe Greene.
I don't think so; it would have been begrudgingly accepted as an overdue act of revenge for Sonny. Because Don Vito wouldn't. As Michael called it, "settling family business"
Well back then we didn’t know as much about mob as we do today, so Mario Puzo made one mistake thinking that “family” is actually a blood related and that only a son would be a successor to boss, so if a boss doesn’t have any alive or capable sons, the family would simple be absorbed by others, in this case Frank Five Angels or Clemenza or whoever it was
In RL underboss would just take over or capos would start a war between each other for that position, but even then it doesn’t mean they would avenge their former boss, they would most likely just be satisfied that they are now in charge
Paulie called out sick one too many times and in the mafia u have to be shrewd and suspicious at all times. Even Tom questioned whether Neri or Rocco had turned traitor in GF2 after the assassination attempt on Michael's life. Heck Tessio turned traitor. No one is truly your friend in the mafia. You're alive so long as u r loyal, useful and a good earner. U break loyalty or become a threat/liability and you're gone. Jimmy was looking to murder Henry after he was caught dealing drugs in Goodfellas, despite being life long friends.

I have a question about a deleted scene. In the first Godfather movie Vito says to get his sons together so they can visit the former Conciliary in the hospital in his death bed. The sons that go with him are Vito's three biological sons and his actual godson. But no Tom Haygan. Why is that? Tom is the new Conciliary and one would think he was also close to the former. I think this sets up how Micheal sees Tom and how he was able to coldly tell Tom he was "out". Even though Tom was adopted by the family he still wasn't fully considered a part of the family. He just wasn't all the way in that inner circle. In the scene (this was actually in the movie) Tom makes the statement "I was as much as a son to him as you were" to Sonny doesn't verbally reply he just kind of shrugs and before he can reply they are interrupted. Without that deleted scene the shrug could be interpreted was "yeah yer right" but WITH that deleted scene it could be taken as "ehhh...not exactly...". So why wasn't Tom included in the hospital visit?
This meeting was orchestrated by Don Vito Corleone to “make the peace” and stop the warring against his family, a move Michael says shows weakness and his father agrees with him, but it’s to maintain “the peace”. Michael then says, “You gave your word, I didn’t.” making it possible for him to exact revenge but only after his father passes.There was some kind of “honor” in waiting until his father passed, so he couldn’t be accused of breaking his word, that would truly have been “an infamnia”. Michael was very shrewd, cunning, and calculating in knowing if he didn’t exact revenge, there would be no one to protect him from any outside treachery or future attempts on his life, and when he found out it was Fredo that betrayed him, I think it genuinely broke his heart to think his own brother would turn against him because family was supposed to be stronger than steel. This goes to show the depths of greed and treachery some people will resort to to “stay on top.” , murder, lies, and betrayal, are all the price of doing, “this is the business we’ve chosen, I didn’t ask who gave the order, I didn’t like it, but I let it go because it had NOTHING TO DO WITH BUSINESS!!!“
I still think that if Vito had a private meeting with Cunneo, Stracci, and even Tattaglia, he would have opened their eyes to Barzini’s game and would have all agreed to have him whacked.
So I beleve you guys know that they only killed 4 bosses, not five? We have the Barzini,Corleone,Cuneo,Stracci, and Tattaglia, but they only killed Emilio Barzini, Carmine Cuneo, Anthony Stracci, and Philip Tattaglia, hense the Fout Families, the Corleones make it the 5.
The video has some weird moments, in which the audio is very fast or when a character says something in the middle of the narrator’s voiceover. Regardless, your videos are great. Keep up with the great job!
One thing that never made sense to me is that The Turk tried to make a deal with Sonny despite him attacking Vito…. Like why would anyone make a deal with their fathers killer ?!
When they killed the heads of the other 5 families did all of the families than become a part of the Corleone family or did they just find new heads of their families?
The biggest thing to consider when it comes to the commission is seniority can be telling. Usually the commission would get final say on who replaced them, but with only Chicago and Buffalo left to vote besides the Corleone's it would be very easy for Michael to maneuver who he wanted into those positions. Of course this could cause a Colombo/Gallo type war.
@@billhicks6449 With so many Dons getting whacked would their natural successors get to take over or would someone else in the families step over them that would be more agreeable to the Corleone's.
@@joemckim1183 who steps up is usually like emperors of old, he who has the support of the men. By that I mean the vast majority of support and it's likely as not to be a relative of the former boss. And to the commission it was a sign of weakness if you couldn't get the support of your men. They wouldn't confirm you knowing it will probably cause a war in your family. For instance while Michael could, in the eyes of everyone in the Corleone family, do as he wanted with the other five families with Pete and Sal; he never could have taken over if Clemenza or Tessio disapproved. Michael had never run a crew. Michael wasn't a street guy. In that case Michael would be seen as weak so they wouldn't confirm. So it's kind of a situational feeling out thing. Like the pope saying they get to crown the king because of gods will; as the King reminds the Pope that the church doesn't have standing army; while the people remind both they're the standing army.... God laughing at everyone.

Emilio Barzini=Vito Genovese
Philip Tattaglia=Tommy Lucchese
Vito Corleone =Joseph Bonanno
Victor Stracci=Carlo Gambino
Carmine Cuneo=Joseph Colombo
Anthony Molinari=James Lanza
Guiseppe Zaluchi=Joseph Zerilli
I believe Barzini was actually based on Lucky Luciano
He betrayed his old don and brought the families kinda together
Vito is Costello and luciano
Thank you for breaking down the other crime families other than the 5 in New York..... for years I always wanted to know who they were....👍
Cuneo = Lucchese
Tattaglia = Columbo
Barzini = Bonanno
Corleone = Gambino
Stracci = Genovese
*Colombo
How did you come up with these comparisons?
Corleone = Genovese...Don Corleone = Lucky Luchiano ...
I DISAGGRE PAL.
CORLEONE= GENOVESSE
BARZINI= GAMBINO
CUNEO=LUCCHESE
STRACCI=BONANO
TATAGLIA=COLUMBO!!!
How you came to these conclusion.s I mean I appreciate your answer. But . I wonder.. what ever the book is always better.
Though Frank Costello (Luciano/Genovese) was the primary inspiration for the Vito Corleone character.
Cool!
Those "outdated ideals" would have kept thier thing going far far longer. I'd like to hear a full story about the "Milk Man"! Great post guys
@ 4:38 that sound bite is hilarious 🤣
Good idea for a video!
What movie are the additional scenes in this video, ie. younger images of Barzini, etc?

The genovese family is the oldest of the mafia families in New York and one of the oldest mafia families in North America. I would think that the corleone family is based off of the genovese family.
Marlon Brando himself said he based the way he talked from Vito Genovese
It is ur right.

BRILLIANT absolutely fascinating.
Thank you for the information...it always was confusing to me about head of families
Man would be amazing to see a gta or mafia game that centers around these five families.
Many very interesting pieces of information.
The American mafia had the same organisation that of the Sicilian. These mafia's were completely put on the side by the horizontal montrous Camorra.
Thank you. A very rich video in deed.

The Corleone and Barzini Family’s are the two strongest families they are Based on the Gambino and Genovese Families the two most powerful in NY
These are great videos and would be made significantly better if they had a human narrator. This is one of the better computer generated voices but the lack of inflection and mispronounced words is distracting.
It ruined the whole video
I like don zaluchi when he gave the little speech lol
I'm thinking based on the book you may be confusing Stracchi and Cuneo... because in the book it says that Cuneo had interests in the trucking business as well as the construction business. Fairly sure that it was Stracci who was referred to as the milkman
So isn’t killing the heads of the five families going to have the next in line come and get revenge on Mike or kill him? Im surprised they didn’t and the only person who did that was Hyman Roth for Moe Greene.
Although it's a classic scene in the film, it made a little more sense in the books when Michael only has Barzini and Tattaglia killed.
I don't think so; it would have been begrudgingly accepted as an overdue act of revenge for Sonny. Because Don Vito wouldn't. As Michael called it, "settling family business"
Well back then we didn’t know as much about mob as we do today, so Mario Puzo made one mistake thinking that “family” is actually a blood related and that only a son would be a successor to boss, so if a boss doesn’t have any alive or capable sons, the family would simple be absorbed by others, in this case Frank Five Angels or Clemenza or whoever it was
In RL underboss would just take over or capos would start a war between each other for that position, but even then it doesn’t mean they would avenge their former boss, they would most likely just be satisfied that they are now in charge

how did Sonny discover that Paulie sold out Vito
That strutz
Sonny was a hot head, probably would’ve whacked Paulie regardless because either way he didn’t do his job and sonnys father was hurt because of it
Paulie called out sick one too many times and in the mafia u have to be shrewd and suspicious at all times. Jimmy was looking to murder Henry after he was caught dealing drugs in Goodfellas, despite being life long friends.
there's a deleted scene that explains how they figured it out
In the books, the Corleone family had ties to the phone company that Paul was using that was link to Sollozzo's location. The associates of the company inform sonny about it

Can you make a video of the families present at the meeting of Godfather 3 where the helicopter 🚁 comes a few mins after?
Dude, why don't you set the music volume lower? It's very distracting. I tried to watch several of your videos, and I can't because the background music is so loud that it distracts from listening to what you are saying. I just don't understand how you don't notice it when you make your videos.

Are thode video clips from any tv show?
4:39 😂 thats what i signed up for
I have a question about a deleted scene.
He had to fly to LA to see Woltz.
@@Bettyfan92614 oh yeah! That's right! Thanks
Family and money....oil and water
Vito Corleone owned all the judges and politicians in New York. And controlled all the gambling. In real life that's Frank Costello!
Like so many nickles and dimes
I still think that if Vito had a private meeting with Cunneo, Stracci, and even Tattaglia, he would have opened their eyes to Barzini’s game and would have all agreed to have him whacked.

One thing that never made sense to me is that The Turk tried to make a deal with Sonny despite him attacking Vito…. Like why would anyone make a deal with their fathers killer ?!
Where does this background info come from?
Is this a reupload?
Let's not forget about that glorified crew down in Jersey
I've seen clips from another movie (not in the trilogy) used, mostly when mentioning Mariposa...
What movie is this?!
Tattalglia is the Walder Frey of the Five Families.
When they killed the heads of the other 5 families did all of the families than become a part of the Corleone family or did they just find new heads of their families?
5 families remained. Albert Anastasia was the only Don deep sized by the commission. Carlo Gambino took over n killed Anastasia.
In the book, the Tattaglia and Barzini family were absorbed by the Corleones, Cuneo & Stracci surrendered peacefully.
I would like to read either novelized or graphic novelized stories that delve into greater detail who these characters are, and how they came to be. The Corleone Crime Family has had a number of publications that expanded upon The Godfather universe. I really want an expanded universe that curtails around the people mentioned in this video.
You and lots of others would love that but between Paramount and Puzos relatives, doubtful.
I always wondered why there were more than 5 Don's at the table.
