Beautifully presented, Gareth. Coming from the olden days, early childhood and violin practice. Being screamed at by teachers "You are not to hold that violin up with you finger hand!". It is true and rarely mentioned. Do not try to hold the guitar up with your fret hand. It is a natural (in the beginning) thing to do. It is strapped (or should be) it isn't going to fall. Quit choking it, let it breathe. Relax. Well done, Gareth.
Fantastic. Finally the truth is spoken. How can anyone learn an instrument without knowing the “thumdamendals”. I know there are many guitarist that don’t follow or know this technique. When I started guitar lessons way back in the mid sixties my first lesson the teacher told me how to hold the guitar and the thumb behind the neck and fingers which act as a pivot point providing great access to the fret board. I know I am a snob at times when I see others play with the thumb hanging over the fretboard. Yes I know some fret the strings this way. And yes whatever works for you is great. When I taught I gave this advice but in the end it was the student to determine what worked.
By far, GCH Guitar Academy is very informative. This is a great source to learn guitar. I would say, they want their viewers to learn and be proud of themselves in learning how to play guitars. GCH shares everything they know at a very understandable level. I will not hesitate to donate or buy something on their website just to support them so they can continue to make videos that all viewers can benefit from. Thank you, for every effort you put in to make us beginners be encouraged to continue to play and don't give up. Kudos!

Thanks for this excellent video. When teaching yourself on the internt like i did, you dont get that one on one teacher looking at how you are holding the guitar and correct you if you are holding it wrong. This helped me a lot.
This is by far the best guitar tutor video I have seen! One other tip that I alone have worked out for older students with wide fingertips & ‘thick’ fingernails.... After trimming your nails.... hold an emery board at an angle & file a bevel on the top of the leading fingernail edge. I have found this to be excellent to prevent the fingernail ‘catching’ on the upper/lower in pitch string. I have now subscribed to this excellent channel - thanks! I will never be a guitarist - simply having some fun in my later years. Martyn?
Jeremy Parr I just got my first acoustic guitar and never play one before this video has been awesome as I never know why i couldn't understand why my cords don't sound right thank you so much for showing me how to hold the guitar correctly yours truly Jeremy Parr
Brilliant video again, thank you! I have to emphasize the perfect technical quality: difficult camera-angles with good lightning and always in focus, thumbs up! Also the audio quality is excellent, so it is pure fun to listen and watch your stuff.
Excellent video with interesting suggestions. In my teen days I studied classic guitar but gave up after two years. I realize now one of the reason was the guitar was too large for my body size (and hand size as well) making it quite uncomfortable. In that time I tthink here were not many options. Now, at 73 I would like to give another try, not planning to become a great player but just to have fun trying to learn it with additional benefit to keep my brain working ! Thanks again for the video!
Thanks for your advice. I've come up with one more cheat way to reach difficult chords and it's using capo at least at fret 1. This way the strings are a bit lower and the distance between frets a bit shorter and this way I'm able to play some musical pieces that otherwise I'm not. Yes, the music itself is this way a bit (at least half a tone) less authentic but it's still a way to perform! ☺️
@@jimtapia8836 I've never had this in mind, but in fact, it's a brilliant idea! Thanks ☺️ l'll make use of it ☺️ and probably others who are reading this! Ps to make clear what it's all about: to play authentic music with a capo, you should at first tune the guitar half a/one etc. tone lower, and then place the capo on the 1st/2nd fret etc. ☺️
Your style of teaching is more than brilliant. Other guitar teachers in the world, should pull down some of their egotistical jargon and become your students.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I had gotten so unmotivated after taking ONE class in middle school and getting a guitar after because my fingers would hurt with metal strings as i was used to playing w/ plastic ones. But now 5 years later in quarantine I’m back on it and motivated with no longer using the excuse of “my fingers are too short” on myself 😈😈❤️.
Excellent video. I am having a problem positioning the body of the guitar so I can see the frets, and keep it comfortably on my leg. I want to hold the neck down, but I saw a tip that recommends holding the neck at a 45 degree angle. I just can't get the guitar body in a comfortable position.
This is a common problem. Slowly but surely you'll find it less essential to see the frets and eventually you'll be able to play without having to look at the frets. If you play sitting down, for some people it helps to put something under the foot of the leg you rest the guitar on, like a brick or you can get special foot stools. I hope this helps😊
My fat fingers were giving issues with A so much so I've been avoiding it, I mean I can make the chord but when I relax and enjoy playing it becomes problematic and difficult to enjoy. I've known I can play a good A with two fingers for quite a while but because I practiced so hard using three fingers I'm finding it hard transitioning to other chords when I use only two. As a comparative beginner I don't really want to do anything that feels like going backwards and relearning all of the changes, going from a two fingered A to other chords and vice versa just feels wrong. Watching this has made me determined to crack it so thanks, I know if I force myself it will come.
Nice video... the back camera really adds to it... Oh... and a little tip... try not to lift your elbow when playing, keep it close to your body, I've seen people going full chicken wings with their elbow when trying a guitar for the first time... Yep, my guitar has holes in the places where the nails rub the fingerboard, being a cheap guitar I don't care that much, but it sure is a lot easier to play with you nails trimmed. Also, my guitar action was high enough for a person to fit the pinkie below the strings around the 12th fret....
