  • Can poor sleep during pregnancy impact the long-term health of the baby? 2023 Rising Star Awardee Claudio Lugo-Candelas explains the lasting effects of poor prenatal sleep on baby brain health in this interview with Alto Neuroscience Founder, President, & CEO and One Mind Scientific Advisory Board member Amit Etkin.
On this episode of “One Scientist’s Mind,” created with support provided by Bank of America, One Mind Rising Star Awardee Dr. Claudia Lugo-Candelas, PhD is interviewed by One Mind Scientific Advisory Board member Dr. Amit Etkin, and explains how poor prenatal sleep can negatively impact brain development in postnatal life and long-term brain health. Claudia discusses how early life adversity (or childhood adversity) such as child abuse, child neglect, having a parent whose incarcerated, or having a parent with a serious mental illness, can impact brain development and sleep health. By studying how child brain development may be affected they hope to be able to discover signs that could indicate if a baby may be at higher risk for developing depression and anxiety in the future. For example, poor sleep during pregnancy may be linked to an increased likelihood of the child developing ADHD. With this information they can then look out for opportunities for intervention, or ways to improve sleep health, whether it's helping mothers sleep better during pregnancy or teaching people healthy bedtime routines and other habits to help parents and their children sleep better.
