I wanted to share my experience and how I overcame sleep anxiety:
I couldn’t sleep well for more than a year. I either slept 3-4 hours per night or I woke up so many times. I had always woke up feeling restless, tired and having a headache. I was having panic attacks out of nothing every often and tight chest and heart beating fast all days. When it came to bed time, I got soo scared. I was thinking ‘ shite, is it something I would live with forever? Am I going to die soon?’ I tried a lot of stuffs like supplements to relax my body, cutting out coffee and tea, no alcohol, eating healthy, doing exercise everyday, and bed hygiene, etc. And nothing helped. I then realized I did all of those with an expectation that I would sleep well at nights. Because I expected I would sleep well, I felt so frustrated and upset when I couldn’t.
    This is what learnt:
I have still continued doing those things above but without any expectations that I would sleep well at night
I started to meditation 🧘‍♀️- life saver!!
I started journaling where I proceed my thoughts and feelings during the day
I learnt acceptance - if I can’t sleep it is ok. I have prepared a list of things I would do if I can’t sleep -journaling, making a cup of warm tea and reading my favorite books.
I tried to make my brain thinking ‘if I don’t sleep i will have more time to do all the things I like which is great!!’
I tried not check the o’clock but also not to stay in the bed too long if I couldn't fall asleep as then later my brain would associate bed with thinking time
The key is Patience - for me it took months to normalise my sleep so please be patient with yourself. Always remember all the thoughts and feelings you are experiencing now won’t stay forever. They will come and go. Believe me! I can do it and you can do it too! :)

Ok guys, I’ve been reading through these comments and I feel I gotta share how I overcame this shit. So I had been dealing with depression due to a traumatic event 2.5 years ago. That depression turned to anxiety and that anxiety turned to insomnia. I was having panic attacks over hypothetical situations and just worrying about everything, mainly about what I’ve done wrong in the past and what I should’ve done back then to change that. I got tired of always thinking about that shit so I would constantly just try to push those thoughts out of my mind and try to forget about the situation entirely, since it had been stressing me out like crazy. Out of nowhere, I couldn’t sleep for days so I got fed up and eventually came across this video. A huge thing that I had to realize was that I hadn’t been facing my stress the right way. Even though I was “thinking” about all the stuff that had happened, I wasn’t actually DEALING with it. In a sense I was still running away from my problems and my body was telling me to deal with it through the only way it knew how...insomnia. I wasn’t dealing with my stress during the day, so my body was telling me to deal with it at night. I ended up devoting a time during the day (for me it’s in the shower) to just think about everything that bothers me and to ACCEPT all the bad shit that had happened to me. Throughout these years, I had constantly been praying for peace, and I was finally able to realize that peace is NOT perfection in your life. Peace is your willingness to accept life for all that it truly is: the good AND ESPECIALLY the bad. Once I had accepted that bad things happen and that is OK, I started to do more self care activities like exercising, talking with friends, etc. That night I got in the bed telling myself “I probably won’t fall asleep tonight and that’s OK. Just enjoy life and understand that even though you have gone through so much bullshit in the past, you are STILL HERE”. That night I felt my body get heavy, which actually would have caused me to have a panic attack in the past, but since I had a better outlook on my life, I accepted it and experienced a sense of peace that I had never felt before. I slept a total of 7 hours that night and have been getting a good nights rest ever since.

I was thinking way too much about falling asleep at night, exerting too much effort on thinking and worrying about all sorts of things. I shifted my focus on breathing which calmed me down tremendously. I would suggest shifting your focus on something small that calms you down at night. It could be breathing, a pleasant memory in the past, whatever. Just something other than the shit that stresses you out.

I found a perfect way to fall asleep and it has really worked for me. Lie down on your side, whichever side is comfortable for you and consciously relax all your muscles, especially focus on forehead, eyes and jaws. Once you are fully relaxed, tuck in your head slightly my moving your chin closer to your chest. This is a restful posture and helps you to fall asleep easily. Next focus on your breath. Breathe consciously and deeply. As you breathe in, say "in" in your mind and as you breathe out, say "out" in your mind. Keep your full focus and attention on your breath and you will fall asleep in under 2 minutes!! This routine really worked for me and hope it helps other people too...

Do you guys go all night without sleep? For me it started a little over a month ago I had a really stressful day and that night I didn't sleep a bit. A few weeks later after I had an ingrown toenail surgery I went two more sleepless nights. Not back to back but a few days in between. The doctor prescribed me Trazodone and I took it for about two weeks at 100 mg but it stopped working as good and I went another sleepless night. They told me to take 200 mg and on the third day of taking that it almost made me pass out within 30 minutes of taking it. I took 100 mg once more and then stopped cold turkey on the Trazodone. Since then I had a few more sleepless nights. I slept good the last three days getting about 7 hours of sleep but last night was another sleepless night. When I go to bed I get feeling all nervous, jittery, shaky, and when I do that I don't fall asleep. I assume it is due to anxiety and worrying about not falling asleep. I worry will I ever fall asleep again, I worry about that fatal insomnia. I know it doesn't help worrying but it makes it hard not to when I can't fall asleep. Do you guys have similar problems or am I just a nutcase?

I actually had a better sleep in the last 5 days by journaling my worries/thoughts/gratefulness and I came back here not journaling for a day and tonight. Currently at 2:12AM. Slept for a min at 1:20AM then woke up 1:27AM with fucking lights on. I hate it my brother turns the light every goddamn time.

I have ADHD and severe anxiety, so sleeping has always been a huge struggle for me. but the sleep routine is CRUCIAL!!! I found a way to force myself to fall asleep on command and it may be helpful to some of y’all. A long time ago, when I was trying to distract myself from worrying so that I could fall asleep, I started watching history videos. I found that their voices were super calming and I enjoyed learning about it but it was slow paced enough to allow myself to stay calm if I focused on the content and not on my thoughts, and I quickly fell asleep. Over the years I kept doing this, at first, when I started to feel tired, I immediately went to the channel that makes me feel calm and sleepy so that I gave my brain a paired association with those videos and sleep. Now, years later, when I watch that content I am asleep within five minutes. I’m not sure if anyone else does this, but it has worked for me so well, and being that I have ADHD, it’s hard for me to stick to habits but I kind of forced myself to have this one and it really helps. The times I allow myself to keep scrolling or do unproductive ways of distracting myself from anxious thoughts, it takes me way longer to fall asleep. I hope this is helpful for some of you, I just need to start doing it earlier so that I am able to get a full 8 hours. Good luck to everyone on their journey. And thank you to this content creator for putting information like this out there and making it accessible to people like me who can’t afford therapy at the moment ❤

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I wish to share mine and please let me know if it can be solved.... My dad was an alcoholic...so whenever he came home i used to get so scared...my body would shiver and hands and legs would be sweaty and this happened for many years... However he became sober but this reaction used to come whenever I had some stressor or perceived threat.. just a month ago I got the news I have to move out of my house for a job ever since this reaction was coming and this took away my sleep and now when I'm sleeping my mind becomes so hypervigilant and is feeling unsafe . I'm trying to build capacity however it's quite hard...is this solvable...in the long run...also sleeping pills don't seem to work for me... when I go to bed my body wakes up with a stress response like sensations throughout the body and i barely get 1-2 hrs of sleep per night but i lie in the bed all day.. because I feel tired

During the day I’m anxious but busy thank god so it helps me distract myself. But at night, oh man. My chest tightens up, my breathing is shallow, and I feel tense. I feel as if I’m about to have a panic attack but I try my best to distract myself with my phone but it’s hard. I’m tired of living like this. I did the “brain dump” intuitively a couple times and it really helps! One time it took me 2 whole hours to write down all of my worries, but after that I was sleeping like a baby. Also helps to highlight main points and solutions after, makes me calm knowing that those won’t go anywhere tomorrow and I can start from the highlights in the morning.

I typed out the steps for myself to practice. Here they are. Hope this helps everyone 🙂
    Long term fix
Schedule a time each day to address your current worries or stresses
(this tells your brain that you will be taking care of what needs addressing so it can stop triggering thoughts of the worries)
Should only take a few minutes. Don’t do it just before bed
Step 1: Make a list of your current worries - write them down
Step 2: Sort through your worries - highlight the ones that are actionable (as opposed to the hypothetical ones)
Step 3: Create a plan - write down the next smallest actionable step you can take to tackle each highlighted worry. Use verbs. Then set a reminder or the next day when you will do it
Step 4: Acceptance - for the problems that can’t be solved right away, set them aside wholeheartedly. Say to yourself: I can’t do everything at once / I can’t control everything
Step 5: Shifting your focus - shift focus to things that are going well, your successes, what you are grateful for
Quick fix - brain dump: if you’re in bed, worrying - get up and write all your thoughts down then set the paper aside and say out loud: I’m gonna face this tomorrow. Go Back to bed and read, meditate, think of other things

So timeless and yes, there’s no quick fix...I’ve had to change a lot of my behavior, implement new routines and be very conscious of several items to get over my insomnia. Journaling and a consistent routine have helped me a lot. I also love listening to something calming before bed to distract me from my own thoughts and talk me to sleep. So much that I’ve started my own podcast to help others feeling similarly. Listening to my own voice won’t work for me but I now got my list of podcasts that I love listening to when getting ready to sleep.

5am waking up all the sudden because throughout the day I’ve been worrying about work tasks which I must face on coming Monday. Just like you said because I consistently thinking and worrying about it, and while I do not have an action to solve that concern so my brain just train it self to also worrying the problem during my sleep, which gives me poor sleeping quality, and worsen my health. I am only 38 and I have gain more grey hair more than my 70 year old father, due to this years of continuous worrying habit. My client the one that gave me the work pressure also say to me “you need to relax, you have a family”, but I simply can’t. Now laying on my bed, unable to stop my brain from triggering the work problem, I decided I must do something to shift my concentration so I came across your video. I watch the entire clip, processing each and every word you said, and all the sudden it occurs to me that you’re right. The problem I have with work isn’t happening started today but for few weeks now. I was able to sleep throughout other night is because I did something about the problem before I sleep during those nights, but that same action which I did for all other night isn’t performing today because it’s weekend and I know have no way of doing that until Monday. While I was unable to end the tasks I am facing, this is why my brain constantly thinking about it, and sadly during my sleep too. Therefore, with the help from your advice, Instead of looping my brain back to the problem, I decided to write this long comment about my problem, and placed a solution in my mind that the problem I have can be solve on Monday so stop worrying about it. And zzzzzz........

I've been a long time insomnia sufferer due to anxiety and it's always the constant worrying that keeps me up at night. Who knew it might help to worry during the day?! Amazing. Thank you for putting this out there, it makes me (and others I'm sure) feel not so alone! ❤️

it always takes me forever to fall asleep, and whenever I wake up my thoughts starts running AUTOMATICALLY. literally. I get never a break from these thoughts.
thoughts such as things I’ve done in the past, how it would’ve ended up if I took a different choice that day, if I ever will wake up after falling asleep, and just painful things. I be thinking non stop all day.

Ever since my mom and I caught covid, I started having trouble falling asleep. Most nights, I would find myself staring at the dark ceiling and then suddenly sitting up, desperately trying to breathe. When I was being treated for covid, I had occasional shortness of breath and would often stop breathing despite consciousness. I stopped sleeping during nights since I was afraid I would stop breathing in my sleep. After recovering from covid, I now have to battle with anxiety and fear of losing my loved ones. I would get intense panic attacks that wouldn't let me sleep and breathe. I just hate it when night comes, I just want to go back to the strong-minded me who never lets anxiety get better of me. I want to be able to sleep normally again, especially since my classes are gonna be starting soon. :(

one of the ways I calm myself from anxiety and panic attacks because I get them so often it’s annoying and scary but I basically lay down or if I’m out I sit down and shake my leg or foot I’ve done this my whole life and it helps me a lot if I focus on my food and it’s movement my mind is distracted from the negative thoughts and the anxiety when it comes from nothing. it helps me tire myself out and keeps me calm.

We all will be alone at times. This is good. Being alone is time to develop skills such as drawing, creating, meditation or listening to calm music. Start loving you. Things I’ve done to get better sleep that have actually helped recently:
    - use colour shift on my iPhone to take out all the blue light and make my screen red.
    - using red light bulbs for my bedside lamps and limiting my exposure to lights that are not red.
    - getting into bed at the same time and waking up at the same time
    - going for a 20 minute walk as soon as I wake up in the morning.
    - sleeping on a more comfortable mattress
    - darkening my room with thicker curtains
And recently just investing in Red Filter blue light blocking glasses to wear at night. So far all this is improving my sleep and I’ve had trouble sleeping for the last 15 years. I’ve tried journaling, meditating, ‘accepting my sleeplessness’ type methods - whilst they did help to calm my mind down, I’d often still find it difficult to fall asleep. Sometimes it’s your environment that you need to change.

I have been practising the Mindfulness of Breathing technique ruclips.net/user/postUgkxIIDVgnLN8pF_fPOyoZ1nTjbLvvZcib6r as taught in this CD for about 2 years having read about it in Paramananda's Change Your Mind book and taken a real liking to it. However at times I struggle to remain focused on the breathing and thought that at such times this guided version might suit me. So after two years I finally decided to buy it! The first 7'24 of Track 1 of the CD is a body relaxtion which I do not use: I don't like body relaxation techniques and I find 27' just a little too long for meditation. The remaining 20' of gentle, guided meditation helps me tremendously to relax and stay focused. I find him's voice very soothing and whilst he is present to guide you through the 4 stages of the meditation, his presence is not intrusive or distracting. For the past two years I have tried to follow this technique as best I can with gentle meditation music despite music not being recommended. Having used this CD a couple of times I think I will try from now on to adopt a new routine of no music and just this CD as I find it so helpful. I realise now that the music really is distracting and I have enjoyed listening to the ambient sounds around me which I am normally unaware of. I can not comment on the other 2 tracks of Metta or Walking Meditation as I bought the CD solely to help me with the Mindfulness of Breathing and it does just that - very effectively. In my opinion this CD is money very well spent as it will guide you through a thoroughly useful and beneficial meditation technique and I don't think you can put a price on that.

I’m 15 and out of nowhere since I was seven or so I haven’t been able to sleep until like 1 to 5AM I tried Military methods (information provided by my father years ago), I tried sleeping pills, three at once one time, I lay in bed for literal hours with my eyes closed not opening them once half the time, writing, and a few times I’ve tried meditation and reading or exercise. Nothing had worked. I hope that what you suggested works. I start school in a few days and I keep staying up longer and longer whether I see electronic screens or not. All of these things besides reading and exercise is in the dark. My father and stepmother yell at me almost every night for not being able to sleep. My father, brother, and almost everyone else on my fathers side of the family has insomnia and most got rid of that and our reoccurring migraines through falling in love or being around someone that they love. But with COVID I can’t do that either. Also I’m a 15 year old kinda chubby math and science nerd so I don’t think that’ll happen any time soon lmao.

I feel so anxious but I don't really know what I'm anxious about. Then I start to have a panic attack. Thinking that I won't be able to sleep again just like the other night. And it might come to a point where I lose my mind because I don't get enough rest. I worry I might actually go crazy if I won't sleep for another night. What if I start hallucinating? What if I lose touch with reality? What if? I can't really control it. I'm struggling. I feel so damn sleepy and tired, but whenever I close my eyes, after a few mins, I'd wake up again, hyperventilating, but still sleepy, yet can't sleep. I'm 21, and I've been suffering from this since I was 19. It comes and it goes. It's really tiring 😔

Until you have reprogrammed your mind not to think when you lay down to sleep, you will need to to get it to stop thinking or it can be hours before you fall asleep. That requires that you act determined and deliberately in dismissing all thinking when you find yourself doing it. That’s tough enough but what do you do instead? I often meditated by focusing on my breathing or I tried to recall a specific instance in my past when I was deeply relaxed and fell asleep in a most pleasurable and nonstimulating way (like under a tree in a beautiful place or on my parents’ couch on Thanksgiving day after a nice meal when I was home from college). Those two techniques often work for me but my most effective method now is to concentrate on the images that I see with my eyes closed (closed eye visualizations). They are extremely subtle flashes of light (created by your optic nerve or brain, so not actual light) without recognizable shapes or forms and that change over time and are almost impossible to see if I’m thinking. Once I start to see things, it’s like watching the “snow” on an old time television tuned between stations. There’s nothing to stimulate thinking from what I see and yet it’s rather mesmerizing and relaxing and I quickly fall asleep almost every time. Best of luck to you. I’m retired now but spent decades spending hours many nights from 1:00 or 2:00 am until my alarm went off worrying about everything at work so I’m a pro at these things, unfortunately.

Frank Martinez as a chronic insomniac since childhood ... who seems to be able to override my daily routines and years of practising sleep hygiene... deciding to ignore the advice not to nap was the single most helpful thing I’ve found so far... after the work week I take a “luxury nap” to celebrate it feels like a reward. On work nights if I’m tired I sleep for a bit when I get home... because not napping made no improvement to my insomnia. When laying awake at night my anxiety is reduced knowing a got a couple of hours already in the evening.
Way less stressful than laying there knowing I held of on napping when I was exhausted and now still can’t sleep at night anyway. It always made me feel so cheated and angry at people giving sleep advice not to nap, as they weren’t willing to hear that it actually works better for some people.
Interesting fact... Winston Churchill took a nap / siesta daily from 2-4pm while dealing with the stress of fighting Hitler during world war 2 and credits it to maintaining his ability to make clear assertive decisions throughout the day instead of burning out from the stress / making regretful judgement calls due to fatigue.
Life changing since I started. Hasn’t reduced the sleep I get at night and stopped my bed from being a source of fear.

I've been having less and less sleep. I'm a student and I find it depressing because that's when I overeat and think about how I'm not doing so well. Later I get depressed for overeating and overthinking especially about my final upcoming exams. Can I finally sleep well without distractions?

I got really excited when she said "Anxious about anxiety" because I thought she was going to solve my "Worrying about worrying" problem. I'm not worried about anything except one thing: "what if I don't fall back to sleep?". But she blew past that and started talking about addressing actual issues. Also her "list things you're grateful for" thing just makes me MORE anxious because I'm basically listing all the things I'm going to lose (job, wife, house etc) from chronic sleep deprivation. When FDR said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself", he nailed it.

For real, if you’re watching this and struggle with insomnia, it is worth getting used to wearing a sleep mask. Mantas are extremely comfortable and it only took me a couple nights to adjust, and I have a way easier time getting to sleep and staying asleep. 10/10 recommend
