Mike Johnson really was an underrated part of Dino Jr’s history. It’s testament to his talent that J kept him around right to the end of the band’s first run.
Love this song and that Tele. J is one of my biggest inspirations as a guitarist and I’m in the process of building my own poor man’s J signature Tele. $1400 is too rich for my blood!
Lou Barlow, founded, Sebadoh, and former, original bassist for Dinosaur JR.....made one of the great rock n r Roll comments....."When J. Mascis realize he was a genius. We were fucked"
It was the name of a "Late Show" music special broadcast on the BBC in the UK in 1993, had performances on by Dinosaur Jr/Screaming Trees/Pearl Jam/RATM and loads more that i ahve forgot. Hope this helps, most of it is up here on youtube i think.
He uses Teles more than people realise. The solos on the new Dino album are all done on a Tele. He's been using them since the "Green Mind" album. He mostly sticks to Jazzmasters live though, because it's what still works best for the old stuff.
@hugmeshootme Haha righteous. I live in Ottawa, in Canada, and saw them like 3 weeks ago and they were perfect. The ringing in my ears hasn't gone away yet lmao
I’ve literally never heard anyone say you can’t solo on a telecaster, or any guitar for that matter. You people that say random things to reaffirm your purchase of a particular piece of gear are from another planet.
i could not agree more! very well put. i adore dinosaur jnr and this song! things changed VERY fast, didn't they? i never really knew how good we had it in the late 80s and thru the 90s until now... that it has sadly passed :(
@@moonandantarctica2 don't really understand your comment... typos happen in interwebs land however in this case there is nothing wrong: jnr has, is and always will be an accepted abbreviation for junior
Saw them in 1992 @ Brixton academy on the ‘Rollercoaster tour’ which consisted of - Jesus & Mary chain (Headliners) - My Bloody Valentine - Dinosaur jnr - Blur? Tripping balls on *Purple Ohms*
I prefer the backing vocals of this version instead of the female tbh. I just really like the delivery of the line “you’re not going to get me through this are you” when it’s at a lower note as a contrast to J’s higher pitch. It works better
I listen to various genres of music. no one should ever say what is better than what. If you love this appreciated it. there is a lot of music you will never discover as i have and yet i dont think my music acumen is better than yours. its whatever touches you. This will be the Last song on my movie i will make
I really do await the day when good music like this is allowed to return. But for now, artistic expression is forced out the way, for the sake of profit. It's gonna a lot to break that mould. J Mascis is a guitar beast!
This is the first time I've ever seen J play a tele, he plays a strat in the 'take a run at the sun' video, but other than that I've only seen him with jazzmasters.
@DeadWhiteButterflies I would like to make a recommendation to you. Please listen to the Screaming Females. They have toured with Dinosaur Jr. over the past few years and J Mascis has mentioned that they are one of his favorite bands. Let me tell you also that the lead singer and guitarist Marissa Paternoster is the best guitar player in rock right now and is just as good as J Mascis. They're current 2010 album Castle Talk is the best place to start. You can thank the band when you see them.
@DeadWhiteButterflies If you want some good grunge music with expression check out my friends band InterCoarse. The band name is InterCoarse because they go in and out of heavy haha.
@halifuckinfan yeah, radiohead is one of the bests - XX is great if you are open to different music however I'm not into silversun pickups like my brother is. Vampire weekend, sonic youth, sebadoh, fruit bats, and definatly mew if you like dinosaur jr because J-mascis did a song with Mew- "why are you looking grave" and it was beautiful. :)
@DeadWhiteButterflies One last thing. I know you are getting sick of me so I will be quick. You can either type in Screaming Females " I Don't Mind It " here on RUclips or you can look in my favorites and it will be the first vid you see. You will not regret it.
@DeadWhiteButterflies Actuallly, I kinda disagree with my own statement now. Seems I posted this without really thinking. I actually find that there is good music right now. You just need to stop complaining that "All the best stuff has already been done" and go look for it. Besides, it's not like genius only gets one chance and that's it. In fact there has never been a better time than now, when you can do whatever you want and there's at least some people who will love you for it.
@DeadWhiteButterflies You're just not looking in the right places because there is plenty of wonderful art music. Dr. Dog, Elliott Smith, Woods, No Age, Ganglians, Afternoon brother, animal collective, deerhoof, deerhunter, kirkwood dellinger, black keys, awesome color, decemberists, red hot chili peppers, meat puppets, pregnant, black dice, wavves (maybe not so much wavves - it's acquired), caribou, atlas sound, mew... whatever - probably wont like all these anyway. Just ideas
@MrHello435222 Yes, I understand your input is superior to all. They lack talent, indeed. I can respect your opinion but maybe you shouldn't speak as if you own all truth. Bands all appeal to different audiences. If you do not belong in the audience, cool. I only made a suggestion.Criticism is found against every band including dinosaur jr but we all love the one comment to throw in the negative feedback. Thank you for your wonderful criticism. Whatever you say.
Love the way the bass plays the first guitar solo!
mike johnson cool like that
Mike Johnson played the first guitar solo on the record as well (as he does in the ‘Get Me’ video).
mascis... one of the best. the hendrix of his day. too bad he dont get the fame he deserves
something tells me he wouldn't want it anyway
When you're writing music from your heart to try and heal, I don't think fame or fortune really matter
Man, I close my eyes and I'm young again, skating the bank and the library till I get chased off.
My favorite J song. The solo on the album is magical, especially this 3 second part near the end. It just kills me.
I feel you man. I don’t know you but I know exactly what you mean.
Where you been is probably the most relatable album to anyone going through heartbreak and it affecting them on a spiritual level
His solos always make me feel good
They never seem to play this song the same way twice... this is, without question, the best version. Fucking epic.
30 years later still love it for lyrics and solo.... got me through a lot
That bass solo
i've listened to that song a thousand times
This is my favorite guitar solo ever. Lucky enough to have seen the Green Mind and Where You Been tours.
Replying to 9 year old comment, but yeah, mine too
Saw this when it aired, age 19. My first exposure to DJ and I’ll was instantly hooked. Still am all these years later.
I remember when release dates for new Dinosaur Jr albums felt like a holiday! Great performance.
This is such a beaut of a song- so rough and so sweet in a way that no one but they did. Love it.
Most underrated guitar player ever
Who the F underrates him? Don't just say things because they're fashionable.
Mike Johnson really was an underrated part of Dino Jr’s history. It’s testament to his talent that J kept him around right to the end of the band’s first run.
I think the most remarkable thing is they always sound near perfect to their albums live regardless of where they are.
I saw Sebadoh for the first time didn’t know any of their
Music but they were great Lou was a cool dude. Can’t argue with Free
Fender just came out with that same Telecaster as his signature. It’s dope. I still wanna get the Jazzmaster one.
Country Music’s #1 Crooner !
Please, name one country band/artist that remotely resembles this. I'd love to hear it.
It was the name of a "Late Show" music special broadcast on the BBC in the UK in 1993, had performances on by Dinosaur Jr/Screaming Trees/Pearl Jam/RATM and loads more that i ahve forgot.

I recorded this on VHS and replayed it until the tape wore out! Janes Addiction were on there, too.
The now famous sparkle blue Telecaster
He uses Teles more than people realise. The solos on the new Dino album are all done on a Tele. He's been using them since the "Green Mind" album. He mostly sticks to Jazzmasters live though, because it's what still works best for the old stuff.
This is the era I found dinosaur jr - i love this.
J Mascis.. a great influence in my life and music.. =)
Hell yeah. Saw this when it was broadcast....great to see it again! thanks for posting
Glorious, lovelorn guitar skywriting. Pure magic.
First bass solo i've seen since i saw tenacious d's bass player do a ripper of a solo when i saw them play.
j just starts making up stuff at points when he forgets the lyrics lol
J Mascis, ladies and gentleman. Gorgeous blue metal flake tele too.
Beautiful.
wow that intro was slighty more subtle. Love it. The last 2 chord of the intro bit were minors or something. sounds sweet.
Dino-life.
J sporting a telecaster! Still ripping it up! A massive talent!
@hugmeshootme
Haha righteous. I live in Ottawa, in Canada, and saw them like 3 weeks ago and they were perfect. The ringing in my ears hasn't gone away yet lmao
Tasty stuff. Love the guitar work. Always been a fave of mine.
j looks so amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish I lived in a time where playing Grunge on a glittery guitar and looking like a Hasidic Jew was considered cool.
It’s never been cool to be Jewish
It was cool times, live and let live times..... nobody got offended, and we weren't political nor plagued with mental illness!
The guitar solo has its place. And this is it.
J has just proven you CAN solo on a Telecaster, and make it sound jaw dropply amazing. Unlike what some idiots say.
I’ve literally never heard anyone say you can’t solo on a telecaster, or any guitar for that matter. You people that say random things to reaffirm your purchase of a particular piece of gear are from another planet.
best guitar solo ever
great song
J looks like some kind of bizarre Jewish priest with that hat.. lol
hot bass lead coming on a first for dino thanx mike+j

We can tell how much you love them by the way you spelled the name of the band wrong 🤣
@@moonandantarctica2 don't really understand your comment... typos happen in interwebs land however in this case there is nothing wrong: jnr has, is and always will be an accepted abbreviation for junior
@@belllabean not that it really matters, but the name of the band is "Dinosaur Jr."
So sick!
He's got his Ralph Macchio from Crossroads look going on.
Grande Dinosaur ❤

- Jesus & Mary chain (Headliners)
- My Bloody Valentine
- Dinosaur jnr

I fucking love J's solos!
worthy!
Awsummm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That rocks!

J Mascis is a guitar beast!
he's too good.
he is my kind of guy
huhuhu........
Lead bass...that's what I'm fucking talking about!
Dino Jr. along with Pavement , & Sonic Youth kinda held the lines of artistic purity during the wannabe Nirvana age.
@DeadWhiteButterflies Believe me. You will be wanting to see them live and buy all of their albums after listening to Castle Talk.
Finally found the one with the bass solo.
This is the first time I've ever seen J play a tele, he plays a strat in the 'take a run at the sun' video, but other than that I've only seen him with jazzmasters.
♥
@217potato
Lol, for a moment I read that as "Screaming Trees" who are another great band XD yeah, I'll make a note of it and go listen to them.
ahahah...me too!
great mascis!!!
I've still got this on VHS. Wasn't the show called "No Nirvana, nevermind"?
BBC2 The Late Show. Sensational line up! What an era!

I see this uploader rinsed his/her VHS of this performance too.

I wasn't doing comparisons, it was suggestions. Whatever's cool with you. :)
