Arjuna Ranatunga one of the finest human beings to have graced the game of cricket. And Ponting the greatest of batsmen who played to win and always putting pressure on the opponent. Ponting was a player of big matches like world cup finals. Amazing cricket amazing times those!
''If you pull then pull like Punter '' All my younger days when I used to play cricket in the nearby field, I tried to replicate this man's batting stances & pull shots ❤️ A mighty legend of the Game
That was only to replace an injured Steve Waugh. But he was a fine ODI cricketer, playing that format more than 50 times for Australia. He was also a Great domestic Cricketer. Queensland's all-time leading run-scorer in first-class cricket.
That era was tragic for so many great Aussie cricketers. Law, Bichel, MacGill to name a few. Born at any other time they'd have all played many more tests.
Mark Waugh summed it up best, quoted a day or so later " ... he will make a lot of hundreds, I don't think he needs to worry too much about that one ... " And so it proved to be, 41 test tons 3O one day tons which is only 2 less international centuries than the mighty Waugh twins combined. Ponting also clocked up another 6 9Os in test cricket so 6 of his 62 scores in tests between 5O and 99 inclusive were 9Os, which is slightly less than 1 in 1O. Mathematical probability would say that 1 in 5 scores a batsman makes between 5O and 99 inclusive would be 9Os. He played his first and last test on the same ground, the WACA in Perth, I wonder how many other cricketers did this somewhat oddity?
Bryce In terms of pure batting records, forget Ricky Ponting, no one comes anywhere near the great Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin has 100 international centuries to Ponting’s 71 and 34,000 odd international runs to Ponting’s 27,000 plus.
sam jackson although I can put my submission with facts but i won’t because I avoid debating with ill-bred individuals It would have been great if you had added politeness in your submissions Peace!
TheFallRise Comparing Lara and Sachin is like comparing Ferrari with Porsche, while u are entitled to have your opinion on which and why u think is better, there will always be someone with an equally appropriate reason as to why they think the other is better. So its pretty meaningless debate really. Sachin, Lara, Ponting, Kallis all were modern greats and I think everyone will agree to that. peace!
Lol, Ponting is commonly viewed as one of the greatest batsmen and fielders of all time. I think he might be the most successful captain of all time too. He’s not underrated at all, everyone with cricket knowledge considers him an immortal
Ponting is mad. The guy was just encouraging him. It was a gesture saying well played but hard luck. He judges people through his own lenses. Bad sportsmanship.
@@indiabharat5014 You may have misunderstood what Ponting was saying here. He acknowledged that he was encouraging him - he was just saying that at that moment in time, even encouragement was hard to take. He was not accusing him of rubbing salt in the wound, he was stating that's how he felt in that moment as result of a number of factors (the encouragement, the bad decision, the emotion of nearly getting 100 on debut). There was no malice or bad sportsmanship in Ponting's statement here.
Some do some don't. Mark Waugh did, Mohammad Azharuddin did in each of his first 3, Doug Walters did in each of his first two. I believe Javed Miandad scored a double ton on debut, certainly a ton anyway. There are other true greats who achieved the feat. Bradman scored 18 and 1 on debut Viv Richards 3 and 4. Both scored tons in their second test as did Zaheer Abbas.
Ponting got saved from a golden duck with a lucky boundary and the same was taken away from his century. You can't write any better Greek cricketing tragedies.
I mean one of the better, sensible, and genious comment i ever read. Same theaory goes into every aspects of our lives.. So i am taking a screen shot of your comment as qoutation.
Grew up secretly admiring and almost idolizing the man despite being a staunch Indian team supporter, couldnt help but have a begrudging respect for not just him, but the entire australian unit of the time.
3:42: I think Ponting is taking it a bit harsh on Ranatunga, it simply seems the senior was showing a nice gesture patting him in good sportsmanship and congratulating him on a solid debut and not really in any sort of "rub salt in the wound" kind of way. May be Ponting thinks everyone else thinks like him and the aussies.
I dont think he means it like that to be harsh on Ranatunga, I think its worded badly. More that Ranatunga came to him to say back luck but "it felt" like he was rubbing salt in the wounds at the time. I can see him feeling that way cause that was a shocker. I could be wrong though.
Daniel Burke Mate you’re right. Cz when I first watched it I felt that Ponting was appreciating Ranathunga’s gesture. After reading the comments only it struck me....
Mate in Australia, patting someone on the head like that is an insult, on the shoulder or back is shown as good work or sympathetic. All it is, is a difference in cultures.
I do believe Ponting knows Ranatunga didnt mean to hurt his feelings. He knows he meant well. But those words must've felt like "rubbing salt in his wound" because what Arjuna said was true. And truth hurts
Even the great Rahul Dravid missed his debut century at lords by 5 runs (95) but records matter lesser than the way you play & behave. Certainly the champion Ponting played with gamesmanship and the greatest Rahul Bhai played with sportsmanship (hence better).
I never watched any of his innings start to finish. Maybe in bits and pieces. However this was the only innings of his I watched entirely! It was very sad that he lost out on a much deserved century. Huge fan from India 🇮🇳
why are people so fixated on 100's , I guess that hunger defines these types of players. The runs he scores were absolutely top class. 44 matches and he played shots all around the ground and looked in complete control. What a player.
I used to hate Australian team become they were very good and used to beat any team anywhere given anytime. But know I realised how classy and strong team Australia was back in late 90s and 2000s. Full of legends
Two of the world's best batsman of that era dravid and ponting had similar fate in their 1st innings but they achieved quite a lot.. ponting had class, aggression and swag.. kohli is much like him..
I have always had a lot of Respect for him. He was not just a good batsam but also a really good fielder. Not to mention a winner. Would hate that he used to beat the Indian team.. great guy
Ponting is one of the best in his time. But Aus umpires were not. I remember watching this match if my memory serves me correct this is Dec1994 If you watch his innings ball by ball, you can see he edge a one to the wicket keeper and given not out He is a great player no doubt about it But the 100 if have got it would have being undeserving one After all he made many 100s against SL and others without the help of the umpires
Ponting be out here vibing but everyone forgets about poor Stuart Law who was at the other end of the crease also on his debut but was never given another test match despite scoring an unbeaten half century.
Pointing was plumb lbw to Vaas which the umpire turned down on the very first delivery he faced. 4 shy of a 100 he receives a poor decision but Ponting is born. That Australian summer of 95 with its poor umpiring, Murali-gate (but Murali was made) and the bad blood between the sides was the watershed series that made Sri Lanka turn a new page in Cricket. What a series!!

Well done, Arjuna Ranatunga. Always had an eye for talent.
he was like blessing the youngster.. Srilankan way I thnk
@me
You know a captain by his attitude.
I don't know why ponting saw this as a negative.. I think it was a nice gesture from ranatunga. I guess only he knows whether he meant it in a bad way
Ranatunga always had an eye for a good meal.aswell

Poor Stuart Law. It was his debut too. He made 54* and never played a Test again, ended up with no Test average.
Stuart Law was a good cricketer
Seems like a poor decision
No test average. That's a wonderful observation 👏

What a kind gesture from Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranathunga.
Thats the way of Sri Lankans. They always respect others and thats the way they do that.
Wearing just a baggy to face a fast-medium bowler like Vaas in Perth. That's some steely balls down under!!
Vishwa Prasad as good as Vaas was he was never more than a medium pacer
He was used to playing on Bellereive. Ball never gets above stump height.
Most underrated batsman of all time. Easily in the same league as Sachin and Lara.
And probably the best puller of the ball the world has ever seen.

Arjuna wasn't rubbing salt in to the wound Ricky. That was a "well played" gesture.
Agree. This shows Pontings mindset. Great batsmen but never up there with sportsmenship skills.
Ponting is mad. The guy was just encouraging him. It was a gesture saying well played but hard luck.

What a cricketer he was really. Tough in your face and flowing with talent and fearless.

So That Is Mustache Pointing

Its a blessing from a opposite veteran successful captain on debut getting out, in future he became most successful captain n player...coincidence
Baby Krishnan Well said!!!
Whoever posessed that Kookaburra bat, they all were giants yaar..
the best batsmen never get debut tons - sachin, lara ponting, dravid, virat.

I saw Ponting score his first hundred, it was an Ashes test and his cover drives were magnificent. He had class written all over him.
