Gorges is a great fort, ironically, the lack of cheap and easy access tours has kept it well preserved. Though a group is trying to get those up and running.
Well, now that I've seen how well fortified Maine is I'll have to scrap my invasion plans and target another part of the coast.
They have forts in Maine going all the way back to the Revolutionary War in Machias Port is a place called Ford O'Brien it was in a used for the Revolution and the War of 1812
Going through Fort Scammel reminded me of playing Myst.
When I was a kid, I used to canoe out to Fort Gorges with my Dad, this video brought back some great memories 👍
Those 2GM/3GM yanmars are easy to rebuild the water pumps. I found these kits cheap on Amazon. I use the same pump for oil changes. Added a short piece of copper tubing to the end seems to work better at getting all the oil out. Always wanted to see the inside of that fort. Great video.
Saw you guys sail right by my (light)house. You missed Fort Levett, and the Fort at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth. The forts were kind of silly really as any incoming invader could just sail northeast of these and come in behind the Casco Bay islands. The only fort that would be able to defend Portland would be Gorges (and fort Sumner when it was still around)
So there you have it, Sam's opinions on the forts of Portland. Definitely necessary info. :D
They should have called it Fortland.

Aloha from Maui! My boyfriend, Ross and I started watching your videos at the beginning of the year. We wanted to see what sailing was like here and came across your channel when you sailed up to Kauai and felt so inspired! We sailed a lot this summer but I didn't think I would end up up sailing to Kauai too because of how dangerous it can be! Somehow we ended up sailing to the Na Pali Coast through the North Shore of Moloka'i and back to Maui crossing South O'ahu, through the Kalohi channel! We plan to do the Alenuihaha soon too, just waiting on an opportunity to do a crossing hopefully as calm as yours. I see why you smile when you talk and love Disney, I do too! Sailing feels magical, like some pixie dust is involved! A lot can go wrong sailing, but all you can do is smile and have faith. Keep sharing your sailing and good luck with your procedure, you're an example of if you can dream it, you can do it!

You've gotten some great suggestions, by now you probably know how indispensable caulk, JBWeld and RTV sealant is to keep handy on board!!! Great fun! Sail forever!!!!

I’m pretty sure your raw water pump problem is because of the leap seal on the back because I had that same problem. Also check and clean the shaft properly. I didn’t and had to replace the seal twice 😉 Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸

If your in Maine touring forts up by bucks harbor theirs a fort from revolutionary war days called fort o'Brian I went to fort o'Brian elementary school just out side the earth works havent been their in 45 years or so but they use to have cannons there still

Year ago had a tour of one of the forts. Those little windows had some pretty big guns. You mentioned the echo.... Well the tour guide lit off a brick of firecrackers. Hehehe ... Then said imagine all those guns going off....

yes, the best Fort in Portland you can't go to . Portland harbor is a great place to sail. alot of places to explore.

If you haven't already hauled out check out the prices at Duck Creek Marina in New Bern. It's about a 4 hour sail from Oriental. $8 a day dry storage.
Is that per foot? In washington NC I was paying 6.5$/ft/month, includes unmetered electricity and water(and use of facilities). Rate is for wet and dry.

Yes DIY with water. Electric is $10 a month.
Highly recommend Deaton’s ...... very experienced family owned with the best electrician and mechanics.
In Oriental, if you need some work done on the boat, check out Sailcraft. I believe its on Whittaker creek. A bit shallow at spots at entrance but they do excellent work. Their chief mechanic, Jim, is amazing. Nice group of folks who know their stuff.

You're up I'm my territory... Maine . I'm at the north end of the Damariscotta river 15 miles from the gulf. In the 80's I sailed 6 summere on the oldest still in continuous use schooner in America, the Stephen Taber twice with my mom after my dad died and on one found my future wife. The Penibscot Bay is so beautiful and you should check it out. I live in an old locally famous ship builders house from the 1800's . Really enjoy watching you both on your voyages. Your woman went for a quick dip and yes it is cold all year. Captain Ken Barnes of the Taber says this is where the term numbskull came from. All the best to you both.

You guys should check out cliff island and the other islands around there I go up there all the time also sand island they have moorings u can tie up there
I live on Cliff Island, lived there my whole life, definitely worth a visit.
Skillet warmed Pizza is the best it gets all crunchy again.
Careful with drone usage in that area...right in the airport flight line and they come in directly over the fort.

Cape Dory 28's are great boats. Aside from shrugging off lobster pots, did you think the full keel was worth the speed compromise on this eastern seacoast tour?

The style of that fort reminded me a lot of Ft. Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas...which I think was also built around that time.

Hey Sam, I have a 3D printer and I design various projects for work and for myself; you’ve mentioned in a couple videos that you wanted to have some things printed (screens for example) and I’ve been wanting to try 3D printing for boat projects. If you want, I could try 3D printing some stuff and send it to you for testing?
@Jacob Fricke What have you printed for your boat? And also, what material did you use? I've really been wanting to try this, but I don't own a boat and I don't know anyone who does. I started watching Sam's channel to see first-hand some common problems that sailors face. I work for the Navy myself, but most of the 3d printing they do is for tools or jigs and not components.
A Confederate States Navy ship actually raided Portland. Here is a piece on it which I found interesting. The Lieutenant who led it was pretty much a 19th century James Bond.

Popham way nicer than Portland. HMU if your passing by Mackeral cove and need a diver. Lots of rope in the water.
Beware of Lobster men in the north east Atlantic, we are territorial. Give way to Canadian lobster fishermen, especially.
Sam when is your surgery scheduled? Also, I'm confused you end saying you were back in North Carolina but I thought you said in a last video you were gong to haul up north and possibly get ready to sail to Europe in Spring? Is your boat back in NC now too? What are the plans inquiring minds need to know lol...!? :)

Deatons has a great reputation but is full at the moment and more expensive.
@@samholmessailing That's a shame. John and his family run a great operation and they have a nice machine shop to some custom work if you want. I did a 5 month refit there and was very pleased . Be sure to swing by the brewery and Friday night food truck if you haven't already .

Have you tried sheet to tiller steering on a beam reach? It usually does a better job than you can do hand steering.
I'm curious how you do this? Do you secure both jib sheets to the tiller or just the working/lazy sheet?

Covered in a previous video- When sitting with feet up in the cockpit, facing aft, he can see forward without having to get up every time.

Sam. I'm not sure but your engine looks just like mine. I replaced the water pump seal on my way south a couple years ago. I made a video so I had some record of what I had done and then decided to post it on youtube. I know it's pathetic but it might help you. By this time, you have already replaced the entire pump but you can replace the (single) seal and have a backup. Here is the link. ruclips.net/video/8Bh9I2E7HGI/видео.html. Also, when I was in Oriental, I got some parts from (I think) Deatons boat yard. It is about 2 miles NE of the main part of town. Good luck. Ron

Motoring meh, but without lights seems dumb/dangerous/illegal. Forts are likely federal property so drones may be illegal there too, besides trespassing, if closed, derilict, dangerous. Ymmv coast guard and skippers license, insurance boat at risk with stuff like that. Pirates are different, less lawyers back then...
