Unreal Engine 5 - High End Interior Archviz Lumen Tips

  • In this tutorial we will take a first look into the new real time global illumination and reflection system that came with UE5 - The Lumen. For interiors (at least for my case) it didn't work just great right out of the box so I have found out few tweaks that helped out a lot. Note that you might need RTX GPU for all the features we are covering.

    Yes, please more insights from you and your perspective and experience on the whole new UE5! Right now in this early times it is hard to get information from the ArchViz side about UE5.

      @@StudioHeisenberg Correct me if im wrong, Ive tried couple of free samples.. even 1 bedroom and a kitchen scene ( like an apartment interior scene ).. the file size goes up to 6gb++.. and some scene ( whole house ) up to 15gb.. is this normal file size for UE4/5 archviz?

      @@NBCNothingButCrap Hey, the sizer are bigger than in other softwares for sure, since you need to keep all assets inside... But check if you have autosaves and assets you didn't use so it is safe do delete and gain space.

      Editor starts to lag when looking at datasmith imported meshes. Same import works fine in 4.26. Any solution? Using rtx 2070S with 24 gb ram.

      @@RedzwanulHuqwould need to take a look into the scene its hard to tell. Start by deleting unnecessary stuff that is imported amd than switching of and one one by one object to and see if some of them is responsible for making problem.

      @@StudioHeisenberg thanks a lot. I migrated the level so it didnt have anything extra in there. But it gives out of memory error during mesh preparation. It works fine in 4.26 though.

    Dude you nailed it .. i really hated terrible blotches and stupid reflections around - your console trick is a life saver ... thanks ...
    But i also cannot stop thinking - OTOY's brigade will literally change the game for archviz not UE 's lumen ..

      Thanks man! My thoughts also, that's why I digged deeper and found all these stuff. Well, I think it's good stuff to have few options for real time remderimg, so if there is competition both sides will push their product further :)

    I see a lot of noise on objects for direct sun and specially big noises in darker area like ocean waves, seems animated clouds.
    Next thing is use hardware option for me is disable. I cannot turn it on

    I am doing most interior renderings - please make a tutorial for the whole workflow - 3ds max/vray to unreal engine 5 - looks like this UE5 is a game changer with that GI : )))

    Great tutorial. What advice would you give for those who cant afford an RTX card? What settings in UE can i use to get as close to realistic as possible? Can you do a tutorial on your workflow from start to finish. I am really interested in ArchViz and would like to create great images.

      Hey, thanks! I will cover Lumen software options soon in separate tutorial (without RTX). Quick hint is, make all walls separate mesh (so no big connected walls) and give attention to mesh distance field...

    My shadows still have noise... i have tried everything... nice demo though.

      Hey, thanks! Try adding more light or samples to lights you already have, also crank up Lumen values in post process! I am using Epidemic Sounds in all of my videos.

    Delete the HDRI dome to get bouncing without rising the intensity values of the light!

      It's indeed not hdri just simple plane in the distance so it should not have big effect on the overall light penetration.

    Instasub! BTW is it better to use rect lights or geo with emissive materials? Or is it about the same?

      Thanks! Geo with emisive material have its limitations, for example if the object is too small it wont contribute to gi at all, so depend on the situation, but whenever you can use actual light I would stick to it.

    I was hoping you’d find a way to improve the lighting within Lumen’s software limitations without relying on hardware raytracing. Once you turned on hardware raytracing, your solution became moot for many users without RTX.

      Hi, make sure you have RTX capable card and also turn on Raytracing in project settings! Hope this helps.

    i mean increasing indirect light is ok but if the sun is a sunset whole room will change color
    its better to use skylight

      Unfortunately, it is one of the things that still won't work with Lumen, they wrote it, probably in later versions it will...

      @@StudioHeisenberg unfortunate.. either way unreal was bad with transplant materials 😅... I hope they improve it in beta 6 or something.
      Btw we can get it working with ray tracing right ?

      Yes, it was always drawback, but raytraced came close to usable at least :) I still haven't managed to get them work, but there must be a hybrid way, it could be a topic for another video once I find a workflow.

    Mate , thanks a lot for this video.
    I only have one comment/question, your scene is far to be a real project scenario.
    You have 30 fps with one chair, a reception desk and a wall.
    Have you tried to use a project, either residential or commercial, with hundreds of objects and furniture?
    How is the fps?

      Hi Steven, this was first day test so I didn't went so complex. I am currently working on large scale project I cannot say much about, but will have insight into more heavier scenes. Note that in scene above none of the object is Nanite, so I think we will be able to make big scenes with Nanite that would work in good fps. Cheers

      @@StudioHeisenberg it is set to movable. basically all the tricks you doing, playing with the shadows while changing the position of the source of the light only happens with my sunsky light not the directional one

    Hi, I have a doubt. When I import a scene it looks black, before I activated gpu lightmass with RTX and rendered, now with lumen as I render?

      Hi, try deleting bakes if you have some, make sure lumen is prefered gi solution (it should be by default) and than play with indirect lighting intensity and that should be it. Let me know if it works?

      @@StudioHeisenberg it has none, I made the FBX, and when importing it appears all black there is nothing calculated. Don't you have to render anything before or just import the fbx and that's it? ibb.co/89gLT1M

      @@sebastianbarra4505 I would delete everything except meshes and cameras, and than add a light just to be sure that problem is not in imported stuff. Good luck

      Are you increasing it on direct light (sun) or skylight? Skylight indirect does not do anything

      @@WARES-ht9ww The easiest way to fix that maybe is to move everything to fresh scene with raytracing and everything turned on and go from there.

    Anybody know why my UE5 become slow and laggy rite after taking a screenshot ( set to 4 ). Anyone experienced this issue and mind sharing how to fix it?

      If you're talking about high quality screenshot with 4x resolution, it takes high on your GPU vram, and you might get unstable going more 2-3x depending which gpu you have

      @@StudioHeisenberg I use my laptop, 2080 gpu and 32gb ram. The whole thing are perfectly fine at 1st, butter smooth. But rite after the screenshot.. just 1 snap.. then it happen. Thanks for the reply mate.

      Hey, I am using Cinema 4D as my main software and import C4D file trough Datasmith, but don't use Evermotion much as it is mostly for 3ds Max. But I plan to cover my workflow in separate tutorial. Cheers

      @@contrast3dvisual current limitations of nanite in UE5 is that foliage is not supported, but in next versions for sure you will be able to use everything.

      Have you check whole scene maybe some of the lights are still static or stationary, note that Lumen works with movable lights?

      It's hard to tel without viewing what an actual problem is, try to go trough all the steps from the video and see if it help.

    The color dynamic range under Unreal is really rubbish. I guess, it's sRGB, and I don't see a way to change that at the moment. It is really painful moment when you need to setup the external and internal lighting at the same time in the frame, because if you increase lighting for interior, you'll probably completely blow away the exterior.

      You can set separate postprocess volume at the exterior which could help you in this case...

    I have a GTX 1080 but it wont let me click the "use hardware ray tracing" option. Do I have to enable ray tracing first in the project to be able to check that box?

      Yes, you will need RTX for this option, not sure if without real RTX card it is possible but you can try.

      You can speed up yt video by clicking on lower right settings. Currently the like disslike is 617:14 so I guess for most people pace is ok...
