So...first of all...that little Jeannie! What an imagination! Watching an imaginary Peppa Pig from her little tree stump! Secondly, the fall colors are amazing! Thirdly....I LOVE LOVE LOVE your property! So cozy and so many projects and wonderful animals! Quite the happy little homestead! Lastly...we have a few questions...#1: Can compost get so hot that it could catch on fire? (don't laugh...I have no knowledge of composting!) #2 Dean wants to know why you don't cut wood and sell it!? A little side project after all the animals are gone for the year! Looking forward to Wednesday's Video!
Dom here. 1) yes composts can get hot enough to catch fire under the right circumstances from what I know. Usually only with large scale type of composting, think like municipal composting. 2) Most of the wood I cut is softwood, not sure what kind of market there is for that here. In my dream world where I win a minor lottery, I'd like to put in a wood stove before next winter. So I could burn some myself and that stuff will be good and seasoned by then

I watched your initial yard tour video, and then I watched your yard tour video one year later. You got a lot done. Both of you working and two little helpers, you got a lot done. I really enjoy your videos 😊
Ok, I agree with Dominic. Not enough has changed! BUT, I also agree with Jenny. You needed to do a fall tour video. I am going to say as kindly as I know how, that the biggest change this year has been within yourselves and your family. The children have grown, learned and matured. Your confidence and skills have developed and improved and I think you're planning more, not that I expect your impulsivity to ever go completely, which is just fine. Really good work this year you guys! As for the garden, we had a so-so year too. It was a learning experience also. I was young and single when I started gardening and I am still learning and having so-so years almost 40 years later. Thanks as always for sharing! Beautiful fall colours right there! All those folks racing by on the trail could see the colours fine from your video.

Great video, great progress, especially with having little helpers in the mix! Have you thought of getting ducks for meat? Some ppl don't like the taste, but it's my favourite meat next to lamb.

Dominic will you be leaving tree stumps as they are out will you be grinding them? I agree with Jenny about changes. You may not think of them as significant, but each small change moves you guys close to your goals. Great video!
Dominic here. I left the small stumps as they are (~3 feet tall) on purpose. Next spring when it is nice and wet I should be able to pry those out by hand. The big stumps I will cut down as far as I can with the chainsaw and let them rot in place. I don't have a grinder and given that this will likely never be mowed for hay, I don't need to grind stumps really. Would be nice if I did have a grinder though!
It was OK while we were home. The first winter, it was fine because Dominic was always home to tend to it and pull the snow off (we had the chickens living in it and it was great). The second winter, we did not have chickens and left for a week, and we obviously had 200cm of snow in that one week. It did not survive.
